I could be wrong but I reckon some people will be very disappointed if there isn't a major spike in cases as a result of the schools going back just so they can say "I told you so"

Believe me you are so right you only have to scroll back on the posts to see what you are on about

    Updated at-risk figures:
22 new cases + 1 cluster in Roma community
6 new cases + 1 cluster in direct provision
2 new cases + 1 cluster in homeless services

Medical professionals took the view that the risk was far too great to such patients. It would be hard to find one who disagreed.

I think this man would. Whether it's in Ireland or in Britain, the effect of the lockdown on cancer patients in general is the same.

Adrian Rogers is one of the first of the many patients for whom, terribly sadly, that is now coming true.
Mr Rogers has liver cancer and should have had an operation in early April.

Doctors cancelled it because of the risks of catching coronavirus in hospital.

Now he's been told his cancer is terminal.

Welcome that the DP situation appears to have stabilised - presumably the Roma susceptibility is also due to overcrowding?

I don't like the way they're trying to cover up the process plants by calling them work places. I know that's what they are but it seems it's deliberately said like that to divert the publics attention

Won’t stop them, if it doesn’t spike soon, it will be wait til winter etc etc.

There will be cases in schools, don’t think anyone disputes that but let’s see how the first one is managed and how much community transmission there is before we panic

Chatting to the wife before she went to work this morning. From her experience in her hospital in Dublin, a lot of the recent admissions are quick turn-arounds. Mostly young enough people with non life threatening underlying conditions, but get into a bit of trouble breathing. Some even brought on by panic attacks. Kept in overnight, given some oxygen and discharged after a day or two to self isolate. I think she also said her hospital hasn't seen any new ICU admissions in 2 months. But i could be wrong on that one.

Seems the profile for hospital admissions has definitely changed. Even with the recent uptick in cases. I couldn't even tell you the number of cases recently. Just know from seeing some news articles that they increased. My wife was a different person earlier in the year but she's back to her usual self the last number of weeks and the worry she had is completely gone. I honestly even forget Covid is knocking about most of the time and i'm seeing my wife head off to a Covid ward on her work days. Wearing a mask and social distancing are second nature to us now. Take your precautions, but this constant reading about Covid and looking at daily cases isn't good for your mind.

at this point i think they should stop the daily press conferences and reporting of numbers. it does no one any good. report it if there's a significant outbreak somewhere and leave it at that.

So meat factories are cold and damp environments and covid is easier to spread?

What about a cold and damp house in winter? Can we still open a window in a cold house in winter?

How do we better protect ourselves for winter?

It can’t spread if it’s not in the house.

Concentrate on not letting it in.

They’re not yobs. They’re just young people having fun. Was not that long ago since I’d did all that and I can tell you it used be more like Beirut come 2/2.30 am outside chippers etc in the early 2000s. This was nothing

Seriously can you open a window in a cold house? You are asking boards? That's between you and those that live with you.

The number of deaths and seriously ills remaining low is a real positive. Hopefully this trend continues even if there are spikes in the coming months.

I’m seeing some news reports (well done WHO for losing even more credibility) talking about Sweden as if somehow now their strategy is right because numbers in other parts of Europe (infections, not necessarily deaths) are increasing. I don’t see how one correlation proves the other right.

Norway have a death rate of 49 per million and Finland have 60. Sweden’s is 574. That’s how more restrictions v less restrictions turned out in that part of Europe. The worst country in Asia had just under half Sweden’s death rate. Only a handful of countries in the world have a worse death per million ratio. Isn’t that what we are all focusing on now? Deaths , not cases?!

Maybe going forward we need to have less restrictions (once deaths and seriously ill remain low) but nobody should be looking at Sweden for guidance. They are still the Scandinavian basket case they looked back in March.

The death rate is irrelevant, it’s the total number of deaths (from all causes related to the virus) that counts. It’s probably at least another year before we know who had the correct strategy. Increased deaths due to cancer and other health issues will need to be added to the totals.

Maybe in a year or two somebody can crunch some numbers that makes Sweden’s approach look more successful or less horrifying but right now the best you can say is “‘maybe it will be Proven to be better”.

Asides from that , your own post proves my point, nobody should be holding up Sweden up as a country to follow.

Maybe, but we won’t know who to follow until it is all over.

I think a lot of the Swedish deaths were due to letting the virus into nursing homes, like us. An awful lot of countries seem to have made that error.

Maybe NPHET could talk to WHO Director-General Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesu about opening pubs, as he seems to think it's reasonable enough to keep the closures to nightclubs and packed stadiums. Perhaps even he'd risk a pint without frozen pizza:

According to Mr Tedros, "If countries are serious about opening up, they must be serious about suppressing transmission and saving lives," he said, insisting that "opening up without having control is a recipe for disaster".

"One major thing countries could do to control the virus is prevent so-called amplifying events like filling stadiums with sports fans, large religious gatherings or packed nightclubs."

Mr Tedros said: "Avoid these amplifying events so that the other economic sectors can actually open up and the economy can go back into life."

"I think we can live without going to the stadium."

2 interesting (to me) pieces from Irish Times and RTE:

IRISH TIMES: The incidence of Covid-19 in Ireland is higher than it is in Sweden for the first time in the pandemic, new figures show.

Ireland recorded 30.6 cases of the virus per 100,000 population over the last 14 days, according to an update today from the European Centre for Disease Control (ECDC).

This is up to 12 times higher than Ireland’s lowest incidence, recorded in late June, but marks a slight improvement on the previous day after weeks of steady increase.

Sweden, where aversion to lockdowns and most other stringent restrictions has attracted massive international scrutiny, saw its incidence drop steeply in the latest ECDC update, to 23.4 cases per 100,000 population.

The death rate in both countries is the same, at 0.1 per 100,000 population over the past 14 days.

At least 17 other European countries now have lower incidences of Covid-19 than Ireland, despite many of them experiencing increases over the past few months.

The figures show that while Ireland was not alone in experiencing a rise in cases over this period, its surge was bigger than in many other EU states.

    RTE)
Sweden attracted worldwide attention earlier this year when it stayed open throughout the first months of the coronavirus pandemic, and now it is holding out again, this time refusing to recommend the use of masks.

While most of the world has come to terms with covering their noses and mouths in crowded places, people in Sweden are going without, riding buses and metros, shopping for food, and going to school maskless, with only a few rare souls covering up.

Public health officials there argue that masks are not effective enough at limiting the spread of the virus to warrant mass use, insisting it is more important to respect social distancing and hand-washing recommendations.

The Scandinavian country has the world's seventh highest death toll at 575 per million inhabitants, mainly due to its failure to protect the elderly in nursing homes in the early stages of the pandemic.

Sweden never closed its schools, businesses or cafes and restaurants, allowing the virus to circulate, and has therefore had a consistently high level of community transmission.

But unlike many countries in Europe seeing a resurgence of cases - such as France, the Netherlands, Germany, Belgium, Spain and Italy - Sweden's data now seems to be pointing in the right direction: down.

Its daily death toll peaked in April and is now down to a couple of deaths a day, the number of cases have been in steady decline since early June, and its R-number has pretty much stayed under 1 since early July.

Health agency director-general Johan Carlson told a press conference on 18 August that there may be situations - such as doctor and dentist visits and on public transport - where face mask recommendations could be issued.

State epidemiologist Anders Tegnell of the Public Health Agency insists scientific studies have not proven that masks are effective in limiting the spread of the virus, suggesting they can do more harm than good if used sloppily.

"There are at least three heavyweight reports - from the World Health Organization, the ECDC and The Lancet report that the WHO cites - which all state that the scientific evidence is weak. We haven't carried out our own assessment," he recently told reporters.

Meanwhile, Spain has registered more than 23,000 new coronavirus cases since Friday, health emergency chief Fernando Simon told a news conference today, suggesting the infection rate had declined slightly from a peak reached the previous week.

Health ministry data showed 2,489 new cases were diagnosed in the past 24 hours, while the cumulative total of cases since the onset of the pandemic hit 462,858.

Five people died in the past day, bringing the total death toll to 29,094, the data showed.

The latest statistics could be modified in future as Spain retroactively adjusts its daily data.

The United Kingdom recorded 1,406 daily confirmed cases of Covid-19, according to government data published today, down from 1,715 a day earlier.

Two people died within 28 days of testing positive for the disease, the daily statistics release said, bringing the total death toll under that measure to 41,501.

Finally, proof that not getting hysterical helps, and that masks cause coronavirus :pac:

Two days of low cases after a fortnight of our highest incidence rates since the peak means normality is now a foregone conclusion to many in this thread. It's like Trump's America or a goldfish bowl.
