Having purchased a de Longi bean to cup last Sept - the ESAM 4200.S, Silver
I've realised i don't drink milky coffees anymore, this is one of the reasons i bought this bad boy, but its just a simple shot or 2 of espresso into a nice cup and add some boiling water that's working for me currently -

I know this is the entry level but I want to go to the next sage on a budget.

Ill prob sell the deLongi here or on adverts and then what should i be looking for.

Will i need to go grinder and a separate unit for coffee extraction or is there something anyone here would recommend that does just this.

I understand the key here is prob a decent grinder - should this be the priority?
Or is there a unit that offer grinding and extraction alone.
No need for a milk frother.

Which direction would be best? Anyone help?

gives me a budget of 250 - 300 roughly

IMO buying another machine to make only Americanos makes little sense. Hario V60 filtered coffee is similar to Americano, but better. And then a good grinder, can be manual too, as grinding for filter is a breeze on those and they have close to zero retention. If you prefer electric Wilfa get good reviews for filter grind.

If you don't drink milk based coffees the don't waste your money on an espresso machine. A good burr grinder, frenck press and aeropress is where its at.

my preference is the simplicity and easy bean 2 cup option but i want to move on

I got the Smart Grinder Pro, which is the same but newer and digital controls as well as hardware updates, for €160... That deal is over, but if you Hunt around you can find for a reasonable price (with 3 pin plug, if you are in Ireland)

I've been thinking of trying pourover tbh myself. The Wilfa Svart grinder seems well regarding at around €120-30 and then a V60 and some filters maybe.

Utter madness buying an espresso machine if all you want is an americano.

As others have said. Good grinder plus aeropress. Done.

I wouldn't necessarily say it's madness to get an espresso machine just for black coffee, it's more you might want to change what kind of machine to look for.

There are manual espresso machines such as the ROK espresso maker, Cafelat Robot and Flair which can make fantastic espresso without steam and extra features.

OP, it's up to you want you want to shoot for next. If you're specifically only going to drink black coffees and you enjoy the taste of espresso, it might be worth looking into machines such as the above which offer a great experience and novelty appeal. It might also be worth buying something like an Aeropress or Moka Pot to see how you find the flavour - you may end up getting as much enjoyment out of the taste of these cheaper devices.

A good grinder will never do by you wrong in either circumstance.

Highly recommend the Wilfa grinder. Got mine in Coffee Angel last year & use it daily. Usually Aeropress topped up with a little hot water if drinking it black or else use filter cone.

just thinking about my OP - i do like the odd shot of espresso too so i'm kinda leaning towards an espresso machine. I''m also liking the "automated" easiness of it all so i might stick along the B2C options,

For black coffee:

French Press / Aeropress >>>>>> Americano

The odd shot of espresso wouldn't offset that imbalance for me even slightly.

If you're enjoying what you're getting from the B2C I personally wouldn't bother with getting rid, an espresso machine and a grinder will set you back the guts of 3-400 quid at least and you might not find the results to he that big of a jump.

A decent hand grinder and an Aeropress or the likes of a V60 for a change of pace would be my recommendation, should only set you back around 80 quid. It'll be a different type of black coffee for sure, but personally much prefer it to an Americano or a long black.

Thanks for all the chat and advice guys.

Thinking long and hard about it, its def the easiness of dropping in some beans and pressing a buttton. that's it, real simple.
- the part i appreciate most - first thing every morning and again later in the day.
Its the button.
I have had V60 and aeropresss on a few occasions but don't have the patience for them, not for me.

Ill stick with what i have or consider an upgrade as it is the entry level machine I have.
