69 cases this week. By Sunday it could be the first week to have cases under 100 since March 2nd to 8th.

This whole virus has me confused. Probably around since December. I'd like to think that most of us caught it already without knowing, but then there's still cases every day.

Wasn't easy, as expected back in March with measures in place it would take months to contain the virus on this island.

It's all relative - it's not an easy process but it's easier in a small country, reasonably isolated as an island, with the correct measures in place.

A lot of countries either have not done that or allowed early 'openings' when there was hardly a 'lock down' in the first place.

Failte Ireland go to the HPSC, they give the guidelines based off the NPHET guidelines. Its a bit backwards really but nothing new there.

The time limit thing is laughable. The incentive for punter and publican are aligned and not in a good way.

    On your marks.....
    Get set......
    Go!!.....

    What could possibly go wrong?

As for Are Lingus they certainly aren't wasting this crisis. Given we have the most expensive face masks in the world because they flew 1st class. What about the poor container ship operators. It's ironic that the Beijing flights while very useful at the start were affectively an attempt to 'mask' illegal state aid which is under EU competition law. A much more economic smelly ship wouldn't be so nice.

Why. don't they issue a bond. ECB will buy it at nominal interest. Government is paying the wages anyway. Feel for the workers.

Deputy Smith added that the State is currently paying a large portion of the airlines wage bill under the Wage Subsidy Scheme and she called on the Government to demand the airline stop its present plans.

She said: “The airline’s treatment of workers is a scandal and will set a precedent for other employers.

"It’s a cynical use of the crisis to implement draconian measures.
This airline was making huge profits prior to the crisis but now wants to tear up agreements and discard the workers who made these profits.”

Say what you want about the Chinese but at least they put boots on the ground and take the measures needed to try and halt transmission.
    Freedom is expensive.

China can do these things because its citizens effectively have no rights and can be steamrolled "for the greater good" at any point.

It's no use looking misty-eyed at the Chinese response unless you're willing to say you'd be happy to yield all of your human rights to the Government for the rest of your life in return for a faster pandemic response.

It's not that supermarkets are a death trap however they are an enclosed space so it allows the virus to spread more freely.

You also must remember than most supermarket workers are young so that is probably why they have not dropped dead in their 10's of thousands

Whilst wondering why, regardless of age, why only 0.3% of Lidl supermarket staff caught the virus according to their figures.

Studies in Italy from waste water samples show that Coronavirus was in Milan and Turin in December.

The behaviour of the Chinese is akin to watching the arsonist put out the fire they started. Hardly worthy of praise?

The WHO director has warned that the global outbreak is accelerating and expressed increasing alarm at the situation in Latin America in particular which is completely out of control according to them.

In the states...two records so far today

Florida endures yet another daily record in a row. 3,877 new cases vs 3,207 yesterday.

Maybe it's time for people's anger to start being targeted at those places and countries around the world who have failed to control outbreaks and put everyone else at risk as a result.

Any reason you seem more interested in worldwide cases rather than Ieland? You seem to have lost interest in talking about the situation here in the last few weeks.

Wadacrack, next you'll be making the outrageous implication that Kermit likes negative news!

Data was analysed from last year, we know that it wasn't around in any significant numbers, and that the wave of illness last November/December was definitely influenza.

Italy today confirmed from sewage samples that it was there in December, so I wonder if we have similar samples we can use to test.

It may well have been here at the time, but the chances that we have all caught it without knowing about it are very slim.

Aerlingus to cut 500 jobs due to the continuing restrictions

The airline said the situation in Ireland is “exacerbated” by the 14-day quarantine requirement for arriving passengers and travel advice against all non-essential travel
    https://amp.independent.ie/business/jobs/aer-lingus-set-to-cut-up-to-500-jobs-39299664.html?__twitter_impression=true

how exactly is this filling out a form when you get off a plane thats already flown you into Ireland that in no way shape or form does anyone actually have to stick to affect Aer Lingus or any other Airline that they have to let people go.

It's quite simple any perspective tourist thinking of travelling to Ireland reads online that upon entering Ireland you are subject to 14 days self isolation this is what stands out for said tourist and makes them consider other destinations. The fact that the only thing mandatory by way of a fine is the filling out of the form.

There is every opportunity to scrap the quarantine for countries at or in excess of our progress with the virus in Europe today.

Not doing so is just needless damage now.

They need to decide which countries they are and act on it.

They are talking complete pony, the reality is not enough people will want to fly to make it sustainable so they are lashing out and blaming who they can.

The reality is, we have all ready seen this movie.

The virus didn't swim to the island, it got in via international travel and it's exactly how it will return, it's all ready happening.

Air France to recommence Cork - Paris CDG services from 1st July

    https://www.irishexaminer.com/breakingnews/business/air-france-to-resume-flights-from-cork-1006160.html

Seems some degree of return to normality.

Good but as long as the quarantine is in place it's fairly pointless.

They should remove quarantine for specific low risk countries in Europe. No reason not to at this stage.

Unless Gouv.fr has heads up on that happening by July 1st? Or, Air France is just chancing on the fact that it probably will.

My local lidl put up the glass screens at the very beginning and I often see the staff wear masks.

Also another thing to consider is that a lot of young healthy people who catch covid-19 are asymptomatic, so it is possible that a lot got it without even knowing.

    I'd like to think so.

We can't go on like this.

Other countries have contained this virus and we should be able to open to them having contained it ourselves.

Possibly could be included in the announcements today.

At the moment our biggest risk is not EU travel. It could well be from US tourism and business travel though.

The U.K. is risky, but bad as it is, it seems to be more likely to eventually get it under control as there’s a lot of pragmatism once you get away from the spin prone layer in the government itself. I don’t get the impression the British public is the problem. Rather it’s a government that tries to solve everything by spin and optimistic talk without any substance to it.

A large part of the US, however, is off in absolute la la land and risks a major problem later this year and a lot of that is driven by public attitudes to this.

Hopefully we get to a stage where rapid, reliable, non lab testing could open up travel more widely and without risk.

Fair point. Though I still believe that if asymptomatic transmission was going on to any extent in supermarkets, we could never have reached close to zero transmission at this point, given that supermarkets have been open all along this crisis and been full of shoppers.
