i think its fairly safe to say that this is the worst year in the last 100 or so.

what years should make up the top 5

You've obviously never heard of Nazi Germany.

It's all relative OP. South Korea has a population of over 53 million. 277 reported deaths from covid. It's possible more people died from parachute accidents/sheep-shagging/etc this year .
So the Koreans are laughing at you straight away.....I can't be arsed to search the Globe for more comparisons, but sure, you get the idea.

Just give up and go quietly like me. Obvious troll is the OP.

    I think it's quite clear he's serious.

When epidemics and crackpot governments happen in the 3rd world: Yawn, change the channel.

When epidemics and crackpot governments happen in the 1st world: OH MI GAWD, THE WORLD IS GOING TO BURN.

Let's not go too hard on the hyperbole - there'll be a 2021, unless the nukes start flying or a great big mountain-sized asteroid hits us directly.

I wouldn't even mind, but in the 3rd world, the crackpot leaders are proper - wielding gold AK-47s and keeping a harem of concubines, and their diseases are a shade worse, too, like hemorrhagic fevers and such.

So...you're saying that North Korea is worse this year than last year (or the previous year, and so on) ?

Why is china worse now than 5/10/20 years ago ?
"Some of the Middle East" ? Because the Middle East was flying it up until January ?

I remember the year after we did the Junior Cert, near the end of the year we had assembly, and the Principal stood up in front of us all and said we were the second worst fifth-years he ever had the misfortune of meeting....

This is after giving me such a fit of laughing!

Thierville in Upper Normandy was the only village in all of France with no men lost from World War I

Only 32% of Males born in the Soviet Union in 1923 were still alive when WWII ended.

Global population in 1900 was about 1,600 million people. Compare that to between 300-500 million deaths by smallpox since.
    ZERO deaths since 1978 though.

During a time frame similar to the current lockdown, in Rwanda, a country a third the size of Ireland, a million people were slaughtered.

Vietnam was invaded by the Japanese in 1940 and was then almost continuously at war with Japan, France, USA, Australia, South Korea, Cambodia and/or China until 1979

Six million people died in the Second Congo War.

There were reports of people starving to death during the economic war between us and the UK in the 1930's

Asbestos, lead in petrol, DDT, Polio, TB

We don't practice duck and cover.

1941-1946 was extremely grim for Jewish people. 2001 was horrendous too for obvious reasons. And the entire 70s, 80s and 90s were a literal warzone for people in Northern Ireland where thousands of people lost their lives during the Troubles. A global pandemic is bad but doesnt compare to horrors of the past.

If I'm interpreting op's history lesson correctly, in 2020 the death count may be low compared to other events but the fear of death is incredibly high

The generally accepted timeframe of the Cold War is 1947 to 1991, a period of 44 years where there was a very real threat of all out nuclear war

I rank 2020 45th out of the last 100 using those criteria

    You're welcome op :)

    i disagree entirely.
yes they were terrible years for some but they had no effect on most of africa, south america, most of asia etc.

this virus is effecting most of the world medically and economically

    What age are you?

    Serious question.

    Ms

I think you got your answer OP.
Clearly the biggest threats to you this year are Gemma ODoherty banning Unicorns, No being able to attend University on Campus and over grown hair.

You are in for a rough life next year when the stock market crashes and Trump wins the American elections this October and is sworn in afterwards. I would keep my powder dry until then.
Lol. Not going to happen Joe Biden is going to win the election this time and become President of the United States and we can all the forget about the fake President of the last 4 years. The one who accomplished nothing except for dividing a nation. He has had two disasters in the last 6 months and they will be the reason he will lose. If the Americans vote him in again then they might as well nuke themselves because it would only get worse for them.

    Live long and Prosper

    Peace and long life.

in lots of ways this year is the worst for the everyday person on the ground that is in fear of their lives just wlking down the street from an unstopable and invisable enemy.
    You're funny.

I guess it all depends on the 'worst scale' including context. Six million Jews died in the Holocaust, so that was pretty grim for them, then you mention the NI Troubles which was also pretty grim for them (on a smaller scale), you then mention the current pandemic which has been pretty grim for the entire planet!

Not sure if the OP means local worst or Worldwide worst?

my point is that there are huge areas that have very little effect on

the people on the ground had a relatively normal existence

Are you Donald Trump? Your cognitive dissonance knows no bounds.

It is not a local worst either.

Russians were worse affected by WW2 than Jews btw.

I've had a great couple of months and don't know anyone having a hard time tbh. There have been some inconveniences alright, and I'm sure many have had a rough time but I can only speak from my own experiences.
It's hardly the siege of Münster in Dublin ffs.
