People became infected by sharing a straw. If they were sharing straws, they probably had no problem getting close to each other.

Well night club, that's why, for once, I understand the government's move to postpone pubs opening, plenty of people are not able even piss straight after few pints.

OK he's ripping into the UK policy with his usual satire, but much of it applies here and the anti mask conspiracy nutters are everywhere.

NSFW etc. Curse words that may upset the easily upset and assorted pearl clutchers.

Many worry about Artificial Intelligence. I worry far more about Organic Idiocy.

    OK here's an example

    https://www.laoistoday.ie/2020/07/18/coronavirus-two-further-deaths-and-21-new-cases-as-laois-continues-covid-free-streak/

25 days (up to July 15th) without a new case in Laois. As of today there has been 267 cases total since this all started out of a population of 84697 (per 2016 census - quite probably more now)

How on earth are mandatory masks a proportional response in that case?

Speaking to a 'friend' this morning who was in Lidl every day all along just for something to do! Asked him was he going in as often now with the masks, said he doesn't wear one, staff on door asked him where was it and he answered that it wasn't compulsory and they let him in! Pity they didn't just tell him go home.

Same guy is in bookies frequently, no one there wearing masks either he said, owner mentioned it to him but again no go, owner said there was a decrease in customers when it was initially announced but they are all back again now that they know he won't enforce the mask wearing.

Tad annoying when I would feel guilty going into a shop without a mask so just avoid shops as much as possible!

Masks are mandatory in Spain almost everywhere including beach and cases are soaring. Most US wear masks also and cases are soaring. Explain this to me please?
Don't want to argue just stating facts
Meanwhile in Ireland most people are not wearing them and we are doing extremely well.

Also Vietnam, which has been used as an example in here a few times is seeing spikes.

Will this be enough 'new evidence' for HSE to update mode's of transmission beyond coughing, sneezing and touching to include talking, speaking, shouting, singing, whistling and breathing? Does Martin have the same horn for the Lancet as Leo does?

The simpleton paired down version of just coughing and sneezing as the only primary mode's of transmission has gone well beyond insulting and is tipping into extreme negligence.

Two new cases after 3 months of no cases. Jesus that's great. If only we could get to that.

And did I see a post where a poster unironically posted that most people in the US are wearing masks? They are in the states that are seeing a downturn alright.

Masks is the new stay at home. Every article on carnonavirus will have someone going on about masks in the first comment.

As in a method to help halt the spread of Covid 19?

Then yeah I suppose it is. What's the problem, it's infinitely better than staying at home, isn't it?

What's the issue.? Are you saying that pushing home the message is a good or bad thing?

Whats the point of going on about something that has nothing to do with the article?

If, as you said, it's an article on coronavirus then it has something to do with the article. That said, your assertion is an exaggeration because every article didn't have a "stay at home " line nor do current articles all include a mention of wearing face coverings.

Mmmmm yeah, their 7 day average has spiked from 2 or 3 to now 5 new cases per day...with a population of over 97 million mind you.

What was your point again? oh no I remember we are all 'maskzies' or something wasn't it. That makes about as much sense as your 'Vietnam having a spike in cases' notions.

Apologises if this has been discussed already but can shops mandate that their staff wear makes?
Previously when I had been in my local Tesco all staff had masks but today many had gone without, which surprised me.

Was so disappointed today in Centra and the owner was at the door asking if you had a mask and to wear it, if you didn't have one he instructed you to hand sanitise which are good things, but there was only about 20 percent wearing the masks, some people just don't care.

The thing there is to shop elsewhere if you're unhappy with the protocols in place. And tell the owner at the door on the way out.

Shop are not expected to police the public.
I don't know of any super markets or convenience stores that refuse enter for no mask in my town or nearby towns and cities.
I have to buy my food somewhere so what can I do?

Its in Salthill, there is only one other shop which is much smaller, no I'll stick with Centra, the man running it is a good skin, like he wasn't barring anyone without a mask but did make them use the hand sanitiser.

Plenty of shops are insisting on masks, as they are entitled to do. Others may not be actively policing it but their customers are adhering to it. A Spar here had no customers wearing masks last week and the owner didn't seem to care less. Dunnes had over 90% wearing masks and an XL shop was insisting on them being worn. Guess where many people shopped?
I went to Dunnes for the main shop and gave up using the Spar for my daily paper etc. in favour of the XL.

This weekend the Spar had signage in place and was asking that masks be worn. Most customers now wearing masks - so my neighbour tells me. I'll check it out early next week.

Perhaps that a shop in my area will eventually do something like that.
In the mean time I still have to buy food.

Do you think Tesco may force all staff to wear mask some time soon?

Was in Marks and Spencer early this morning . They have signs everywhere asking people to wear face covering . The vast majority had masks on and I saw very few without masks .
A little lad of about 4 ahead of me going in sanitized his hands with great gusto and donned his cute dinosaur mask and not a whinge to be heard
A whole family of parents with three kids did neither . Eejits .
I made sure to avoid that family and keep well away

Go first thing at opening if you can, or see if they have click and collect \ delivery options.
I would guess lowest risk is opening time as it's relatively quiet AND it doesn't have the collected 'emissions' of the day's customers yet.

Is that time of day not best left to the elderly and vulnerable?

Maybe a lot of elderly and vulnerable appreciate their lies ins :)

There are priority shopping hours which vary per supermarket:
LIDL opens at 8am but priority hours at 9am - don't go early on thursdays though as that's specials day.
Dunnes priority hours at 11am iirc.

There's a supermarkets thread on this forum if you want to get more info on specific stores.

People in shops are starting to actively avoid anyone without masks now. I saw it happen a few times today and I do it myself. Soon they’ll be like lepers.
