Can I get a private test if I want to (clearly only if I have symptoms - I wouldn't do it for the craic) or is the only choice being referred through your doctor and then through the public system?

    If you're in Dublin, €180:

Them clowns in Skerries need to be charged. Two women were arrested in Australia for knowing they were positive and going out and about. Made an example of, we will do nothing - watch

I wouldn't pay €180 for a turnaround time of 48 hours. If you got seen to nearly immediately and then had a wait time for a result of 12-24 hours, yes, but at 48 hours you may as well go through the public system. At worst you'd be waiting a further day, and at best you'd get your results in 24 hours. Liffey Medical would want to up their game if they wanted people to pay for that.

Teenage girls, most likely being silly, on Tiktok is not actual evidence of wrongdoing although they are unlikely to be allowed to forget it for quite some time.

Charged for what? And based on what?

Had a test done 30 minutes ago. Expecting the result tonight or worst case with paperwork tomorrow lunchtime, (privately done by company outside Ireland). So paying €180 for a 24-48 turnaround is a rip off.

Why do we even have to go through a GP though? In the UK you just rock up to a drive through test centre any time you want. Result within 24 hours. Could go every week if you had a mind to.
Mainly to put some level of controls on it. We don't have unlimited tests at the moment, and there are hypochondriacs who'd be booking themselves in for a test 3 times week, eating up the available lab space.

That said, there has to be a way to make it work without needing the GP oversight. If you need a mobile phone number to book it, then it's easy to track anyone trying to book too many slots. You could even set it up to start charging for a test for anyone who tries to book more than two a month. Make them go through their GP if they want more free tests.

Slight problem there Seamus, you could get it on the way home from the test.
Agree they need tighter controls, that needs to start with GP's and their nurses. Maybe if we looked at positivity rates coming from GP's, there is a massive amount of misdiagnosis going on and that's probably down to them getting paid for every referrals. I'd bet there's doctors out there with 100% misdiagnosis rates, the average misdiagnosis is what 98/99%. Something seriously wrong with the system.

If someone gets referred to a test and tests negative, that's a good thing, not a failure of the GP system.

Am I missing something here? Why do we not just have drive through testing centers like in the UK. No referral needed, just rock up and get a test and a result by text within 24 hours. Surely that is not rocket science

Handy €€€ for all our Gp’s. Everyone has to get a slice of the pie in this country.

Getting it wrong 99 out of 100 times is not good by any stretch of the imagination, to me it says GP's are either milking the system as there getting paid to do nothing or they have close to 0 understanding of symptoms. There is something wrong somewhere.
If they were picking up 10/20% I'd say very good.

Oops that’s me in trouble then as I’m presently doing 6 tests per month, and nope I’m definitely not a hypochondriac.

It's been well flagged that cases are expected anyway in that setting but you would have expected a few weeks to go by first.

How is this possible? We were told it magically ceases to be contagious in schools.

A real head scratcher that one.

    Reported by RTE news https://www.rte.ie/news/education/2020/0901/1162526-coronavirus-school/
A primary school in Dublin has sent home a class of students as a result of a positive case of Covid-19 in one of their pupils.

The principal of the school confirmed to RTÉ's Today with Claire Byrne that they have a positive case and the class has been sent home as a precautionary measure, based on public health advice.

The school in question returned from their summer holidays last Wednesday.

The child did not contract Covid-19 through transmission in the school, the principal has said.

    No one ever said that.

Yeah, that's seems to working really well...
    https://self-referral.test-for-coronavirus.service.gov.uk/antigen/name
We are experiencing very high demand for testing at the moment. Please try again tomorrow.
This is your issue. People with symptoms will see that and think "fvck it, can't be arsed, I'll just see how it goes".

At least with our system you will get a test if you have symptoms.

Class sent home, which means the pods are working as planned, no? This is exactly what should happen. Says nothing about the school closing.

If people are gonna be posting every single thing about schools now and saying “i told you so” there’s literally no point for this thread anymore

An outbreak or just one confirmed case?

One confirmed case and the Principal of the school said it wasn’t contracted in the school. The school reopened last Wednesday.
