Hi all,
Vanilla are planning an update to the site on April 24th (next Wednesday). It is a major PHP8 update which is expected to boost performance across the site. The site will be down from 7pm and it is expected to take about an hour to complete. We appreciate your patience during the update.

    why arent scanners being used? i know they arent 10005 accurate as not everyone who has cv19 has a temperature but wouldnt they catch a few ?

    By the time you have a temperature, you’re already quite sick. Of the 33 people I know who had Covid, none of them presented with a high temperature as the first symptom or as the only symptom.

    They would only be of use if there was an all Ireland approach to containment and we scanned everyone at ports and airports and refused anyone who failed.

    UCD gym has some kind of equipment set up by the building entrance. It's a new structure that looks like a stage set with cameras pointed towards the doorway, and a few feet away a new desk/station with a computer screen . There are already CCTV cameras in the area so I figured this might be a heat sensor camera. Anyone know anything about that, are thye being installed anywhere in Ireland?

    Looked into this option for my company. Lots of companies out there selling them but came to the conclusion that they are an expensive gimmick for companies to tick a box to say they are checking people. They don't work and I would say they are a scam but the manufacturers openly say you have to be indoors for up to 15-30 minutes to get an accurate reading not impacted by the cooling effect of wind etc on your face or the heat effect of brisk walking/cycling etc. Plus someone who wakes up and feels a little unwell can pop 2 paracetamol and mask the symptoms.

    In terms of the machines themselves there are cheap ones (i.e. 2000-3000 euro) that you can easily put beside a door. But the accuracy of those is a bit dubious plus the ones I saw required people to come uncomfortably close to the sensor. The more expensive ones are more accurate and say they detect temperature further away but you are talking about 15,000+ per machine to install and setup with a queue system etc.

    They are a very expensive public relations or staff relations initiative. If you are a company with money to spare by all means install them but take it out of your marketing budget.

    If you really want to be seen to do temperature checking then give the person standing on the door counting people in and out a €20 hand held scanner. It's far cheaper and probably just as accurate.
