Converting a van to a camper

Hi folks. Myself and missus kiddums were thinking of converting a van to a camper for use primarily in Ireland. What would we need to start looking for? Is an unlined van the best starting point? Any tips about doing as much of this process myself as possible would be greatly appreciated. I'm new to both vans and campers.
