Our testing has been a complete mess from day one.

Case numbers...wouldnt read much into em, whether they are 900 or 300.

14 additional probables on top of the 59 announced deaths according to Holohan - 73 in total.

57 new deaths (45 confirmed, 14 probable, minus 2 denotified)

    Question:

Are we using any of the testing capacity to do sampling yet?

It seems like we should be doing a representative community testing sample of even a few thousand tests to get a sense of what the spread is, without using self-selection/selection bias based on triaging symptoms.

It should also be done in ALL EU countries that want to compare.

    It’s definitely 229.

    1.2% growth is impressively low.

    Yes, it’s low.

But reported deaths has seen a >300% increase over yesterday’s figure.

And yes, I realise there is a lag in reporting.

It's a giant contradiction. 100,000 tests a week but too high a bar for the vast vast majority to even get a test.

Sounding more and more like a public relations scam to me.

ICU and hospital admissions seem to be the big ones that will decide what will happen on May 5. Still too high there is what they are saying. We'll see how many new cases emerge from new definition.

Because spread is low. Been said on here many times.

Well to put it another way what changed since Sunday when we reported 701 cases. We didn't have a high spread on Sunday and a low spread today.

701 cases on Sunday was our highest day yet I believe (without counting results from German labs to clear a backlog).

The variation is wild and undermines the value of dailly numbers.

They are scared of overwhelming, the system again. I guess they will gradually broaden the criteria over time, as long as the have excess capacity.

It doesn't play well but I guess they don't really have a choice.

To make a long story short they just haven't constructed an Infrastructure able to test and contact chase enough people to control the disease.

That's just luck. You could test 1000 one day and they're all positive and 1000 next day and they're all negative. The numbers just depend on what sample the scientist picks to do first.

In 48 hours we go from our highest day of new cases (not including results from German labs to clear backlog) to our lowest day in four weeks.

It could be just luck but I don't believe in luck to that level.

I'm more likely to believe that people in testing centres took Sunday off and that meant the labs were quiet today.

I don't feel that it's acceptable to go from our highest level of activity to our lowest this month in 48 hours without explanation.

The idea of that high a number is to be able to respond to any future outbreaks in real time. It's a proper testing system! At some point they will most likely use that capacity to do some random testing to get a sense of the spread of it.

The states around New York are being absolutely hammered..400 deaths in New Jersey today, only has a population of 8.8 million.

Connecticut reports around 100 deaths per day the last while, only a population of 3.5 million. If it was the size of the UK or France it would be the equivalent of those countries reporting about 2000 deaths daily

I’m not sure if the testing labs take days off, but a lab could send their daily results through after a certain cut-off point. I believe that is one thing that can account for low/high numbers on consecutive days

Seems ICU number have actually increased slightly. Now 141 in ICU.

If that's the case then they haven't been telling the truth about hospital capacity. Because based on the availability they claim to have, we haven't put any real pressure on the system.

Could they have tested a large number of care homes last week results relased over weekend and these are not being done this week???

It always has. They havent determined the new sickness that's been reported in children to be linked with covid 19.

Should be asked this week at the briefings.
They should have some insights into the reliability of the test itself given that some (whether their health care workers or care home patients) have been tested multiple times during this testing phase.

Yes that's my take on it. They tested far and wide in care homes, staff etc. and scored a high hit rate.

Now its back to people with 1 symptom so less chance of a positive.

1 symptom but you must belong to a priority group.
