Meat factories were noted early in this disease as being a high risk environment. This is what led to Cavan having (or maybe still has - haven’t checked the most recent figures on this) the highest rate of infection per population in Ireland.

Meat factories have also been the source of outbreaks in the US and the UK.

    https://www.bbc.com/news/53137613

This should have led to a targeted aggressive approach from the individual factories and public health department but this has failed.

Workers in these factories are obviously vulnerable in their workplaces but also on their home fronts too as even if the best precautions were taken in their factories (which seems doubtful), their living situation is a further breeding ground for infectious diseases.

Looks like gov is short of manpower. It's up to people to manage this. I am off to vacation in Spain next week. Positive outlook:D

They didn't do a better job imo they just had the public behind them. That lazy "ah sure it be grand" public who virtue signaled the fcuk out of support the HSE and clap for Ireland etc... a few months back now have lost interest.

Main thing here is to not panic lads. There’s a clear issue and the authorities are dealing with it.

Main thing here is to not panic but take precautions for yourself and your family if you're in affected areas. As seen before Covid can spiral very quickly.

If this crisis continues, you'll be glad to be eating that food in a few months time :P:P:P
We've a cat and he eats Canagan cat food. If it came to it, I'd eat that stuff happily! I've been tempted in the past :D

How do you they haven't? We have clusters, they've been identified and contact traced fast - what else are you expecting?

We can't have health inspectors following the staff around 24x7 making sure they are socially distancing, not attending house parties, not going abroad on holidays etc.

eh?? It's politicians spreading the virus

We were told to social distance but no some, the ah sure we can't get it or we are young we won't get sick or die people can't follow a simple rule.
We were asked to wear masks but no some people don't want to wear them because they think it does no good or some other reason.
We were asked to only spend 1.45 hours max in the pub but no some people can't even do that.

If people can't follow simple rules for theirs and other peoples safety then infections will go up.

The whole point of lockdown from NPHET was to eridacte this, we did an excellent Job, it was Leo decided it wasn't practical and we couldn't compare ourselves to other islands who'd managed it as we were Europeans first and Islanders second.
Do not give the previous government any credit as they done jack **** until they decided to disagree with NPHET which it appears to be was a stupid decision based on economics not the health of the Nation.

What's the NI problem, are you telling me the Spanish wouldn't further annex Gibraltar if they thought it was a threat.
To say we can't control our borders is ludicrous, have you an Irish passport if not f off. It's really that simple. I'll gladly go help control a border checkpoint as so will many others.

Theres a physical border between Spain and Gibraltar. Bit of a difference between us and NI now.

1 road in and out of Gibraltar, here over 300 border crossings.

    You can see the problem

The schools going back will be like a bomb going off

Speading into homes like wildfire by October

It's a horrible situation and there is nothing we can do

    They need education

Meh, if young kids, under 10 anyway, didn't get educated for a year would it really matter to their long term education?

    A 69 is always good.
    Don't be an idiot

I thought it was funny. Would have been better without the 'A' in front as it wasn't needed.

But it was a joke and they aren't banned in here, whether you find them funny or not.

Besides Carrolls what other meat factories infected?

I'm not sure what the HSA could do to prevent a factory worker from going home to a bedroom shared with 5 other strangers in a hotel where they share dining facilities and use the same bathrooms.

If the conditions exist for a person in a factory to be infected then there’s a problem.

2 additional outbreaks at factories in Kildare town & Timahoe is all they said. No names

Early on in this the government suggested we aim for the South Korea styled approach, so why aren't they doing this now in terms of testing? When Korea had that nightclub linked cluster they went off and did about 50,000 tests to track it and get a grip on it, should they not be considering widespread testing in the worst affected counties (not just close contacts).

It was to suppress the virus in the community and flatten the curve.

The very size of this cluster shows the measures taken within these settings have failed.

Videos on social media showing a total lack of compliance with basic public health advice. The HPSC published a specific guideline for meat factories but that is useless unfortunately without enforcement.

    https://www.hpsc.ie/a-z/respiratory/coronavirus/novelcoronavirus/guidance/outbreakmanagementguidance/outbreakcontrolinmeatfactories/Interim%20Guidance%20COVID-19%20Meat%20Factories.pdf

Also very worrying to hear that contacts within direct provision centres were still going out to work in other places after cases had been confirmed. Cannot verify if this is true but beggars belief if it is.

A cluster is better than a random rapid increase in community transmission but the bigger the cluster the less likely it can be contained and harder to envisage that it will not lead to more community spread.

So we block 300 roads, what's the problem. We've done it before.

I completely agree, I think the old story of children not being spreaders and they successfully opened schools in europe has run its course. Time now for parents to sit up and make sure their school is safe.....No more teacher bashing, lets all work together. Even Ciara Kelly has stopped giving out....

If the conditions exist for a person in a factory to be infected then there’s a problem.

None of the guidelines are a magic shield, the virus doesn't stop after 2 metres, handwashing will only do so much, masks are not 100% and there is now ample evidence some of the spread is airborne transmission.

The reality is it is going to spread in workplaces like meat processing plants if the virus gets in, they simply can't make these environments 100% safe and continue to operate.

Wasn't a child in a creche the spreader in Limerick?
