Did it well in the end. Wondering about not going for the black on a break there but was the right choice. Thats experience.

Yeah 90s Ken would have taken on the black and killed off the match,Then again 90s Ken would have won that match 6-0 comfortably.
I give him a good shot at beating Mark King and then the winner of Holt and Burns to qualify.
O'Brien is up against it v Brecel
Jordan Browne has a decent chance v Valfaei
Some decent matches on over the weekend

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 13,023 ✭✭✭✭Joe_ Public

At his best King would be tricky but King has been dreadful all season and Ken beat him recently somewhere, maybe Welsh or around that time. Holt alright on his day too but doubt ken will ever get a better chance than this to get back to the crucible so hopefully he can take it.

Vafaei is a player i like a lot but he's not pushed on as far as i thought. Been a tough time with his personal situation but ability not in doubt.

This Wilson v Ursenbacher is a real good contest. The swiss is very attacking and fluid, but am wondering how he's going to fare if he gets the chance to close it out.

Would love to see Ken make it. Or Jimmy but come on I know that is unlikely.

Listened to Dunphy's long interview with Ken on his 'The Stand' podcast. It was a rerun from a few years ago but it is well worth checking out. Could almost be back in the old snooker clubs of the 80s listening to it. Eamon Dunphy knows a lot about the scene.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 13,023 ✭✭✭✭Joe_ Public

Dunphy does love his snooker alright, always saw him nosing around goffs anytime i was there and his nephew had a go at the pro game back in the 90s.

Good win for Ursenbacher, dangerous opponent going forward.

This guy Heathcote is not bad.

    Carter under pressure already

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 558 ✭✭✭bradolf pittler

    Playing well alright.
    Especially on the long pots.
Jimmy and Fergal 1-1 in both their matches

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 13,023 ✭✭✭✭Joe_ Public

Playing well enough but getting at least 2 chances to win each frame. Carter looks totally off his game.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 13,023 ✭✭✭✭Joe_ Public

Fergal 3-1 against Brecel. Looks like he's dictating the flow of the game. Half way there!

Tough break for Jimmy there. Double the black but end up going in off. 4-1 down, bit of a mountain to climb now.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 558 ✭✭✭bradolf pittler

The wheels are starting to fall off with Heathcote.
A few wayward shots creeping in
Vital he wins the next frame if he's gonna win the match.

    Sickener for Jimmy

Fergal is 4-2 up now. It would be a really unlikely win. Is anyone watching it? What kind of game is it? Fergal just got a 79 break. Great stuff.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 13,023 ✭✭✭✭Joe_ Public

No pics but fergal just stolen frame to go 5-2 ahead. Obviously playing well. I dont see it as all that unlikely. Fergal is a fighter and can up his game under pressure, Brecel is young and talented but a bit brittle. Thats why he's not top 16.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,026 ✭✭✭Peter File

The Heathcote Carter game was entertaining. I hadnt seen or heard of heathcote before but he showed some steel to finish off carter.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 20,552 ✭✭✭✭El_Duderino 09

Couple of quick frames to Luca. 5-4. Hope fergal can get over the line.

Jaysus 60 point lead and got mugged somehow. Gone to decider now.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 13,023 ✭✭✭✭Joe_ Public

Brecel needs a snooker. Hopefully no more drama.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 13,023 ✭✭✭✭Joe_ Public

And gets over the line. Nervy one in the end but no matter. Just Liang Wenbo between him and a return to the crucible. Another ok opponent I'd say, good to watch but flaky as hell. Eminently winnable.

Have both Fergal and Ken secured their cards for next year now?

Neither as of yet. Both outside top 64 cut off point as things stand. Top 32 finish probably suffice but it's really tight and impossible to call. Also a further chance on the one year list but that could go anyway. Just keep winning matches is only way to be sure!

Interested as to how Fergal won a frame 37-29. Must have been a quality one!

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 13,023 ✭✭✭✭Joe_ Public

Ken 1-2 down, very scrappy match, threw second frame away with chance to go 2-0 up. Seemed to start well but standard quickly dropped. Hopefully can dig in and fight, king looks poor too.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 20,552 ✭✭✭✭El_Duderino 09

Ken 3-1 down now. Decent 60 break for Ken there. Pity he didn't kill off the frame but great lead.

Edit. King snatched that frame. So its 4-1 to king now

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 6,854 ✭✭✭zuutroy

Black off the spot missed at 60-0 and he loses it :(

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 13,023 ✭✭✭✭Joe_ Public

Disaster. Bit unlucky with the safety shot, gotta hurt.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 13,023 ✭✭✭✭Joe_ Public

Thought there was a handy snooker for ken off that red there but he didnt appear to think so!

Looked like massive fluke for king to start that break though didnt see any acknowledgment. Hard to see a way back from here.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 6,854 ✭✭✭zuutroy

Ken potting some great single balls buy also making too many mistakes and King is doing a good job of punishing them.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 13,023 ✭✭✭✭Joe_ Public

Massive let off after missing another frame ball. 3-5. Still in it.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 13,023 ✭✭✭✭Joe_ Public

End of the road for Ken I'm afraid. No excuses on the day, just didnt play well enough. Not sure where he goes from here.

Joe Perry losing the rag on other live table. Not sure I've ever seen that before.

Joe Perry losing the rag on other live table. Not sure I've ever seen that before.

It was about Clarke "distracting" Perry with his towel ???

I didn't see much in it myself
and Perry was under pressure throughout that match.

    Gentleman Joe :pac:

Didn't see it either; was flicking through the channels.

Saw the end of the frame, and he was talking to Clarke. Comms said he was explaining himself or apologising - something like that. Repeat on Eurosport 1 now. 3-2 to Clarke and Joe well up with 2 reds left. Think it's this or the next frame it happens. Have it on record.

Former World Champ Graeme Dott cruises past David Grace 6 - 0.

Yeah, wasnt deliberate and got the feeling perry was in a huff as much because he just wasnt playing well. Clarke did well to hold his nerve and close match out in the circumstances.

Joe is probably the closest thing to a shock in the qualification rounds so far.

Would love to see Dott get through. I always like him. He can still be excellent on his day. He seems to feel every bad shot more than most payers. I'd say his self-talk is abysmal.

Just seen it there - frame 7 it was.

I think Joe was right. He was going for maybe an 8/10 midrange pink into yellow pocket.

Clarke shouldn't have been moving around imo - pretty sure he was in Perry's line of vision.

Fergal on the live schedule tomorrow 1pm. Good news.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 13,023 ✭✭✭✭Joe_ Public

Huge let off for Fergal there, would have been a bodyflow losing that frame after Wenbo needing snookers.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 20,552 ✭✭✭✭El_Duderino 09

He's staying well in the match. If he can get back to 3-3 then it's already a decent performance. He's done himself proud.

    Ah damn it. It's 4-2.

Should have been level but let that frame slip. Frustrating cos Liang has been missing loads but not being punished sufficiently.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 20,552 ✭✭✭✭El_Duderino 09

Angles McManus doing well 6-3 lead over Louis Heathcoat.

The milkman (terrible nickname) losing toAshley Carry 6-3. Milkins has an average shot time in the 18 second range. That's impressive - but not really if you're losing.

5-2 to Wenbo now. Hard to see Fergal coming back from that.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 13,023 ✭✭✭✭Joe_ Public

This round is best of 19 so they'll be back to play to a finish tonight.

Oh, I hadn't copped it's the longer matches in this round. He's still in with a chance then.

I'll edit my earlier post so I'm not fake news.

Angles McManus is through. Comprehensive scoreline of 6-2 over Louis Heathcoat.

The milkman (terrible nickname) is out. Beaten by Ashley Carry 6-3. Milkins had an average shot time in the 18 second range. That's impressive - but not really if you're losing.

5-2 to Wenbo now. Hard to see Fergal coming back from that.

The matches are now best of 19.:)
    Jjust watching Selt 1 v 7 Maflin.
Really poor standard. Especially from Selt

Fergal off the hook again there. Not finishing out frames clinically enough, that was nearly the third he'd chucked away. 4-5 would be great session score if he could manage it.

Good steal that to get 4-5. Considering he butchered two frames it's only an ok scoreline but could have been a lot worse at the same time. If liang doesnt cut the errors, i can see fergal taking it after the customary battle.

If i was a top 16 guy looking on, I'd be thinking the one I'd want to avoid in the draw is Ursenbacher. Dangerous young opponent.

I'd be thinking the opposite,I havent seen anything from any of these players on show this year.
    41 centurys in 112 matches isn't a great return.
Famous last words but i doubt there will be any major 1st round shocks coming from this crop.

Yet there usually are a couple of first round shocks. Those guys have a few rounds under their belt by the time they qualify. They're warmed up so the first round gives the qualifier a small advantage in that sense.

The length of the tournament means that the qualifiers are massively disadvantaged if they were to get to get to the later rounds. So its an advantage in the first round but a big disadvantage by the later rounds.

I know what you mean but should the likes of Bingham,Hawkins and Bingtao who are 14,15,and 16 really fear Slessor,Maflin or Ursenbacher?
Like i said famous last words and anyone can have an off day but theres a huge gulf in class between the top players and the lower ranked guys

Yeah there really is a big difference in quality between the top guys and the rest. But, the qualifiers have to be both in good for and warmed up and in their stride by the first round in order to qualify. The top16 haven't played a competitive match in 6 weeks. These upsets do happen.
