All I have left to say is RIP Colm. You were so loved. Gone far too soon.

A friend of mine who is in the Armed Response Unit told me the guy who did it has "genuine mental health issues".

Garda numbers in rural Ireland are at skeletal levels since Alan Shatter closed many garda stations and gave early retirement to many guards.

Towns that had 12 guards when there was minimal crime in the 80s and 90s now have no guard or station despite crime going through the roof with traveller gangs robbing all round them and dealing drugs.

This x20 - towns are ruined with this form of crime. And the knock on effects swindle down to the young 16/17 year old who’s naive and seeing others doing narcotics and sampling them. That is what is happening in my towns secondary school.

RIP to Det. Horkan absolutely shocking. People can speculate on the scenario but at the end of the day a man lost his life, my heart goes out to his poor father.

Are you speaking for the Gardai here, are you a Guard? If you're not then it's just your opinion and you pipe down.

There was Gardai in a station 5 minutes walk from this incident, but you and the other knowitalls will say they've got their own work etc. Well they do, but if they want to ensure a Guard, detective or not, is not alone then they can make changes that one of those Guards in the station could be available as back up.

Clear agenda in your posts. Rural policing dynamics are different. Policing Castlerea (up until the other night anyway) or any other rural town is not the same as policing North Strand.

Sure there has been immense cutbacks and recruitment freezes in the force since the late 2000s financial crisis.

    Please, people..

Give this mental health nonsense a rest.

The act was an act of cold blooded wickedness...

Pure pure bad....whatever state of mind he was in, just make sure he never ever sets foot out of jail again..

Failure of our mental health services?

An insult to the many many many people doing so much great work to help people in trouble.

And then some nasty wicked person goes and kills, and it’s straight to the blaming others...pathetic.

People kill and hurt and maim. No matter what other people do to try and stop it.

Not nonsense in this case as the victim had years of serious mental health issues. The mental health services still need to greatly improve in this country.

RIP to Garda Horkan a totally avoidable death on many counts

I think we all figured this out already.

I can say categorically that gardai have very little training in how to deal with mental health issues and in cases I know of have subjected people with mental health issues to unfair procedure and it takes intervention at a supt level to correct the problem.

It really is this simple - hold off judgement and let the experts decide whether it was a mental illness issue or not.

But some posters just can't do it. They have to, have to, take a position one way or the other.

Problem with ‘mental health’ is its used as a hall pass if you will to facilitate, excuse and enable this sort of incident... or any situation where somebody acts inappropriately... be it a crime, personal issue or otherwise...it IS a cop out, a cop out that’s becoming increasingly more prevalent among these ‘advocates’ for mental health. Which they are not... they are simply advocates for people acting criminally, dangerously and these fûcking arsewipes are causing more harm in society than help...

If somebody DID have an issue that led to this incident what the fûck are they doing...

    1. Out in public

    2. Drinking alcohol

Q the ‘advocates’...” well it’s imperative for their mental health to meet up and socialize, nope don’t care about distancing, nope, Garda should have minded their own business, nope nope... mental health mental health”...

if you want to give it the big "mental health issues" sadface

then what dyou propose be done to keep people safe from all the fellas with "mental health issues"

if behaviour presents as unsafe or violent to society, throwing a category on it changes nothing.

priority 1: the good of the community

priority 2: dealing with a problem individual's "issues"

Yeh, but you can bet for any previous convictions, sure didn’t the owl mental health flare up?

Seriously, I actually don’t give a toss whatever the reason he did it. I’ll deal with facts. One man destroyed another man with a firearm. Snuffed him out...they can debate and argue and ponce around till the cows come home to find out why...

Once the man is kept locked away from society for life....result!

Nothing showing up for anything. Usually Google will give something in a local paper.

Personally, whilst no garda should ever be harmed in line of duty, questions must be asked about the garda's action.

Why did he stop silver, why was there a struggle. Was this preventable.

It says that the Gardai knew of silver. So should have known any issues he had (if he had) and treated him relevant to those issues.

But as I said, gardai and mental health are not compatible as they have little understanding, and less training about it.

He stopped him likely because he was acting suspicious.

And even if he wasn’t suspicious, does it really matter?

A detective engaged a member of the public. And for that he was butchered..

Not sure what it has to do with Gardaí and their mental health awareness!

He can only treat him relevant to the actual law. If he believed Silver was breaking it the Garda doesn’t have leeway or the ability to walk on by, “ ahhh sure the fella is a bit of a header “ Even more reason to contact him.... look what he was capable of for fûcks sake !

He was apparently arrested the week before this happened. Also, another guy might have been with him on Wednesday night but he legged it.

This guy is also a dangerous individual.

Why has there been no extensive coverage forbid tragedy? When Adrian Donohue was killed it was in the news constantly for several days and also made international news. This incident hasn't. Why?

RTÉ top story tonight was about Leo's speech and the easing of the restrictions that should've been done last month when transmission ended in the community. What does that tell you?

Covid is still big big news...

Has the other guy been identified to eliminate him from the enquiry?

I don't know, but if he was there it's likely,
The two of them are friends for years. Both would be known to the police.
