Yes definitely considering something smaller and more nimble in petrol form next time. As much fun and entertaining as the i30n would be I don't think I could live with that interior. 20 years ago I wouldn't have cared. BTW I just checked insurance on that blue 440i and it's coming in at around 650 which is cheaper than what I'm paying on the 530d.

Whilst I haven't driven one, if in the market for a new hatch I'd certainly consider one based on the very positive reviews from credible enthusiast journalists.

I've never been a fan of Hyundai and don't like their styling and interiors, but this car has been developed by the man responsible for icons like the E46 M3 and E39 M5. That's helping me get over my Hyundai prejudice.

MarkN did a review of one

R or GTI are probably safer bets though, stage 1 on a GTI will take it up R power without the extra weight and it's a lot cheaper.

The thing with a hot hatch though is that 90% of the time you’re driving in traffic, commuting etc. And 10% of the time you’re on a road where you can have fun.
Great and all as the Hyundai is you’re in a relatively low rent interior all the time. You don’t really appreciate the handling and Exhaust noise sitting in traffic!
The mark 7 golf gti has just a few nice exterior and interior touches that lift it above the norm and it would probably get my vote too over the Hyundai.
Also manual gearbox is a deal breaker for me now.

I m surprised nobody has bought that 440i in Waterford
    Ticks a lot of boxes.

    Makes sense.
You looked at any Porsche’s yet?

When you say manual is a deal breaker do you mean you would only buy an automatic? I have a manual Golf R and i love it, much more involving but I do very little town or urban driving so it suits my driving style. On the motorway or N roads just stick it in 6th with ACC on and it'll do its thing, its almost as good as an auto in my eyes.

I'd agree with hooch, manual as well only downside was I had to replace the clutch to handle the torque when tuning it.
Think the 911 is gone out the window, doing up a 70's kombi at the moment and painting is starting soon (I need to pick a color and the decision is melting my brain), it's going to get expensive very quick.
Might nurse on the gti another while and wait for the panamera sport turismo to come down in price.

A clutch in a manual is a lot cheaper than a DSG box if it goes wrong

I found nothing about a 2019 GTi upmarket TBH.... That said I don't like Hyundai interiors as they are a bit mark 1 focus ish or something. That i30 interior I'd be OK with though.

I did likewise on an m3 recently too and it was only €30 more than the 535d, around €580.

I'm very surprised about that 440i also. It's been for sale a long time now. Once the restrictions are lifted I'll be down in Waterford visiting family so will take it for a test drive if it's still available. That colour is not my favourite though, by a long way. Looks lovely in photos but in the metal it's actually more green/turquoise in sunlight.

Yeah they have since about July/August last year but the price hasn't dropped by all that much since then, it certainly hasn't budged much since the turn of the year but I've seen main dealers sit on high priced stock for long lengths of time rather than reduce to shift them faster. Will be interesting to see what sort of money they will want with your own for it as I cannot imagine the phone is hopping with inquiries for it. I like the colour as it's rare in them but it definitely stands out and has presence. Could be a PITA to keep scratches or stone chips hidden though especially with our roads.

I watching these reviews of the 440i earlier that had notions being put in my head:

I reckon they'll be looking for around 24-25k with my own, although that dealer in particular is not known for their good trade in offers. I was interested in an F11 520d that they had in stock a few years ago and they low balled me big time on my E61 compared to other dealer offers.

I'm not sure how accurate carzone valuation is but according to that my car is €23,000. That's not taking spec into account and there is a 2014 one for €27,000 in Adrian Quinns. I guess it's all about taking the best offer available and knowing when to walk away.

Edit: I watched most of those too :pac:

I just prefer auto over manual.
Bought my gti in manual to supposedly have more driver involvement but found that after a few weeks I wished I had the convenience of an auto.
Don’t think I would go back now except for a weekend fun car.

It was 55/56k when I called up about it last summer, I had a 171 520d touring at the time which was well specced, M-sport plus, tech pack, vis pack, comfort pack and pano sunroof. They were saying about 15k to change with my own which I was surprised about to be honest, was a better offer by about 5k than I had been expecting.

Here is a 171 530d xdrive "highest spec in Ireland" for 40k now, would be decent value I think, although I don't like the black alloys on her.

That black 530 has been for sale for over 6 months now.

That 530d has been for sale for an age at that price for ages with one dodgy picture and sketchy description. Something not right I think.

I watched those 440i videos from Joe Achilles again. I love the grey. I think JoeA3 on here has his 4 gc in that colour.
A lot to love about the car. Only the dated interior puts me off but maybe the digital cockpit and the merino leather would be enough to bring it up above the norm.

Have a Model 3 booked in with Tesla Ireland shortly so I'll see if I end up wanting one :D

    Here's how they're doing test drives now in Ireland;

For those wanting to test drive, we can use the connected nature of our cars to provide you with an independent experience. Organise a touchless test drive, do the ‘paperwork’ in advance over email, come to a Tesla location and we’ll unlock the car for you. At this point, you will find a readily clean car to use for your test drive and a video tutorial on screen to enhance your experience. Simply return when you have finished. All help can be given over the phone and, if you want to, an order can be placed online at your leisure.

Secondly, as you would expect the delivery process is led by tech. To take delivery of your car with a touchless experience, all ‘paperwork’ is pre organised in your Tesla account online. On the day, simply sign an iPad, login to the Tesla App on your phone and make your way to your car. Inspect your car independently and then take advantage of the video tutorials on screen in your car before getting on your way.

    What model are you testing?
Is this a journalist test or one you booked as a private customer?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 28,135 ✭✭✭✭drunkmonkey

Look for the faults you'll find them, brother in law got his during the week, the passenger door card looked like it was cut out by by a 4yr old with a blunt scissors, the wrap around back lights are way out of line. The petrol cap or what ever it's called is visibly pretruding out. He didn't want the kids opening the doors outside for fear they'd brake off the plastic door handles.
He loves it, I thought it was shoddy for such an expensive car, I didn't say a word to him but I'd definitely be concerned about quality when a car is delivered with visible defects.
Must take a picture of the door card and how bad it's finished.

They approached me so offered the car for a couple of days but I'll film the bits of getting the car with a contactless approach so highlight what they can do.

You must be doing good numbers if you have manufacturers now approaching you!

It was just from the person I’ve dealt with before so I think it was just a case of here’s how we’re doing things now, might be a good video. I don’t think I have that level of influence to be fair but it’s nice to be asked :)

I found this Auto topNL video of 440i GC albeit with x drive.
He is very impressed by it.

That interior colour combo really lifts the car compared to all black. I've seen a good few state the digital dash is quiet poor in them.

I'd prefer the standard dials all day long, less to go wrong and easier to read, even if it looks a bit dated by modern standards.

Insane they are still fitting manual handbrakes to this level of car, looks so ugly and out of place when you get used to not seeing them in loads of normal cars nowadays (and of course much nicer to use).
