That's the biggest clearout in a very long time

In fairness we lose about 10 players most seasons

I think hes right though as regards first teamers, the lads there must have had close to 100 starts between them last year

That is a big clear out. Best of luck to all of them and hopefully they all find clubs to go to. Wouldn't be surprised to see Niyi going to France.
Very short in the back 3 and back row now. Cant see any signings from abroad now so hopefully there are a few loan deals from the other provinces.

If it's really 12 out 4 in even with academy promotions it's hard to call the squad anything but too small. It was already very stretched last year, and it could leave us in a very bad way if we don't have more bodies coming in.

Best of luck to all those leaving, some great servants in there.

That’s 35 players excluding academy? Need at least seven players in, hard to see where they are going to come from.

This season wasn’t bad but it wasn’t good either, especially away capitulations, next season (or end of this season etc) could be grim.

  • Registered Users Posts: 1,917 ✭✭✭realhorrorshow

    Potential academy entrants:

    Charlie Ward (prop)(u21)
    Eoin deBuitlear (hooker)(u20)
    Kolo Kiripati (hooker)(u19)
    Darragh Murray (lock)(u20)
    Cian Prendergast (lock/back row)(u21)
    Lucas Culliton (back row)(u21)
    Donnacha Byrne (back row)(u20)
    Kacper Palamarzuck (back row)(u19)
    Diarmuid McCormack (back row)(u20)
    Cathal Forde (out half/centre)(u20)
    Diarmuid Kilgallen (centre/wing)(u21)

Diarmuid Kilcommins would be in the mix also but he's focusing on hurling I think.

Hugh lane, Luke Carty, Mikey Wilson are all released. Some additional players from Leinster and elsewhere from this years Irish 20s joining the academy

Loosehead, lock, and back row depth particularly concerning as it stands.

Any idea where Niyi is off to? He hadn't really gotten back to the levels of 2016 and I know he was struggling with injuries but at 29 you'd think there still would've been a fair push to keep him.

Thought he was worth a new contract. He hasn't really lost any speed when he's fit. Granted missed a lot of games last season.

Some clear out. I would seriously worry about our ability to be competitive next season. Whatever form it takes. Those interprovincial games in late August might not be pretty.

Worth noting we'll have a large group of year 3 academy players next season who could/should pick up some of the slack.

It doesn’t really, unless it’s one game per month or something crazy, the current squad is simply too small.

Had heard niyi was going to France but no idea what the story is now. Would be happy if Darren O Shea, wootton and another back row were signed up. Can see the academy taking the rest of the spots

I’ve heard Dan Goggin might be heading west. From a friend of a friend etc so pinch of salt. Centre would be strange given where needs lie.

I find it hard to believe so many would be released with no contingency plans in place

Goggin is signed up at Munster until 2022 and has made 25 starts in the last two seasons. I'd be shocked if he left along with Arnold, who only made 14 starts in the same period.

If you want available Munster players: Jack Stafford is a 9 and Alan Tynan is a 10/15 who are likely to be released after their academy stints ended.

We are well stacked at centre so its doubtful. Stafford and Tynan would fill a gap but better quality/experienced players are needed.

I suppose we would have to ask him first :)

Now that Fergus McF has announced his retirement and no confirmation otherwise from Rob K, Byrne might feel he has an opportunity for more game time with Leinster.

You just want to keep your player. As usual
Byrne is 26 even starting 6 games won't be enough, if he prioritise rugby, which is not sure, he shoud try to be 1st choice, and could in Connacht (Healy not young)

Fairly sure testech is Connacht supporter. Regardless the poster is right about asking them. Some guys prioritise different things being close to family/friends, staying in Dublin, etc

Don’t get me wrong I think for the sake of his rugby Adam Byrne should move but some players are happy being a small fish in a big pond.

Testech is a Connacht supporter not sure how you think he wants Leinster to keep their players as usual.
