In this case though it's more a reflection on O Neill. Hes a petty individual and far too precious.

It's probably the only occasion where Delaney isn't primarily to blame.

    Quote
An FAI source empathized with O’Neill. “He hadn’t done this at Celtic or Leicester, so he just thought, ‘Why do I have to do this now?’” the source says.

He was handed the script the day before filming commenced.

    That's the FAI's fault.

And we all know who was in charge of the FAI.

(Paraphrasing) "At a crucial moment, Delaney couldn't be contacted because he was at the Galway races".

Shows he didn't even take his job too seriously. He wasn't available if it got in the way of his fun.

    https://www.killarneyadvertiser.ie/kerry-soccer-chief-rejects-claims-that-league-breached-covid-restrictions/

'O’Regan denies claims that he charged an admission fee of €5 at the Premier A League Final between Killarney Athletic and Killarney Celtic, a match that was supposed to be played behind closed doors in line with COVID-19 restrictions.

He also rejects suggestions that upwards of 180 people were at the league decider, stating that the initial accusations were made by someone with a “personal vendetta” which stems from O’Regan’s friendship with disgraced former FAI CEO John Delaney.'

I think if it was in his contract and/or he was getting paid, it would be very precious.

But for a man in his 60s, who wasn't told about the ad in advance (and not clearing it with him seems like yet another screw up) and wasn't obliged to do it, or getting paid, he's entitled to say "I'm beyond this nonsense, it's not for me".

He was being paid plenty as it was and for very little. Never took training or practiced tactics or team shape before a game. He was there for the loot just like Delaney. He had no problem courting Stoke City and he would have dropped us in a second if they said yes.

If age was a problem what was he doing near the team. Btw Keane is a hungry ****er too and would mouth every story to Off the Ball and Sky for a few quid.

Didn't spot that it was the day before but I can't see why the script itself would be a problem as it was only a skit. Given what Martin himself was getting out of the FAI(big bucks when no English league club wanted him) he could have put himself out a bit.

Oh you won't find me disagreeing about Keane.

In fact one obvious corollary to the entire s**tshow is that, when he was a non paid player, Keane bailed on a World Cup over protests about the FAI's incompetence, but when they were paying him money he was happy to work away with them. And we'd know for all image, you'd get him to wear a leprechaun suit and run around with Gary Linekar if a cheque was involved.

And I have criticised O'Neill plenty of times. But I kinda get someone saying that was not part of the (admittedly very well paid) job description.

I'm not having a go at you. I just think O Neill could have put himself out.

I think the three of them Delaney, O Neill and Keane were milking it.

Although Trappatoni and Brady got well paid I didn't get the same feeling from them but then again it's a pro game and money is God to a lot in the game.

Btw are you sure Keane wasn't being paid in Saipan?

Asking the manager to do an ad is perfectly fine and the manager should do it.

Asking the manager to play a part in ad that makes him intentionally look like a prick is not perfectly fine and the manager shouldn't do it.

He's not an actor or a comedian looking for work. He's a football manager.

Whether it's fine to ask or not fine, a competent organisation would have had all this sorted out, go or no go, by the first draft of the script stage. It's mind-boggling that they let it get to the stage where the sponsor had not only committed large sums of cash filming it but booked the ad slots too, before forcing them to pull out. Then p*ssing on whatever possibility was left of a future commercial arrangement by trying to hold on to their cash!

    I'm partial to your abracadabra,

I'm raptured by the joy of it all.

Should have just aired one of his interviews, would have had the same desired effect.

Yes Martin had a bit of the Jim Sheridan about him in interviews particularly with Tony O Donoghue

He'd then show up later on BBC etc and do the laughey jokey smart alec routine

If you had told me 18 months ago that tomorrow evening I'd be heading home, putting my feet up and getting stuck into a tell-all book about the fall of John Delaney and the FAI I would have said you were insane.

But here we are. Looking forward to picking it up in Easons tomorrow.

Tighe deserves proper recognition for his services to actual journalism.

Irish soccer fans are very lucky to have him and should acknowledge his efforts and integrity.

There were easier euros to make.

He’d be an unquestionable hero if this book led to, or encouraged, criminal proceedings.

    He’s a dying breed unfortunately.

Picked up a copy of Champagne Football this afternoon.

“Flying out the door” according to the lad in Easons.

Bought the digital edition so I was able to download it last night at midnight.

My Kindle tells me I'm about 25% of the way into the book and I have to say I'm hate-reading it so far. It's utterly engrossing but I'm spending my time silently fuming at what went on, and I'm only up to the point where they're making a mess of the 10-year season tickets.

Their entire plan was beyond ludicrous:

    vN6664h.png

And to make matters worse, they were offered the full €90 million they needed to cover their share of the stadium development by a ticketing/hospitality company called ISG. Instead the FAI thought they could make more than the €90 million by doing it in-house.

Hopefully will have it finished by the weekend. So far I highly recommend it.

Dropped up to our local shopping centre at lunchtime and saw a car with "FAI - Supporting Irish Soccer" decals on the doors and back window. Never saw it before.

There is a book shop in the centre ;)

(btw it was a base model generic crossover, nothing too fancy)

A few years ago they would have been invoiced and paid for the top of the range model with all the add ons, yet still got the model you saw.
The difference in the price going to you know who.

You couldn't make the "Vantage Club" clusterfcuk up. You really couldn't.

IRFU asked for not-cheap by any means, but achievable sums - and we're a Tier 1 nation globally in rugby.

We're what - tier 3 at best in football, and not exactly stylish, but FAI thought they'd ask for up to twice as much?? Wtf like???

The Second Captains pieces on when Ken Early was at the VC launch, watching the wheels fall off in slow motion, are grimly hilarious.

Frank Zappa had a song, Cocaine Decisions, about what happens when you start believing your own bullsh|t...

Every piece of it Delaney's doing.

Said it at the time that he'd have been sacked for it in any real job.

No shortage of idiots on here defending him then.

its kinda ironic the Delaney Father and son's downfall came when they paid money to the FAI... to cover up what they were doing https://www.irishtimes.com/sport/casey-considers-position-after-delaney-says-he-paid-100-000-1.31760

    Finished it last night.

A great read, and totally exposes what an utter embarrassment the FAI have been down through the years. They would have been exposed a lot sooner if it wasn't for Ireland's archaic libel laws, where Delaney constantly abused the legal system to shut down dissenters and force people out of the organisation.

Shane Ross pops up a good bit in the book too, a clown of a man who was happy to let the FAI do what they want up until the writing was on the wall.

a name I'd never heard before was former FAI board member John Byrne described in the book as a staunch Fianna Failer and the go-between Delaney and Bertie and the government, pushing for Delaney and making excuses and smoothing things over with the government at every turn.

It was an interesting read. Not too much that I didnt know already but nice to have it all documented into one book

It just seemed like everything was hinging on those Vantage Club tickets but Delaney still acted like he had the money in the bank.

The accountants need to be struck off after all of the Garda investigations are done. There is no way that they didn't see what was going on through the audit.

So much money is unaccounted for or went to absolute non entities. The money to Con Martin. The money to Delaneys ex girlfriend that she is saying was way over what she actually recieved.

The booked never touched upon what Emma English role was up to. There was a payment to her over organising Delaneys birthday birthday party. She accompanied him on every trip. How much did she receive with expenses?

I actually seen the 2 of them in Istanbul Airport around the time that the 2 were globetrotting in trying to get Delaney his ExCo gig. Delaney had a personal assistant (2 I think). Was English/himself paying for her flights around Europe.

The book will definitely have a second edition with the added on pieces for the Garda investigation. One thing is for sure, he is definitely getting hit with a massive tax bill for all of those Benefits-in-Kind.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 14,096 ✭✭✭✭Zebra3

FAI got hit with a BIK bill because of Delaney.

    €2.7M I think.

Reading the the book at the minute but the undermining of Brian Kerr really pissed me off. Delaney phoning the kitman and asking what was his relationship with the players was like while we were in the middle of the wc campaign. Then vetoing a job with a UEFA technical analysis group after letting Kerr go
