Are you an overly positive person ACE?

    I've anxious days

Nope, regularly worry about things. Always stressed when it comes to college. Was anxious about COVID at the beginning, but my father’s a healthcare worker and generally positive about things. There’s a lot of healthcare workers who believe COVID was here long before March.

Bit of a balls not having the early case numbers :D

Well, we know now that the figures are available around lunchtime each day, so why do they wait until 5, 6 or even 7 sometimes to release them?

I never said anything about where they're coming from or who they are. It's a fact that Dublin's hospitals are seeing bigger increases per capita and in actual numbers compared to the rest of the country.

Dublin hospitals have more capacity so naturally the numbers in them will be up
Are you counting Leinster population to calculate per capita so ?

Our best estimate of infection-fatality ratio at present is that it ranges from around 0.1% in those aged 20-30 to 7-8% in those aged 85 and older. If we fail to protect the elderly, we may expect 4-6% mortality in those cases aged 65 years

It implies that they don't matter.

    They do.

And people of all ages end up in there.

It only implies what you want it to imply . The majority who end up in ICU due to Covid are mainly elderly or those with an underlying condition or both. Emotive language doesn't change that.

Terribly bad odds for the elderly :(

I'm calling it nonsense because it is nonsense. You're making the claim that masks are unsafe, where's your evidence?

You're basically saying the health experts are trying to infect us with Covid by wearing masks.

Get outta town with that nonsense!

Masks are unsafe if not used correctly, nobody has ever disputed that. Not sure why you are.

Yea I know the conspiracy forum is do you need directions...

You can't really use percentages increases when numbers are so low, especially comparing 8 with 23.
Of course you can, we are dealing with a curve.

85 is a year over the life expectancy of a female and 5 years for a male. I would think anything beyond ALE is a bonus to be honest and Covid has just become another illness that is lethal to the elderly.

Yes a few GPs have thought it was here too even as early as last December

My grandmother was in Bons ICU for 3 weeks in november, tested negative for flu, luckily survived the ventilator. Father believes it was COVID.

This closing the border is ridiculous talk.
I'm all for no schools, no pubs to get us back on track but we don't need border control. We need to come to an agreement with NI about doing the same things. I'm sure they are willing to participate in an all island approach to curbing the spread of the virus.

7% death rate for covid those over 85 isn't that surprising given that the death rate in a given year would be perhaps 15% in that group regardless of covid

Anyone know the flu IFR for same age?

647 positive swabs over the weekend.

Depending on backlog that could mean anything from 240 -300 cases announced today

647 positive swabs last 48 hours from 22,392 tests
Going by swabs we’re looking at circa 230 today

I didnt keep track of actual tests over the weekend but they are approx 23,000 (+/- a couple of hundred) so positivity rare is approximately 2.8%

Young people revolting with raves shouldn't come at great surprise.

If you think young people will sit on there hands like they did with the first lockdown you are stupid, thankfully, most people in the country will listen, do there bit and try suppress this spread, however, the younger generation are completely fed up.

Someone in this thread told "mental health is an excuse," but it isn't. Young people need to interact with one another for the sake of there mental health. The government have not done enough to support them during this period, if you close places (like pubs + restaurants) were they normally interact, don't be surprised to find them elsewhere.

Without proper laws, fines and support. This will continue to be an issue.

Looks like yesterday's numbers were an outlier compared to today and the previous days.

Perhaps for now, but remember when 85 cases was an outlier!

    30% of what die?

People. It’s going to be carnage, mass graves the works, I am surfing a wave of fear and anxiety atm.Glad I filled my presses with essentials now. Seriously thinking of one last trip to Spar before the grim reaper does his rounds. I suppose we have to look on the bright side though...there is lots of cold storage in the meat factories that could be comendeered to store the bodies.

You'd expect about 7-8% of over 80 year olds to die in any given year anyways. Once you're over 80 you're living on bonus time. If Covid doesn't get you something else will. So you'd have to question the value of destroying economies to prolong the lives of some people by a few months.

In the UK, a study by Oxford University showed that 1/3rd of those whose deaths is assigned to covid 19 actually died of something else but also had covid 19 as a co-morbidity. The numbers could be similar in Ireland.
