Zero benefit to those commuters in Dublin you are so concerned about. Seems to me you're in support of roads spending regardless and against anything else outside of roads. Fair enough but at least be upfront.

If you want to make Dublin more attractive for cyclists you remove the cars. Invest in public transport. But you can only have so many buses for people so remove as many people commuting as possible.

Take athlone for example. Home to some multinational pharma companies. Why are they in Athlone? Theres a motorway beside it. You incentivise companies to set up outside the capital be it with tax breaks or whatever. They wont go anywhere unless there is infrastructure. A decent road network is paramount.

Get companies out of the capital. For a country as small as Ireland decentralisation is necessary.

1.8 billion on cycling infrastructure changes nothing. People still need to commute. Traffic doesn't change. Cyclists in Dublin are still running the gauntlet and its basically misery for everyone

Everybody lied. Everybody's manifesto was unicorns and rainbows. The world has changed utterly since the election. Martin is doing the right thing by going into government in a coalition that will bring the stability this country needs. Especially as Ireland deals with a pandemic, Brexit and an economic crash.
The agreement the parties have made, is to compound the economic crash with austerity in 2-2.5 years...

It seems Irish people get stuck on cars and anyone mentions an alternative you get a similar response to your one

Ireland transport system is not balanced, building another road won’t fix that, it will just compound the error

The 1.8 billion isn't for trains, buses or airplanes.

How the limerick to cork train line?

We don't have a direct cork to limerick rail line just so you know. We have a cork to limerick junction to limerick rail line.

SF promised to build 100,000 council houses over five years at a cost of 6.5 billion. Good intentions just like Martin's good intentions. Had they got into government, that wasn't going to happen. Especially after the pandemic. So that would have been a lie. See how it works?
Why on earth not? We can get the money for that now, at extremely low interest rates ffs - and the economic activity from that, grows our economy/GDP faster, back to a state of recovery - stabilizing Public Debt vs GDP much faster than not doing that...

The agreement is meaningless. We are economically screwed for years. Austerity won't be a choice as there won't be money to spend. It's about lashing yourself to the mast and hoping the ship doesn't go down.

    So?

You have a train which connects limerick and cork

    Is it over subscribed?

You have more than most of the country has

Build a motorway. When we do eventually transition to electric cars the infrastructure will be in place.

Also You burn less fuel cruising at speed than starting and stopping all of the time. Less emissions

The train from Cork to Limerick via Limerick junction is slower than the rubbish road connecting the two cities. It is not an attractive option at all.

Swapping two million combustion with two million Eletric cars is not the answer

Combustion engine cars will still be available to buy on second hand market till at least 2045

Spending 1.8 billion on bicycles is.

The car and the need for the car isn't going anywhere.
Building road network infrastructure is vital to an ever growing country

So, with Brexit looming, a probable resurgence in a pandemic, a climate crisis just around the corner and the worst global recession since WW2, we should borrow 6.5 billion to build 100,000 houses. Okay.

If you had ever even once driven from Limerick to Cork or vice versa you'd drop all arguments against the much needed M20. It should have been prioritised decades ago.

Sorry but anyone with a basic knowledge of climate change know electric cars are not the answer, they are part of the resolution but not the total solution

He hasn't been spectacular as Fianna Fáil Housing Spokesperson either. No housing policy produced in four years.

I have driven it, I have driven nearly every road in Ireland if not them all.

I have yet to get an answer on the limerick to cork train line?

Haven't seen any mention of where Simon Harris is going?

At a minimum looks like hes getting demoted as hes lost the health portfolio - will he be in the government at all?

What's your question on it? There is no Cork to Limerick rail line. There's a single tracked line to Limerick from Limerick junction on the Cork Dublin mainline.

You were just told, there is no train line from Limerick to Cork.

You have to go from Limerick to Limerick Junction (which happens to be be in a totally different county, Tipperary), then change trains to get another train to Cork. The train journey takes significantly longer than a journey by car.

That still doesnt deal with the issue of HGV's, containers or goods delivery.

Also there are absolutely ZERO commuter services on those rail lines. All services are inter city. Pretty pointless asking local people to use use trains when the only two towns between Limerick and Cork that are on those lines are Charleville and Mallow, and a lot of the existing trains services dont even stop at Charleville.

If you want a train service from Cork to Limerick that would carry commuters you are going to have to build a new rail line.

To be expected though. Fianna Fáil have hammered Fine Gael on housing and health, they can't exactly pass up on the opportunity to show leadership on those portfolios.

Delivering on those portfolios is Fianna Fáil's way back to gaining more support. It's make or break for them.
