Hi all! We have been experiencing an issue on site where threads have been missing the latest postings. The platform host Vanilla are working on this issue. A workaround that has been used by some is to navigate back from 1 to 10+ pages to re-sync the thread and this will then show the latest posts. Thanks, Mike.

Really enjoyed the book and it should be a fairly straight-forward job to translate it to TV.

    Well...

    Lovecraft eh...

    *watches trailer*

Huh. Big slobbering monster dogs eh. Not sure they've quite got the whole "Lovecraft" aspect down?

    Dull show. Preachy mess

    Really enjoyable opener.

Looks like it's going down the Watchmen route with user reviews of "white man gets upset cause show highlights all the bad things white man did".

It was a bloody mental opening episode. Loved it. :)

It really takes a turn towards the end. It's utterly insane but I'm loving it strangely.

Watched this last night and really enjoyed it. The ending was mental :):)

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 60,881 ✭✭✭✭Agent Coulson

Well that was god damn great and then last 20 minutes just made it.

  • Registered Users Posts: 520 ✭✭✭Full_Circle_81

I enjoyed that more than I thought I would, not having watched a single trailer or read the book.
The only thing I'll say is that I thought the effects in opening shot looked quite well (in an OTT pulpy on purpose kind of way), but then found the effects at the end quite ropey (to put it mildly).

The actual racism was scarier than the many eyed monsters, why did the girl say kilometres when the sheriff was following them

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 16,669 ✭✭✭✭Galwayguy35

Not sure what to make of it yet, the monsters looked something like what was on the original Ghostbusters film nearly 40 years ago.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 29,284 ✭✭✭✭CastorTroy

Will keep watching as the only other thing I have on Mondays is Muppets.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 10,501 ✭✭✭✭Slydice

1: Solid episode getting across the setting. Plenty to do from here. The Princess at the start was done kinda cool.

Once I see JJ Abrams name linked it's an automatic no from me

Its so funny, I went from being someone who got so excited whenever I saw his name attached to anything, to being super wary and sceptical. His name just screams "mystery-box" to me now and I usually fear straight away that the story is going to have a hugely unsatisfying ending with a mystery that never gets explained properly.

I guess with this, at least its based on a book, so I imagine that the story has more focus than the ones he is normally directly involved in.

    Loved this...

.. having not read much about it.. the last 10 minutes were a curveball to say the least!

They've done it before.. it'll just be the pilot uploaded I reckon.

Think it's a great idea on their part. Give the show a massive boost to its profile, spread the word, get people talking. Let people have a taste of the type of shows that HBO have

I had seen the adds for this and was not sure what expect from it never having read the book or books but I have to say when I watched it at first I was not sure but I really enjoyed it. Looking forward to the next episode tomorrow.

Lovecraft was a bigoted racist his views on anyone not AngloSaxon we're quite extreme,

A great follow up episode keeping the crazy bonkers story going.

Well that was another very interesting episode. It is certainly different and I have to say the scenes and effects are very well done.

Disappointed by the Monsters in epi 1. not the image I ever got from a Lovecraft story. A little too conventional, sleek, predatory, fast. Lovecraft monsters rarely aspired to look like we expect predatory creatures to look, always on the verge of undescribable, piles of tentacles, rarely sleek, amorphous blobs with too many eyes, mouths, limbs and shapes that make no evolutionary sense, almost as if they are the abominable creations of some wicked deity , suited to different dimensions or conditions totally alien to us.

That all added to the horrifying aspect, and this has let the show down a little so far.
they toned up the race issues, but toned back on the descriptive and creative aspects of his creations that make them something that could only come from lovecraft, which are one of the big reasons lovecrsft is still popular in spite of the racist undertones.

2: More development but clearly not out of the woods yet. Great to see Michael K. Williams. Guessing they'll slow it down a lil to more of the pace it needs for whatever is planned in the finale.

Says he died at 46, he looked about 66.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 33,304 ✭✭✭✭gmisk

    Episode 1 was a blast I thought
Episode 2 was a bit too bonkers for me tbh it seemed to try to cram too much in. Also felt very CGI heavy.
Episode 3 back on form, really enjoyed it.

    So just a quick question
is it going to be almost a different horror genre each week? Ep1 monster movie. Ep2 almost like an occult theme Ep3 haunted house

its based on a collection of short stories that have been rewritten to have a through line

The book it is based is quite episodic, I remember thinking how suited it would be to TV when I read it.

It all comes together at the end.

    Brilliant thanks for those responses.
The guardian are doing a weekly overview which is excellent I have to say.

    American Horror Story: Lovecraft.

Finding it a bit of a drag, to be honest. Think the episodes could be shortened.

As someone pointed out elsewhere, considering what we've see so far, if 3 young white men go missing in that area, would you really expect that house to still be standing in one piece?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,133 ✭✭✭GottaGetGatt

Jurnee Smollett has being carrying the show so far, very good Actress.

Well that was another great and very weird episode. I did kind of think that it needed something between Arnham and where they are now back home because the way it started you would think you missed on episode. All the same I enjoyed it and look forward to next world episode as well. I might by the books after this to read.

Apologies should have been more clear about what I was talking about.

Was reading up on Lovecraft himself, didn't realise he died so young.

Really enjoyed that episode but I honestly haven't a breeze what is going on plot wise.

I read the Avclub review and maybe it's because I haven't read the book, but I missed loads of the plot points. I've no idea who the baddies are, and what they are trying to achieve.

That episode was a bit more subdued compared to the last three I have to say.
