By now you don't even need to read that to realise the headline from the Atlantic is fake news when it comes to Mr. Trump, the purpose of the article is click bait. Since his election the New York Times, Washington Post and The Atlantic have been running a daily 2 minutes of hate campaign.

The US military is the largest in the world bar none in terms of spending and access to weaponry. No other country even comes close. Whether we like it or not (I don't) Pax Americana keeps a lot of countries in check who leaders would take their population into war. Since the collapse of the cold war the United States and it's allies have been involved in several major conflicts usually tied to oil access.

Do you think Ireland would have such low expenditure on military if the country were not part of the Anglo-sphere? Would Americans in general be better off if their country was not the worlds policeman as Washington tends to see themselves? The answer is very likely yes, running an empire is a money losing venture as the Russians (Soviet Union), the British, the Spanish, the Ottomans, the Romans and many others that have collapsed discovered.

When you speak of the military, you are talking about the Pentagon and the people who directly benefit from the military industrial complex, dare you cut their budget and they will tear you apart, so as a US president you have to watch your step and keep your friends close but your enemies closer.

There is also the case General Mike Flynn, who resigned from the Obama camp and joined the Trump administration, he was taken out quite quickly by establishment and is still having to fight them. How General Flynn was treated will not have been lost on the Pentagon generals, so public support for Trump will not be easy to come by in a company town like Washington DC.

Lets look for a moment at the political opposition, the only anti-war presidential candidate to come out on the DNC side was Tulsi Gabbard and VOX (bias left-wing) called her a loser for her stance. Most of the news outlets ignored her demolishing of the official propaganda about American wars. Even CNN and the New York Times smeared her as a "Russian asset" and an "apologist for Assad", referencing a visit she made to Syria in 2017 when she held talks with the President of that country.

Loser: Tulsi Gabbard

The congresswoman from Hawaii has premised her entire candidacy on fierce opposition to US military adventurism abroad. Tonight, she had a chance to distinguish herself during a lengthy foreign policy debate — and made a series of blatantly false statements.

First, she described the Turkish invasion of northeastern Syria, which is controlled by America’s Kurdish allies, thusly: “the slaughter of the Kurds being done by Turkey is yet another negative consequence of the regime change war we’ve been waging in Syria.”

Trump himself has said in his campaign, and has not delivered yet! that the US should be pulling out of the Syria and Iraq, and the Democrats attached him for that. See U.S. Republicans join Democrats to blast Trump's Syria withdrawal.

It is highly likely that the military industrial complex in the United States controls the mainstream media on both sides of the political divide with regard to its activities. I find it highly unlikely that there not be mainstream dissenting opinions against American militarism, but it does not seem to matter which political party is in charge their policy has not changed in at least two decades. And in that regard I don't see the threat from the US military leadership until some time in the future after Trump when their budgets are threatened by domestic an economic instability within the continental United States. Inevitably that financial crisis must come, their spending has been going exponential for over a decade now. Normally the Republicans tend to make the most noise about budget deficits, like the presidents before him Trump does not care and the debt grows.
