To be fair to them its not mandatory and it won't be on Monday either. We've been told the legislation will take time to draft.

Wouldn't exactly be going around questioning people at this stage

Ah it's not like I was demanding to know more friendly banter, it's not like I could give out, it'll be a cold day in hell before I wear a muzzle ordered by Micheál and Leo.

Wife and I were just in Dundrum, I'd agree with Beanybabog, at least 80% compliance, outside of food areas. Really impressive effort by everyone.

A muzzle? You aren't speaking rationally here.
If I knew of a local shopkeeper with your attitude, I would be certain not to go there and spend money in it.
And I wouldn't lose any sleep over such a business being shut down by authorities for public health breaches.
People so cavalier about this public health requirement may well be very cavalier with others.

I really hope people comply and start wearing masks. You could understand to an extent retail staff not wearing them as for the most part they are isolated behind a perspex screen when at the till. I'd expect any staff on the shopfloor to wear a mask for sure.

Most people think "it won't happen to me" and "shur it's only 5 minutes", but imagine the blind panic if someone who is not wearing a mask coughs in your direction.

The thing about it is, that given all the information in this thread, and in particular the first 1,000 posts, the ordinary Joe Soap of average intelligence, would simply want to wear a mask and not wait for orders from anywhere.

But then again this is Boards, where 2+2 = 5 and black is white in the eyes of some.

I'm not afraid of it, I know what precautions to take, the business is fully compliant with all guidelines. If I was over the HSE or Taoiseach it would have never made it to nursing homes, the government were completely asleep at the wheel, we saw this coming in January with stock shortages from China on what are usually free flow goods.
It's the people who aren't compliant and it's not my job to police them and it's not governments job to order us around like this, I was fully in favor of lockdown but we messed it up allowing the virus to be imported, were doing the same again now, absolutely farsical leadership.
It's a muzzle the same as they used to use on slaves, I'll follow the rest of the guidelines and do my best to avoid indoor spaces for more than 10/15 minutes but once a government try to exert such extreme control over my body they can go to hell.

Was it the government's job to ban smoking in shops and pubs as part of a public health measures?
If it was their job, it is their job to mandate mask wearing as a public health measure.
No maybe you think the science doesn't justify that, but it is a role of government to make such decisions.

So I don't understand this reaction at all.
During the lockdown there were serious restrictions on our liberties.
So to me, a mask is freedom - one of the avenues out of the restrictions and one of the defences against a return to them,
So I don't see wearing a mask as a restriction on my liberty.
It is risk of contracting the virus that restricts my actions, not wearing a mask as I go about my business in enclosed public places.
I am not a slave. Or a number. I am a free man. Or somesuch.
A mask does not compel me to execute another's will. It allows me to execute my own.

To me it's not freedom, it's government over reach as they won't make visitors quarantine.
Your no free man when your not allowed choose the air you breathe. It's your body your choice and don't give that ant man quote again.

I think seeing a mask as restriction on your freedom is pretty short sighted. Is it less of a restriction than lockdown? I would say so. In Taiwan and Japan they never had lockdowns but they all wear masks all the time. Must just be a coincidence I suppose.

    WTF.

    You mean Oxygen?

    What's the other choice?

You have no choice over whether the air you breathe has coronavirus in it if you are in an enclosed public space, anymore than you had a choice when it came to passive smoking.
If you can throw out loaded phrases like muzzle and slave I can quote anyone I want.

Oh, I must have missed the bit were we get special gas tanks stuck to our faces and made breath something against our own chosing.

Well, I do have asthma and when I tried to wear a mask several times, I found that I can't breathe after about 2 minutes.

Try to get used to it at home. Is it a surgical type mask?
There's a metal strip you need to form around the bridge of your nose.
Breathe though your nose not your mouth.
It can be tough going at first, but I found the above tricks made a big difference.

There's lots of testimonials online from people with asthma that they are wearing one and urging others to do so.

We had lockdown, Tony's plan was to get us to 0 the government decided against that and we're now heading back into phase 2 possibly.
There is no plan around masks, it's letting the government off the hook for a few months, more people will die with this policy.
The only game in town is border control, masks are nothing but window depressing.
As someone on the Frontline with the public right through this people are tired of this crap from the government, the key is border control the sooner the pro maskers wake up to this the sooner the government get pushed in the right direction.

Plus if you're asthmatic I imagine it's in your best interest to wear one when mingling with the public.

So many nonsensical cliches in this post, where do you even begin? You either believe our country is flooded with tourists bringing in the virus, or you believe there is no virus to catch. Some mental gymnastics to believe both.

Where did it come from, what were dealing with now is a direct result of importation through and after lockdown.

Ah, you want to lock the door now after the horse has bolted and gone to stud at this stage. Right so.

Lol, the chap says he can't breathe and you say get used to it. How about mandatory quarantine and he doesn't have to wear a mask.

Well, that's the advice from asthma societies too - most people with asthma can and should wear face coverings, and to "try a few different types to see if there is one that suits you, but if you feel breathless or suffocated while wearing a face covering, then don’t wear one."
It should probably be borne in mind that if the asthma is so severe you cannot wear a face covering, it may not be prudent to visit enclosed public places.
    https://www.asthma.org.uk/advice/triggers/coronavirus-covid-19/what-should-people-with-asthma-do-now/#Facemask

And you are proposing that wearing a mask is an assault on freedom but mandatory quarantine isn't?
If we're to have mandatory quarantine on visitors, presumably we would also have mandatory quarantine on any suspected close contacts of a infected case?
Think about what that would mean for people in customer facing roles.

What's the alternative, stop 40% spread of a highly infections disease or just stop it. I'm not a half pint person. Quarantine and be done with it, it's not to late to start.
It's going to happen and the quicker we do it the better.

You can not order people without virus into mandatory quarantine. Not yet, maybe when the law will change we can start herding people and shipping them somewhere.
I went through asthma society recommendation and tried several masks. For me it is simple. If I will not be allowed to go to the shop without one I will shop somewhere else. I do not fear to walk around without one and whoever feels that they will be safer by wearing one can certainly do so.

I'm seeing a lot of news articles and even shops saying its mandatory from Monday to wear a mask in a retail location. I can't for the life of me find any OFFICIAL announcement.

The virus is walking in through Dublin airport arrivals daily.

Put aside your differences fellow Irish men and women and tackle the problem at at hand. We may never be free of the virus otherwise

Was in Dunnes today and definitely a noticable difference in mask wearing today . Most people had some form of covering and most people trying their best to stay away from others
Maybe people needed a bit of a talking to and “ get a grip or else “ from NPHET
