    Who owns the ECB?

I’m sure you can google that. Not sure how relevant this is in the given context.

Does anyone know if construction sites will remain open?

They can although the current social distancing measures obviously stay in place. Whether or not that will still be the case in 2 weeks time largely depends on how well people comply with the restrictions.

Thanks. Doesn't seem to be a very sensible decision, builders usually commute long distances and there were outbreaks in building sites in Dublin already. Hopefully there will be some form of targeted and mass testing to prevent further outbreaks.

Just realised on reading these new 3 County restrictions that shopping for essential items is only permitted within your own county. My dilemma is going to affect many living in very rural locations on the borders of these counties.

My shopping requires crossing one county into another and even at that it's 19 km to the nearest town. If I'm correct, I can no longer do this and have to stay within County. Fine but that now requires at least a 35km drive, this is just extraordinary, there is a local shop but they don't and can't supply essentials and of course its a lot more expensive. I can't understand why residents of each county affected can't stay within the containment bubble and at least shop for essentials. I support the measures but not this restriction on shopping for essentials.

How did you do it back at the start when it was 2km? Or 5km?

What Does the rest of Europe Have anything to do with this? Watching others and copying their strategies is not a way out of this. Other countries are struggling even more, which means same strategy will work better under certain circumstances.

So every country is doing the same thing yet somehow we are wrong. Seems to be common theme in this thread.

What is the alternative to locking down these counties? No lockdown and just let the clusters spread all over the country? That’s not a solution.

You may not recall shopping for essentials was always allowed even during the big lockdown, the 2km 5km you refer too was for exercise. Furthermore 20km was at one time I believe the max you could travel, leaving 1km to spare in my case.

Precisely, no mention of shopping for essentials unless its for farming, animals and quite clearly says you can't stop if entering one of the counties, so the border is 1km from house, nearest main shops was 19km, but now I've to stay in my own county, nearest main shops 35km, just bizzare

I intend too, on a more positive note, the sun is splitting the sky's, but as I look out onto the road, Gardai have just set up a check point, you couldn't make it up, just extraordinary, to put my location into context, when birds fly over, they bring a packed lunch :)

You couldn`t make what up? And what is extraordinary about a Garda checkpoint in the circumstances? You re not making any sense.

Because it’ll have about as much use in controlling Covid as doing a raindance in the middle of the road every half hour

Likewise pal. For the sake of those who might place any store in anything you contribute you might try to actually start posting something constructive for a change instead of the same old well worn threadbare comments.

But yet you're here commenting on them and following them. I never initiated comment- you did ;) I couldn't tell you what you posted as like I said I didn't give a flying ****e what you think or say. Which evidently isn't mutual as you follow mine.

Unfortunately it looks like that. I had hoped we'd get to Autumn/Winter but this sneaky fcuker of a virus cares not a jot.

The government needs to think more of the economy this time round

Covid Payments are getting reduced next month and its hard to see that changing

The confused heads on some lads as they realise their beloved lockdown is as much use as a chocolate teapot in combating the virus.

Penny dropping - slowly, slowly - they'll get there in the end.

What lockdown. We've come out of a lockdown hence the virus gathers pace.

    Keep up.

Isolate the vunerable, let the rest keep keep the economy going. The alternative is Ireland will be a failed dog eat dog state.

There is a very real argument though that we may have to live with this and manage our way through it. Lockdowns like this aren't viable in the medium to long term. We can't keep forking out €300 a week to everyone who can't work but we also shouldn't just sacrifice those people. Then again, do we sacrifice the high risk people?

What a horrible choice politicians face because this is a balancing act between public health, mental health and economics. And no matter what they do, they'll be lambasted for it.

We don't sacrifice anyone. The whole world is going to be printing money over the next few years it's not just us in this boat thankfully. We protect everyone and leave nobody behind.

If someone told you they'd give you 300 a week to not work (for months) because you (99.9%) would get a mild flu that lasts a few days you'd laugh at them. That's not a good policy.

I’ve been saying it for 5 months.

It’s a waste of time for you and me to type here, you’re up against 5 months of RTE indoctrination.

There is a bill building that will have to be paid back eventually. When that happened the last time, the working (wo)man picked up the bill and is still picking up the bill through USC. It's not tenable to do this in the long term. The US are reducing their unemployment payment substantially in September for example.

Also, by locking down, we are sacrificing business owners who may not be able to meet their short term obligations and will lose their business. We're also impacting the mental health of those who can't work. I know if I didn't have work, I'd struggle.

There is no right or perfect answer. I'm just throwing problems rather than solutions out there but whatever the government decide to do, there will be losers.
