    Yes: to protect others
I have a few reusable masks I bought in the shop and find them fine., I've also got some surgical ones in the car which I use if I've forgotten to bring along the washable ones. The only negative experience I've had with a mask so far is a reusable one I bought in Lidl. For some reason it made breathing a bit difficult so it got binned.

If you wash them I don't think they work out that much cheaper (the one I bought said to wash them no more than 5 times)

But I take your point about "other germs and bacteria " .

Can you buy more robust and effective masks that can be washed more than 5 times?

yep, I've bought plenty of cotton ones, can be rewashed indefinitely. Loads of places are selling them.

2 examples, this guy is a milliner in Mullingar and he's repurposed his business to make masts, can be bought from https://www.meddirect.ie/product/reusable-face-coverings/

And then I got some from these two leaving cert students who are donating half the proceeds to Alone:

You can also get reusable cotton ones that you can put filters in, if you want to ramp up the protective element, but in everday settings, the general cotton ones are fine to use

Covid-19 might die after 72 hours, but other germs and bacteria may not. This was one of the gov's initital fears and reluctance to endorse masks, that people wouldn't use thm properly and *other* diseases would come into play. Disposable masks should be disposed of, and not reused.

Plenty of cheap reusable cotton ones that are perfect for everyday use available, and you just throw them in the wash.

    No it wasn't.

GOV's initial fear was supply related and that fear lasted months. During that fear period they scare mongered the public about improper use to double protect supply. We are still paying the price for GOV's scaremongering with poor uptake due to beliefs formed during impressionable months.

GOV's reluctance to endorse masks had little to do with other diseases coming into play. Nothing about that on the GOV sites.

Disposable tissues should be disposed of and not reused but it's okay to walk around with your viral load on your sleeve for the day. GOV is up it's own ass.

Disposable masks do not need to be disposed of, and can be reused.

Not required if low risk. Excellent.

Latest from the Balearic Islands. After 45 days without any new cases Menorca had 4 yesterday. A tourist from the mainland.

    So...

"Compulsory from this weekend. From today’s paper:

The use of the mask will be mandatory in the Balearic Islands from this weekend. This will be determined by a resolution of the Govern that will be published in the BOIB this Friday or Saturday, in order to prevent the spread of the outbreak of the new coronavirus".

Great news. Hopefully it'll be enforced though.
Rules don't seem to suit the Irish.

I envisage people simply removing the mask and straight into handbags or pockets or people wearing them on the chin.

Bus drivers should be afforded the power to physically remove people who remove masks onboard.

About time but still sketchy on detail, should be €100 on the spot fine unless you have some medical reason not to wear one.

Michael Martin was dithering about it earlier.

Yeah, that's a class action suit right there and good luck on the Luas! Who collects the fine, do you imagine?

The title is a little misleading, they are compulsory on public transport only. Good new though.

Has anybody a link to the actual law?

I was interested to see how they would legally describe both the mask and correct usage.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 622 ✭✭✭sheepsh4gger

You shouldn't have 1 cloth mask but several. Otherwise you will just gather the virus on the surface which is worse than not wearing it. I would have one for each day of the week.

Not a law, regulations, and they will be signed tonight so expect more details over the weekend. By the sounds of it, it's just wear face coverings.

They have the authority to refuse people not wearing masks but their union has said they will not be policing it.

You're living in cloud cuckoo land if you think that's going to happen.

For the safety of their staff they’re dead right. I’m sure most of the drivers would prefer catch covid than catch a blade!

It would take some mercenaries for hire to be based on each Luas on the Red Line to clean it up.

Any driver who left their cab or even just shouted from their cab to solve a problem would get blamed by management.....so why would a driver bother? Management would throw them under the bus ;)

Dublin Bus by-laws do not even require a buggy to folded up if it means leaving a wheelchair user behind at a bus stop

Irish Rail cannot apply their own rules on disability access or their promises every summer on anti social behaviour

Some passengers will have face masks and some won’t and the driver will have nothing to do with it
At a guess the idea is probably to try to up the proportion of mask wearers on transport, especially if July 20 brings larger numbers of travellers.

Will there be people handing out masks at bus stops/train stations or luas stops?
The chemist beside me is selling disposable masks for €4.00 a go!
