The Nobel Prize-winning scientist who looked at raw data and correctly predicted Ireland's death and infection rate would "burn itself out" in the last two weeks of May is back to reassure people there will be no second wave.
Dr Michael Levitt (73) was speaking as he prepared to jet off on his summer holiday travelling in Europe.

The Nobel Laureate made world headlines when he found that the number of people infected with coronavirus in any given region was not growing exponentially. He also correctly calculated the demise of China's spread long ahead of most health experts.

Well that's the best news I've read about it all week

Has he correctly predicted much more about this? (apart from the above)

    Really hoping he's right

Will phase 4 be an all or nothing thing. I'm involved in athletics and the Leinster and National Championships in August are dependant on the outdoor limit going to 500. The risk of having these competitions behind closed doors is as close to zero as they come. Why should we suffer because pubs aren't deemed safe for opening? I'm sure GAA, Soxcer6abd other sports feel the same, but athletics of all sports, with no physical contact is as low risk as they come.

As far as I know the media is reporting the outside limit will be extended

We were talking about this early on- I think it’s quite hard to find his predictions. He’s on twitter but you have to scroll to find links. Stanford had a link to a basic website but it’s not working today. I’d love for people to look at his work and discuss it because I can’t understand the graphs but it’s quite hard to find it all.

There is some risk in everything unfortunately, but outdoor events are lower - not zero, lower.

The problem we have is that case numbers seem to be going up, and we need to create room to get schools open. We can't open schools safely if the virus is spreading in the community. If we all wore masks and stopped with the parties it might create room for other things to re-open.

Can you not still run around the track without a crowd?

I think his predictions are being taken out of context, and used to try and justify a lifting of restrictions. In reality if you read a bit more, he is giving predictions based on the restrictions remaining in place - but that's being ignored by the headline writers.

I've seen him in the media a few times. I think he's happy enough to accept the attention of those who most acutely feel their civil liberty being curtailed.

Am I missing something - how does going on holidays abroad make him a spoofer? If his facts and predictive model hold up then he's far from a spoofer. Going on a holiday doesn't invalidate the model - it's a completely different issue.

Bad shït over the water, not a million miles away, in Manchester. Major incident declared, usually only done so in times of war or terror attack.

Cases rapidly rising , not good at all, I have a friend there who has a little girl with asthma, a confidant guy but he’s going out of his mind.

I meant the link to the Israel stuff. Didn't he get that very wrong?

When I clicked into the article it said this
Leader of Manchester City Council Richard Leese said: "People should not be alarmed that a major incident has been declared. This is standard practice for complex situations which require a multi-agency response.

Still though, looks more serious than the Leicester lockdown

The advice is no non essential travel, it may be essential in the mind of those travelling. If the government didn't want people to travel they could have put a ban in place. Then again people with trips booked would be able to claim. Far better if they concentrated on travellers from the US and UK arriving here instead of trying to shame citizens here into cancelling holidays.

I suppose instagram pictures they see as essential :P I agree travel incoming from covid hot spots needs forced quarantine and testing or complete banning

I think it’s a bit futile using the terms major incident, corona, and asking people not to be alarmed but hey, maybe .
