Did they take any measures to protect the old people and the ill? No. So they will have a few weeks of hight death rates amount certain groups of people and then it's finito.

We have enough time behind us to see a trend happening. But for some reason many chose not to notice

The only countries with evidence of sustained significant fall in deaths so far are those that imposed strong restrictions. May change over the next few weeks

This is worrying. Probably explains rationale of slow phased relaxation of lockdown.

ICU numbers down to 49 from 55, and a sharp drop of hospitalised numbers to 313 from 364 the day before.

Denmark are 4 weeks out of lockdown without any spread of the virus.

It’s a bit of a gloomy outlook and I hope they’re beyond it, but I’m wondering if it was in France in November/December and took a while to “blow up” could we be seeing similar now in Denmark? It’s circulating quietly maybe and will build up again. Hopefully not tho. /doom.

Yes, and it was lockdown that caused the drop, and social distancing that maintained it. Have you an example of a country that significantly reduced deaths without significant restrictions?

Why is our death rate so high in comparison to other similar sized countries and greater?

    Ireland pop : 5m, deaths : 1571
    Norway pop: 5.5m, deaths : 234
    Finland pop : 5.5m, deaths : 304
    Slovakia pop : 5.5m, deaths : 28
    Singapore pop : 5.8m, deaths : 22
    Bulgaria pop : 7m, deaths : 120
    Israel pop : 8.6m, deaths : 279
    Serbia pop : 8.7m, deaths : 235
    Austria pop : 9m, deaths : 633
    Belarus pop : 9.5m, deaths : 179
    Hungary pop : 9.6m, deaths : 473
    Portugal pop : 10.2m, deaths : 1263
    Greece pop : 10.5m, deaths : 166
    Czech pop : 10.6m, deaths : 304
    Romania pop : 19m, deaths : 1147
    Australia pop : 25m, deaths : 100
    Poland pop : 37m, deaths : 962
    Ukraine pop : 43m, deaths : 564

The ski trips were a huge factor. None of the above countries had thousands of people all returning from what was a major epicentre for the virus at that time.

We have a much larger pig headed selfish element than most of those countries.

Sure we have people in this forum bragging about defying the restrictions put in place to save lives.

    HSE Operations report issued

As of 8pm last night 49 patients in ICU with confirmed covid

Likewise as of 8pm 313 confimed covid patients in acute hospitals, down from 364 24hrs previous. Biggest 24hr drop that I can remember from looking at these reports recently.

Very sharp drop, the most I can recall in one day period. Let's hope the trend continues today.

8500 deaths,, isn't that the same surgesas other large countries over these past few months. The numbers will tapper off in a few weeks. And let's not forget the details of who is effected by this

Yes, lets not forget. So why have almost 20,000 suddenly died in a country as young as Brazil?

Sweden. 3800 deaths with double the population.
Logic is escaping so many. Keep the old and ill protected. That's all we can do against this there is no alternative and no new normal without blood shed anyway.

The Tony cmo chap was talking about a kawasaki disease spike linked to c19. The foundation responsible for monitoring that disease stated there is no spike in cases this year. No proper journalism in Ireland, no true press. And a stand in government more concerned about their future performance.

    What's the population of Brazil?

One of those countries was a major epicentre for the spread of the virus and after Italy and UK, probably the third highest source of infections into Ireland

What an idiot. If France had a case in December, this virus could have started anywhere.

True. But let's just assume (and we're not certain) that this started in China. What Trump (and Boris, Bolsonaro and many others) did or didn't do isn't China's fault at all. They are responsible for what's been happening to their people (and to those who are infected by them).

They did say that covid could cause brain damage... it would seem that more people than previously thought have been infected, by the look of that. ^^^

It seems like Ireland should speed up its opening as it looks like countries that are ahead of us havnt seen their ICUs start to fill up again.

Excellent point, really refuted my argument.
All scientific trials assessing hydroxychloroquine in treatment of Covid-19 have failed. A hypothesis was formed, astudies designed, and the hypothesis rejected.
They are now trailing the use of the drug in preventing infection. A hypothesis was formed, and study designed, and trial started. If it is successful great. But is only a hypothesis as yet

Sorry explain what? Yes, Brazil has a very large population, which makes it even more shocking that COVID is the leading cause of death there now. But it only affects people in nursing homes, right?

We'll still have to get through all of Phase 1 first. After that we'll see.

I am thinking and it is only my opinion, that we went about handling this all wrong.

Firstly the early stages of how it was handled in the country was really bad. The people in charge didn't really know what they were doing, look at the nursing homes and how we cancelled a rugby match, but let the Italian fans come unscreened or quarantined and many more similar mistakes.

Secondly, we were told this virus was dangerous for people who were older and for people with underlying health conditions.
Given the lockdown was for everyone, maybe people under 55 years of age who have no health issues should have been allowed to go on living as normal ONCE they were not looking after or living with elderly or the people with compromised health.
I don't think our outcome would have been any worse in terms of lives lost, maybe better as it would have been focused better, and we would not have cost the country quite as much money as we have.

The people looking after and dealing with the sick from this virus have done great, the people dealing with this crisis I think have done a poor job

Any evidence of a significant fall in deaths in Sweden? Only a couple of weeks ago their death rate was behind ours, now its motoring ahead

Good news. Slightly concerning that there has been an increase in admissions over the last few days, but hopefully it's just related to known clusters rather than new cases popping up.

Yes, old and ill.. They prob don't have many nursing homes in Brazil? But old and ill none the less.

Take Ireland as an example, what percentage of people that died from covid were 65 or older.
What percentage were in nursing homes?
How many were never brought to a hospital?
Why do they government not give stats on the people passing from this?

    Hopefully something similar happens here.

Our initial spread happened because we didn't know it was in the country, because we were practicing zero social distancing, and because there was no testing or contact tracing up and running. But we will have to have masks in some public places and also think about quarantining travellers from certain countries or test them after a couple of days here.
