I would have thought that the possibility of achieving "herd immunity" would be good for the whole world, not for some undefined group of people called the "herd immunity crowd".

I don't have an intellectual stake in a low death rate, I've just said that people shouldn't rush to give out figures of 0.5-1% as definitive when some scientists are estimating 0.2-0.3%. Maybe they are wrong, but please establish that beyond all doubt before tut-tutting.

And I think this is what many here are getting at in bemoaning bad news is that negativity bias and realism are being conflated at times. This feels intuitively wrong hence all the complaints.

Pretty good for a Tuesday in truth. Seems to have settled down at a certain point though.

    Correct.

It requires you to download "a participating app" from "your region's government health authority".

Relies on bluetooth and location settings being turned on (states that the system "does not collect or track your location".

Where is our app Ireland? I'd install it and use it immediately and would expect responsible fellow citizens to do likewise.
    Imminent!

    6 more deaths RIP
    5 new cases

Great figures regarding new cases. Think thats the first time we've had more deaths then new cases

Yeah hopefully they work that way. I’d be worried about when aircraft is taxiing and preparing departure / disembarking. I always get a very strong smell of fuel or burning. If these are so efficient how come I can smell this ? Also if someone passes wind on a plane (let’s face it we’ve all been there) The smelldoes tends to linger.

Now those examples are unpleasant. Covid is a different concern.

Thankfully the cases are still in single numbers at the moment

We must be the first country to report more deaths than cases.

    92% recovery rate again today, so (25,396 * 0.08 = 2,032 - 1,726 deaths) approximately 306 active cases:

I watch CNBC quite a bit, and they had one CEO on from Houston Texas who appears quite often on the channel. Classic US CEO type, usually very optimistic, bullish, possibly a Trump fan.

Today he was wearing a mask. Telling everyone to wear a mask. Threatening to throw people out of his restaurants and stores if they didn't wear a mask, and this is a Red state. Genuinely looking a bit scared. Texas is screwed looking at the rise in hospitalisations, and based on current projections it's very hard to see how they won't have to impose a state-wide lockdown.

Houston ICUs now at 97% capacity.

Yesterday they predicted 11 days before running out of beds, they don't have that. They are being overwhelmed.

There's a two row rule with catching and spreading infections on planes. If an infectious person coughs or sneeze, people two rows in front and two rows behind are more at risk.

It seems they are still 5ish a day.

I know ICUs are filling up but can they still treat people in other areas of the hospital. I would hate to see what happened to Italy and doctors choosing who to put on ventilators.

One thing I'd say about aircraft is remember the woman who had Covid who flew into Dublin from Italy and then onto Belfast? I don't remember hearing of any other passengers or crew on the flight getting it. Doesn't mean they didn't, maybe they had very mild doses, but maybe none of them did. Just one example but aircraft, so far, don't seem to be top of the list for vectors.

The deaths are reported and not necessarily current. There can be a lag.

Jesus. Its a sh*tshow in some of the Southern States. You would hope that come November they people of the US will see sense and cast Trump into the dustbin of History.

His handling of this has been appalling

There is still a whole lot to learn about just how infectious people are and why some infect a lot more than others. After 8 days of infection they say that you are no longer infectious.

He is going to stop federal funding for testing, so that will probably make it go away

It's literally no surprise whatsoever. I can't believe that I've been alive for five US presidents and a pandemic occurs when a man like Trump, by far and away the worst of them all, is in the chair.

ICUs are filling up but not with Covid patients. Normal hospital activity is resuming

Current reported deaths probably reflect infections from 1 to 2 months or so ago

In addition when numbers are so small there is little statistical relevance to daily differences. 17 deaths reported in the past 7 days is less than 3 a day, which is aroundish 40% less than "5ish" (and 5ish is 67%ish more than 3). Small numbers however you look at it

I'm not sure if this is anything to go by but there were nearly 5000 referrals yesterday, highest in a long time. Has mass testing restarted?
    https://www.hse.ie/eng/services/news/newsfeatures/covid19-updates/integrated-information-service-testing-and-contact-tracing-dashboard-24-june-2020.pdf

edit: the number of clusters has increased significantly, i suspect some cases in the last few days have a large amount of contacts

Just on my previous point, I think the testing criteria has changed again. A friend of mine was tested today because he had an ear infection. I reckon doctors are advising everyone to get tested as of this week.

I saw that people will have to get a test before going to hospitals for certain procedures. Was going to suggest it might be that but think lot of services aren't resuming until next month at earliest so probably a bit early.

I reckon this has started now with doctors. Since Monday the referrals have gone up, it makes sense to make use of the capacity.
