This back log reporting needs to be explained by NPHET! It’s only happening on two days. A Saturday and a Tuesday.
I agree with the doctors calling for the numbers to be announced 1 a week!
There will be even bigger meltdowns at the end of every week when 1,000+ new cases are reported. The media need to come to consensus to disclose either the 5 day/7 day/14 day number along with the daily number

You're welcome, take it easy heading back running inflammation of the heart can occur from a viral infection. As a runner I'm sure you knew that already.

I'm building myself up slowly and not taking any chances at present. Cheers

Wouldn't people start to become complacent if the numbers are announced only once per week?

People are like sheep if a growing number become complacent many many more will follow

I think he means here with your normal cold etc not covid. So headline might be a little misleading.

I myself have gone into work while symptomatic' - Dr Ronan Glynn appeals to medical staff following rise in Covid-19 among health workers

    https://m.independent.ie/irish-news/i-myself-have-gone-into-work-while-symptomatic-dr-ronan-glynn-appeals-to-medical-staff-following-rise-in-covid-19-among-health-workers-39505693.html

There's not a doctor in the country who won't send you for a Covid test with common cold symptoms, I don't think it's misleading, health care workers were the main source of transmission to the vunrable and we're still seeing consistent cases coming from them.
It's worrying he even has to tell them to cop on.

I think it would be more beneficial if they would inform us of the situation of the hospitals in relation to covid and not just the number of new cases, I thought the ability of the hospitals to cope is more important than the number of cases.

Sorry but I can only laugh at comments suggesting another lockdown.

    How is it laughable tho?
We can all agree that cases are on an upward trend. The data says it. What if we get 1000 cases a day? What about 2000 or 3000?
Given a chance the virus will spread.

Your comment is really stupid to be honest. Like ah sure you know best. Care to give me next week's lotto numbers mate?

No i mean when he says he's gone into work symptomatic before I think he's talking about years gone by when he might have had a cold for example. Not that he's gone into work now while symptomatic

But that hes saying not to do it now, which is pretty basic stuff

Unfortunately some hospitals in Ireland place the burden of finding cover for a sick Doctor on the Doctor themselves, no surprise if some of them go to work when ill.

There's a cultural problem that is reinforced by hospital management over the years.

Lockdown is a disastrous approach and as we can see from it’s already vivid failure- a complete waste of time and resources. I can’t empathise with the kind of reactionary simple thinking that wants to hit the “lockdown” button at every opportunity

This government cant be seen to do a Sweden.

Irish people are generally hysterical at the best of times. If the deaths start rising SF,PBP etc and the low paid marxist journalists will be hysterical.

Plus our health system is pretty poor by international standards.

    Another lockdown is certain.

Yea I assumed he wasn't referring to himself but it's seem to be a current problem going by his words..

Explaining the reason for his warning he said: “We have seen an increase in cases of health care workers over the past week in particular, including across our acute hospital system.

Yup noticed healthcare worker number seemed to have been increasing again but thought that might have been expected given the increased cases. Clearly beyond the level they expected

The backlog (or what ever the issue is) occurs every day, it's just that the Saturday and Tuesday figures are the most pronounced.
    This week:
    Mon: Swabs: 209 - Cases: 53
    Tue: Swabs: 90 - Cases: 217
    Wed: Swabs: 105 - Cases: 89
    Thur: Swabs: 137 - Cases: 95
    Fri: Swabs: 155 - Cases: 98
    Sat: Swabs: 154 - Cases: 230

The Monday swabs are over 2 days, so looking at the daily swab figures is not a crazy up and down like a yo-yo. It's a gradual increase over the week, followed by a small drop (obviously from GP referrals only been referred Mon-Fri for the most part)
All this talk about wanting weekly figures rather than daily, they should just release the number of positive cases they have been notified of over the past 24hrs, like what they use to do!

As someone who spent 3 weeks on his back with Covid

Wow sounds bad! So did you manage ok with the commode when you were on your back for 3 weeks?

Good thread here on testing and some of the issues being faced in the labs.

Could be feeding into the issues with delayed reporting

What is with the lockdown obsession in this country? Do people love it? Or maybe the misery of it? Constantly mentioned again and again.

By all accounts, every other country in Europe is making an effort to live with the virus.

We’re the only ones with pubs closed, talking of lockdowns and 9 month plans

Simply because we haven't the health system to cope. The rest of Europe does.

Nor the maturity to behave in pubs. Look at the hysterical reaction to the idea of recording stuff in pubs produced.

Also SF moaning about a law they passed. :D

In fairness a 9 month plan is a good idea. At the beginning too much was based on this being a short term problem with a hope for normality by August. That would only have been the case if Europe had been going for an elimination strategy.

I think they are deliberately avoiding getting into this in any way by talking about how stable the numbers are and referencing the 7 and 14 day numbers. The range of variation in the daily numbers also makes them useless as a measure of anything much.

We seem to have extremely low covid deaths compared to other countries.

I wonder if someone who had covid months ago has a heart attack now because of the known side affects of covid, would case of death just be a heart attack.

Similar to deaths in hospitals, I wonder would the family ask the doctor to put something other than covid on the death certificate in case it affected things like life insurance.

We are generally close to the bottom of the table for ICU and general hospital beds in Europe. Sweden and the UK also very bad on that metric.

Compared to Albania we might be OK.

But by all measures our healthcare is very poor.

    https://www.google.com/amp/s/amp.independent.ie/irish-news/health/waiting-lists-here-are-the-worst-in-all-of-europe-37855087.html

Ireland has the worst hospital waiting lists in Europe, according to a damning new index.

Overall, the healthcare system here ranks 22nd out of 35 countries.
