A spokesperson for the LVA, which represents Dublin publicans, said the proposal would put Dublin city and county at Level 3 of the plan; bars serving food, restaurants and cafes at Level 4; with wet pubs at a level stricter than Level 5.

He also questioned "why is NPHET focusing on the hospitality sector, when the latest data from the Health Protection Surveillance Centre shows such a low number of cases linked to bars serving food."

Why is the hospitality sector being singled out by NPHET? Restaurants and cafés and pubs that serve food in Dublin are being punished for something that is not their fault. Isn't that collective punishment?

Was there not meant to be powers for the Guards to shut down non compliant pubs? Or is that coming when the pint pubs reopen?
Maybe if they enforce it, compliance will increase. Can't imagine many pubs would like to be shut down on the spot.

Asked to comply, then if not shut for 48hours ,then it all goes round again . Guards are fed up . Have been asked to comply and they still don't, then they should be shut for 1 month or 2 at least .
It's this governments half in half out handling that has these fxxxers thumbing their noses at the guards .
I know 2 pubs personally where this has happened .
One started to comply after being shut twice and the other is on its fourth " chance " .
They don't care because they reckon if their regulars know that they can drink and stay as long as they want they will still come safe ir not .
It is very disingenuous of people here to say it is coming from house parties alone when this is going on .

Most of the mingling in homes isnt the parties that get the headlines its cousins, friends etc. If there's a clear message to stop that the curtain twitching of neighbors is enough to stop the majority of it. Societal norms of behavior cause most people to behave accordingly most of the time.

Oh I know, Communion and Confirmation parties are ongoing also.
And when I say party, I don't mean strangers in the house, I know it can be extended family also as shown in the reports.

Nice to see Sweden had a nice flat curve and is heading downwards now.
Anything we can learn from that?

That if you do nothing to suppress the curve in the first wave, it takes a long time for cases to go down.

Now the interesting part will be whether they'll have a second wave or not, but looks like we'll have to wait.

I remember on day 1 (12th March?) when Leo closed the schools and announced that we should all be careful, maintain our distance form others, wash our hands and work from home where possible, we all bought into everything.

That's pretty much the level that Sweden has maintained throughout the pandemic.

Unfortunately there were so many curtain twitchers in Ireland so we shared photos of crowded pubs and got them closed. (fair enough but the government should have closed them first- not under social media peer pressure).

Then we shared photos of lots of people at tourist spots and outdoors in parks so we got government to introduce 2km then 5km travel restrictions which we can all realise now were pointless. (this seems ludicrous now when it is clear that transmission doesn't happen outdoors and more sunlight helps fight infection)

So soon enough because of public outrage everything was shut down bar the essentials and we could barely go outside (counterproductive) .

I still believe that if we had just stayed at the original level of advice given on 12th March to be careful, wash hands, work from home where possible and not gather in large groups then we would be in a much better position overall now- just like Sweden.

As it stands we are going backwards because of previous restrictions and fatigue of the whole situation.

Because community transmission is so high. Need to break chains of transmission so people massively reduce contacts and reduce being indoor public settings. Its very unfortunate for them but cant see many continuing to go to them in Dublin even if still open with the level of cases being so high. Need short and severe measures to try to reduce case level.

That lad has been all over the airwaves last day or two. He doesn't seem to understand how serious this is but then again he's a vested interest.

Turns out NPHET got food poisoning from an establishment and have it in for them since.

They didn't 'do nothing' they advised the population to be careful and distance. They also apologised to the public for allowing the virus to get into nursing homes which their inflated death rates.

We also allowed and even forced the virus into our own nursing homes but I have yet to hear any apologies.

We just prefer to blame ourselves as 'stupid paddies'..

That's fair enough but the data says transmission is coming from private houses, how is this stopping private houses from getting together. If anything its making the situation worse.

No social distancing in that place obviously.
Or maybe they all travelled on the same bus with no air cons etc? Need more details...

People who make the argument that all that's going to happen by closing pubs is people having parties and flouting restrictions - can people not take personal responsibility and not do these things? You don't have to have that party, you don't have to have all those people back at your house - fundamentally you can't blame the government all of the time if the issue is about personal responsibility.

But opening pubs wouldn't make any difference to people who are having a family group at their home .
They still would not go to the pub as numbers limited so these people will still have that get together at home .

I think it was a mistake to drive those indoors . It should have been left at 15 outside in garden and there might have been compliance .

As part of measures only 1 household allowed visit other household. Level 3 will send strong signal to people they need to reduce contacts in general. Transmission in households not surprising when community transmission so high and when people spend a lot of their time with others in household.

So ill ask you the question if these people are going break the rules anyway would you prefer them to drink in pubs and be regulated or to drink at home and not.

How can they break the rules and be regulated. They're either regulated or they're breaking the rules. I don't buy the argument that these people stick rigidly to the rules in pubs, but then become rule breakers outside of pubs.

Why have communions and confirmations been allowed go ahead in recent weeks? I've lost count of the amount of 'small family gatherings' that took place to celebrate the big day. Surely these things are not that important that they can't wait until next year.
