One million cases now in the States. Doesn't look to good at all here.

On a per capita basis they are better than a lot of other countries, including us.

The figures (including ICU admissions) are not as low as he would like.

I would say they have a list of indicators to hit before removing any restriction. It’s less than 7 days to the deadline so I would say one of those may have been at least 7 days with new cases or admissions below a certain level.

Down to the wire my backside. I'd say they have no intention of easing restrictions

The lockdown in Ireland and the UK is starting to give visible results. Same for NY, Belgium and Holland. Coming out of lockdown would be madness for any of these places.

I suspect they have no plan and no such indicators. They are still just winging things like they have from the start.

You can responsibly come out of lockdown. Many regions of the world have developed smart ways to keep outbreaks minimal while maintaining a relative normality to daily life. We know a lot more now about how the virus spreads

No new cases then the lockdown lifted some lad on the news just said that

See you in September then if that’s the case

Nope, look at border areas, wont happen by region now

Usually the suggestions are always "remove restrictions from (my area) and for (my age group), but keep restrictions in other areas and for other people.

Excess mortality in the USA implies covid deaths in the country may be close to double the official figure.

    On worldometers
USA: 15,400 excess deaths (compared to the year 2019) were recorded in March through April 4, 2020. During the same period, 8,128 coronavirus deaths were reported. The difference is 7,272 deaths (89% more)

People think we have a choice. Lifting restrictions will cause infections to explode, disabling the Economy. People think they have a choice. Don't take my word for it. Take bill's.

Jesus...the comments under that YouTube video are just tragic. Stupid, stupid, people.

Did he really say that the wearing of masks can lead to the spread of the virus in some cases

It is true for the wearer if not used correctly. The big benefit of masks in the community environment is preventing spread not protecting the wearer.

Yeh but deaths are really trending down. Looks like USA may plateau at around 70,000 deaths for the first wave which is probably the best case scenario.

would that mean aprox. a 7% death rate for the 1st wave? With the caveat nothing is ever over until...

But we started our lock down before NI? they ddin't care then...

We can only control what we do. Would it have been the right decision to do nothing because that’s what NI did? And would it be right to lift them with a completely open border behind which there was no change? There would be a flood of NI reg cars across the border like it was the 12th. We don’t have to align completely with them but we would want to be close

What do you mean? USA has millions of unreported cases. Death rate is like 0.7-0.8% based on antibody testing in New York

Given that most of those people to whom the virus is most harmful - the elderly and younger people with serious health problems - are cocooning or distancing themselves from the rest of the population, why are so many people with the virus becoming ill so seriously that they need to be taken to hospital?

Not 'so many'. Nobody said it only affected elderly and ill. But the healthy and young people requiring hospitalisation from COVID are a minority(to say the least)

Cases are now in the many millions, of course we will begin to see 'lots ' of young healthy people who have had a rough ride, doesnt mean that the disease is now any more likely to cause serious illness within this group

Better tell Belgium and Holland so who both announced when and how they'll relax things

I was wrong on that number. I took it from RTEs graph on their summary page. I had tried and failed to remember what it was.

    Currently it says:
    Travel 4%
    Contact with Confirmed Case 33%
    Community Transmission 63%

I'm missing something, I might have the wrong definition of what Community Transmission is, I was under the impression that (like back at the start when that first case in Cork was labelled that when they didn't know where he picked it up) if someone was a Community Transmission case, they'd picked it up from an as-yet-unknown source.

Those stats are the percentages for all cases to date.
Philip Nolan has reported that community transmission is now down to very low levels, but clearly not zero.

    is_that_so wrote: »
That's just stats on where those cases occurred, not the rate of transmission. Community transmission really means catching it anywhere outside a medical location or a residential home.

A community transmission is a case where they cant explain the source, so not a close contact with a known case, cluster or travel from a hot spot.

Don’t be ridiculous. They have taken incorrect steps and even negative steps, they may have a poor plan, but the idea they are winging it is complete nonsense. Not least because If that was the case someone from NPHET would have broken ranks and leaked to the media.

Last October, the WHO found scientifically robust evidence for the effectiveness of just two of the measures currently being implemented or discussed: hand hygiene and wearing masks (in institutions of the health system). However, she described the quality of the scientific evidence for the effectiveness of all other measures such as social distancing, contact tracing, travel restrictions and house arrest as low or very low.

A few months later, the WHO then recommended precisely those measures for which it had not recently been able to find reliable evidence of their effectiveness.

The contradiction between these two events cannot now be resolved simply by pointing out that the WHO document of 2019 refers to pandemic influenza, while the COVID-19 crisis was triggered by another and possibly much more dangerous virus. Firstly, on page 3 of the said document, the WHO expressly refers to a new virus for which there is still no basic immunity in the human population. On the other hand, the current WHO recommendations would appear even more questionable: If the coronavirus is the more dangerous pathogen, why should one rely on a list of measures whose effectiveness cannot even be proven against flu?

    People really need to chill.

The plan is been released in the next few days.

Can you not wait without spouting nonsense about their being no plan?

Spanish kids were allowed outside for the first time in 6 weeks for an hour yesterday.

Imagine Ireland trying to deal with those restrictions.

Jesus christ we are a nation of whingers and powder puff spoiled kids.
