Hope the mods don't mind a new thread, but I just want to see how many of us think Trump will beat Biden in Nov?
I think he just has so much of a populist ground swell and I wouldn't be surprised if 'external' participants get involved in the process.

Not really. You have to understand all the caucuses and councils that make up the DNC, they do not necessarily see eye to eye. In this years selection there are 3 major factions broadly led by Clinton/Bloomberg, Obama/Biden and Sanders/Cortez. Bloombergs run was Clintons last stand and essentially represents the boomer wing of the party that are dying off. The radical socialists do not have national appeal, and certain loss, Obama made some phone calls, the candidates dropped out and they agreed that Biden was the most moderate candidate to unite the party while keeping the radicals in check. Had the radicals dominated party funding would have collapsed, there are lots of billionaires funding this party who have their own agendas. How do you reckon Obama did so well financially since leaving the white house? One interesting feature of Obama speeches is how often he mentions himself, Trump is not alone among politicians who show narcissistic behaviour and if you want to look for scandals during the Obama administration there were quite a few, by comparison Trump has been a choir boy so far.

There is so much antagonism at the moment against Trump who has usurped both the Democrat and Republican establishment that it will not be possible to evaluate his presidency until long after he has left the office. The problem is then Americans and by extension countries in the Anglo-American sphere of influence have is who will run for office after Trump? Anybody you might regard as competent will just look at it and say the swamp in not worth the hassle, and you may well get person with military background step in to "unify" the country.

Practically none of them. The news corporation applies a bias, the editorial team applies a bias and the the individual journalist apply their bias. In most instances the goal is to get as many clicks as possible to drive advertising revenue and the easiest way to do that is to get people outraged since they get angry they are more likely to pass on the article and drive yet more clicks.

In this case, the Atlantic has a well known anti-Trump bias so after several years you know the form and it is best to let the story settle and see what the real story (if any) is. You can see what happened with the George Floyd incident, we got a glimpse through a keyhole and an outrage mob formed, but when better information came out later it is not such a black and white case if you will pardon the pun.

I was listening to an interview (on Newstalk?) where they were talking about the very remote possibility of America becoming a dictatorship under Trump and the person being interviewed said it was an impossibility. To stage a coup you need the military on your side and nobody in the military supports Trump.

All media has some bias or other. However these things are on a spectrum. At the extremes you have outlets that are little more than state propaganda used to amplify whatever message rulers want and to attack their enemies, e.g. Xinhua in China, Tass in Russia and ONN in America.

At the next level you have media that has more critical analysis but still has blatant biases. A lot of the British newspapers fall into this category e.g. The Guardian and Mirror on one side and The Telegraph, Daily Mail, Sun, Times and Express on the other. CNN, Fox and MSNBC could go into this category as well in the US TV sphere.

Finally though you have outlets that aren't as obvious in their leanings. A good rule of thumb is if people on the left claim that they have a right-wing bias and vice-versa. I would put the BBC and Sky News in this category and the likes of ABC/NBC in the states.

The US military is the largest in the world bar none in terms of spending and access to weaponry. No other country even comes close. Lets look for a moment at the political opposition, the only anti-war presidential candidate to come out on the DNC side was Tulsi Gabbard and VOX (bias left-wing) called her a loser for her stance. Most of the news outlets ignored her demolishing of the official propaganda about American wars. Even CNN and the New York Times smeared her as a "Russian asset" and an "apologist for Assad", referencing a visit she made to Syria in 2017 when she held talks with the President of that country.

Trump himself has said in his campaign, and has not delivered yet! that the US should be pulling out of the Syria and Iraq, and the Democrats attached him for that. See U.S. Republicans join Democrats to blast Trump's Syria withdrawal.

It is highly likely that the military industrial complex in the United States controls the mainstream media on both sides of the political divide with regard to its activities. I find it highly unlikely that there not be mainstream dissenting opinions against American militarism, but it does not seem to matter which political party is in charge their policy has not changed in at least two decades. And in that regard I don't see the threat from the US military leadership until some time in the future after Trump when their budgets are threatened by domestic an economic instability within the continental United States. Inevitably that financial crisis must come, their spending has been going exponential for over a decade now. Normally the Republicans tend to make the most noise about budget deficits, like the presidents before him Trump does not care and the debt grows.
