Cheers chaps, obviously grain of salt etc when talking to sales folk but a Lexus dealer principle said more or less that to me and the ole lad when we asked him about the hybrid batteries.

More or less that by the time the battery needs replacing in most cases the car is well worn in so far as you'd be after getting the value out of it, the ole lad was buying an is300h that was 4 years old.

The internet had me expecting that sort of answer at worst so was surprised to see the LS ones said to be lasting only the 10 years in here.

How does insurance work with that, for private use?

insurance covers S,D&P , depending on your county your tax office for first taxing is your real hurdle on that one, but your only real hurdle.

Aside from the Mondeo jokes has anyone got an opinion on the Xtype? Need a car urgently, as this evening I’ve reluctantly decided my Peugeot 407 estate has to be scrapped, as steering has become impossibly heavy. I’ve read all the forums as to how to sort it and have just run out of patience! Any particular problems with the Jag/Mondeo?

The batteries can be reconditioned by anyone handy with DIY, Anything post 08 is dreamer money though with some cars being advertised for €8K+ which is double their value IMO...

It's a fine looking example of a fine car at a very good price.

If it was local to me I'd buy it in an instant.

it is basically a mondeo so doubt theres any nightmares or really expensive fixes. I always had a liking to the x type . If you can get one loaded up with the auto box and the navigation it still looks well inside. Its not a barge but in terms of used exec cars id take one over an e60 520d. Theres also loads of clean ones for under 2k

I'm no expert by any means. I was just looking at this that says 8 years is all the pack can be expected to last for. Obviously that's a baseline, but a 2008 pack would be 12 years old now. Also reading that you can replace individual cells, as sometimes only one or two cells are bad.

Lusting after one of these now :) I see a trip to the UK in my future when current circumstances change.

Many thanks for replies! How much would I get for scrap on an 05 407 estate?

Probably not a lot, if the battery and tyres are good you could keep them as spares if you buy the jag.

    no, its a mondeo!

    Those words make me cringe.

I bought one of those before because everyone said “It was a Mondeo” and I thought sure that’s great.

Then the engine went in it and it was everything but a Mondeo. I’ve never had a more anxiety inducing car ownership in my life than that of my X-Type.

ohh I remember that, what were the issues with it.

ohh I remember that, what were the issues with it.

To be fair, the initial issue was it constantly loosing power. Which was an Air mass sensor. So me being young and cheap I bought a second hand one which didn’t work. So then bought another second hand which didn’t work. So I then bought a new one... which didn’t work... then i realised it was actually the wiring at fault and someone had been at it before.

Finally got that sorted and then the engine went. Chain slipped. Couldn’t get a chain kit from Ford so had to be Jag and of course they didn’t do a kit, had to buy everything separate.

Tried to get a “block” for the engine and keep the ancillaries but absolutely no one could confirm they were the same block as a Mondeo, so that meant I had to buy a Jaguar block which was literally 6 times the price. Got that in from the north and fitted and sure enough the chain was actually gone in that as well. So that engine back out and back and swapped with another one.

I then sold it, very fast.

I should say I think I actually broke even on it and I had it for 6 months. Although I hated it for those 6 months because I couldn’t trust it

They are the same block though surely?

We had 2 diesel 2005 X Types in the family. Both were the most unreliable cars I've ever seen. Have had countless BMW, Audi, Mercedes etc. and nothing came close to the sheer hassle of the Jags.

I had a saloon version for a few years and loved it. At around 100k mile I had to replace the DMF. I got a DMF/clutch kit from Germany and it cost around €1k all in incl. fitting.

Other than that, I never had a moments problem with it. Very comfortable, very economical.

In two minds! If I got it for around €2k it would be an easy way out and if it did go wrong it wouldn’t be a financial disaster!

That's the way go ...if you go on any specific car forum ( and I mean any car) basically all you will see is people posting their problems. And there are certain makes that develop problems specific to a certain year or manufacture or specific engine. The BMW n47 engine being a case in point. But on these forums, you will get a lot of info on what to avoid etc. There has never been any car that lived it's whole life 100% problem free,,,its all a question of the size of the problem, and how expensive it will be to fix. Let us know what you decide, and how you get on, OK? Was often thinking about a Jag myself, but nothing suitable on the scene at the time I was looking. maybe next time though?

    If you snooze you lose.

Then again you might have dodged a bullet, keep the faith, there'll be another one along again as sure as night follows day and probably better value.

Leather ok - but Nav? Surely a reasonably modern iPhone/Android smart phone would be far superior to the era of sat nav at your price point?
I certainly wouldn't let that option stop you buying the car you want.

referring to the earlier post from L-M -> I had a similar story with an 04 Passat Sport.
6 speed box main bearing packed up at 64k miles. Back in 2006-7 I think, anyway, like L-M, I purchased a second hand box from the UK, got it shipped and fitted - wrong box (speed sensor was wrong). Box back out, shipped back to the uk Ended up getting another box out of a scrap yard in the north. That worked (just about as it had a crunch in second) and then a long year of part failures (cv joints, suspension parts, window regulators, alternator(s) and I also managed to crash it)
Needless to say I was delighted to see the back of that yoke.
It was just a bad luck car for me I guess - turned me right off the VW marque.

I know this is an extreme example but some luxobarges are complete money pits, w220s are nearly bangernomic money now but when they work they are great motors, my one I previously owned is now in the hands of another boards.ie.

its not so much about the nav, but having inbuilt nav firstly the larger colour screen makes a car feel a lot younger, the nav screen usually means reversing camera or an easy retrofit of one and in a lot of cases it comes with bluetooth calling / tv or dvd player or any other host of cool toys that a car without nav wouldn't possess.

I couldn’t have put it better! Any way I think I’ll up the budget! I don’t want the bother of a loan, but could stretch to €5k! If anyone come across anything in that range I’d be grateful!

Crew cab, 5 seats, 6 previous owners, cheap tax?

How does the tax work on that so?
