Is there a proper breakdown of where transmission is taking place? I've seen articles mentioning meat factories, households etc but no real statistics. Would be very helpful for everyone.

I'm not sure that this is the full story. I suspect that the various medical services served as a significant source of covid infections.

This was shown in a study in Italy earlier in the year.

Agreed if a home is in lockdown with no visitors then it can only be staff that bring it in because the virus cannot magically appear.

Bear in mind that it has been well shown by now that a lot of people who had the infection don't show for Antibodies.
    Either
    a) they fight it off with T Cells and never produce antibodies
    or
    b) they produce antibodies at the time but these reduce in number after a few weeks/months to become undetectable (T-Cells are like memory cells and can quickly reproduce them if needed).

Alot of experts are going x3/x4 as the real number

15-20% country likely have been infected at some point

Malta has a relatively low case rate, hasn't even reached 1000 yet so it's not entirely surprising or concerning

It is concerning.. they have had a considerable rise in cases in the past 2 weeks linked with Festas (street parties) and music festivals held in hotels. The had managed to control the cases for the first 4 months and did quite well by closing the airports and tracing cases.

Edit: it is concerning for Malta, not Ireland

Today's spread seems to be beyond the clusters of recent days.

    81% under 45
42 are associated with outbreaks or are close contacts of a confirmed case

It's just a guess and can't really be confirmed. We do the same with the flu' every year. Prevalence testing is still useful for epidemiological mapping.

Except Bergamo showed 50% of people had it.
Obviously if 95% of us didn’t have it then we are still susceptible to outbreaks as we don’t have herd immunity. (Not even this season)

A wider dispersement of cases must make it more difficult to contain countrywide.

I'd say so, it was my first thought.

Travel is a red herring and has been for weeks.

Travel has nothing whatsoever to do with the clusters in direct provision centres, factories who, either on an individual employee level or a higher management level have clearly not taken the guidelines in any way seriously.

It's baffling how very early on, it was recognized that both these sectors were particularly vulnerable to emergence of clusters, yet here we are, nearly five months down the road and judging by the emergence of an enormous amount of cases in the two above which has sent our known case load spiralling, it's clear that nothing has been learned on an industry wide basis. As I said before, the employers likely fulfilled their obligations by throwing up posters and installing hand sanitizer but after that complacency clearly kicked in and look what has happened.

Why are these factories and DP centres not being slated in the media? (as they deserve to be)

It's because everyone seems to love talking about the red herrings of travel and pubs.

Just thinking out loud....These clusters started with one person (in each venue, though I know the DP centre and Naas factory are linked). any thoughts as to where those people got it? Are these the unknown community transmissions or are they travel related?

That's a big jump for Wexford.

    Spread over 13 counties.

The only way forward is a NZ style border closure.

Otherwise we will be in and out of lockdown till a vaccine comes along.

I can see it eventually happening in Nov when it should happen now.

4/50 or 8% of cases community transmission

    Apparently so

so have people stopped dying from it or what ?

It seems to be mainly younger people getting infected, so therefore less deaths. But there is a lag between cases been reported and when people die from the disease. There will be more deaths at some stage.

The majority of cases are under 45 so these people can fight it easier. When it's spread to the vulnerable and elderly then we'll see deaths again

Dr Ronan Glynn, Acting Chief Medical Officer, Department of Health, said; “I know the decision yesterday not to move to Phase 4 will have been disappointing for many. However, NPHET’s priority must be to control the spread of this virus in our communities and to protect the progress that we have achieved to date.

COVID-19 is an extremely contagious virus and we have seen a significant increase in its spread across multiple counties over recent days. We are monitoring this very closely.

    Not great.

you don't die for a month or more after you get it.

I would have said no chance a short few weeks back but looking inevitable now as we move into the winter.

Our economy is collapsing either way at this stage.

The cases in Laois are also linked to a Naas factory also.
