    What is the question?

Yes, of course you've no idea. You only replied twice with something about Germany and then the UK, when we were discussing Australia. It's in a reply quoting you on three occasions but you've no idea what it is.

    Good luck, you're on Ignore

Well thats a little bit nasty. I will answer your question to best of my ability if I can. Why are you being so hostile? Its not my fault the way things are.

How is everyone feeling about the kinda soon to be Winter season?

The feckin Summer has been tough enough, just wondered what with Flu and all the rest of the bugs that seem to float around at that time.

I wish I could escape, but nowhere is safe anymore is it?

Singapore or South Korea seem a lot safer than a lot of places, add Taiwan as well.

    Taiwan - 475 cases 441 recoveries deaths 7
    Singapore - 53,051 cases recoveries 46, 926 deaths 27
    South Korea - 14,389 cases recoveries 13,280 deaths 301.

If you want to get into it, you got to get out of it. (Hawkwind 1982)

COVID restrictions will be just as effective against the flu realistically. Australia has had a quiet flu season.

Thanks bodhrandude, but I did the long hauls when a bit younger, couldn't face wearing a mask for a 12 or whatever hour journey nowadays!

Escape is actually very limited now, if you want to observe the rules really.

But then again the powers that be want us to keep our few bob here now. That's fine in the Summer, but not so inviting in the dark days of Winter.

BTW whatever happened to pushing the clock forward or backward can never remember, so we would have lighter evenings in Winter? That sounds better and better now and should be done stat. IMV.

Why have there been so many outbreaks in meat factories? Am I missing something here?

There's no proven seasonal element and I feel our Covid prevention measures will also suppress the spread of flu.

That's great, because the flu vaccine is usually predicated on Southern Hemisphere experience.

Possibly living conditions of the employees as much as the work environment.

In this case many of the workers lived together in direct provision. On the other hand, meat plants are the ideal breeding ground for disease. Cold, compact, not much ventilation, easy pickings.

That's with regard to the strain of flu the vaccine targets. While I hope we have little flu, the volume of cases in Australia doesn't in itself impact on the vaccine. It will still be important for vulnerable people and health care workers to get the flu vaccine.

I'm disappointed seeing another day with another high number of cases. We were doing so well a few weeks ago with low numbers. I was really hoping to see a reversal in the high numbers and see lower case numbers today.

I know the acting CMO tried to bring calm to the situation and explain the majority is connected with clusters. He did say approximately 1 in 5 is community transmissions. We had an average of 46 cases a day over the past few weeks. Taking approximately 1 in 5 is community transmissions that will give 64 cases of community transmissions where they don't know how these people are picking up the infection. That's a lot. Unfortunately the numbers are only going to go up.

Some people are too dim to maintain social distancing.

There’s clearly not being enough done about factories. Over 100+ associated with the dog food factory and now you have another in Offaly.

Yep, at this stage I’m thinking maybe it should be the meat factories that should be closed instead of bars, atleast until they can prove they can provide a safe working environment.

So much for it all being Dublin centric.

HSA need to get out of their beds/sofas and inspect now.

Over 3000 cases in Spain again today.

    >2,000 are antibody tests today. But 968 are current/PCR tests which is ~3x higher than they were seeing while plateauing after coming down from their peak.

Over 3000 cases in Spain again today.

I am not sure what is happening in Spain at the weekends... the overall barchart for Europe/EEA appears to show that they did not report any cases over the last 4 weekends. This has led to large reported numbers on Mondays (the yellow in the barchart).

Sadly the barchart is showing the number of daily European cases slowly creeping upwards.

Despite the spikes in Spain, and the fact that it is on the Red list, the flights to Spain from Dublin are merrilly departing and returning.

Meanwhile those of us who decided not to travel are dealing with the restrictions as best we can. There is no escape from the entitled AFAIS. And I understand a minority of this travel is essential for hopefully genuine reasons.

Edit does not appear to be working.

I should clarify that the daily case numbers are reported from the European Centre for Disease Prevention and Control at around 8am CET every day, so Mondays figures appear on a Tuesday.
