I don't get the shock around politician's gaffes over things like this. Leo is an exception in that he's qualified as a doctor, most politician's main qualification is shaking hands outside GAA matches, with extra courses in reading out other people's speeches and door stopping. They're most qualified to be politicians, the one qualification that should make them exempt from the role.
I missed the talk here (if there was any) about Simon Harris thinking that it was covid 19 because it was the 19th coronavirus.

Personally think trying to hammer him with that is mental. For the first few years of my medical training I thought that a certain common abbreviation meant something slightly different to what it actually is. Sometimes your brain just jumps and sticks. Some of the Twitter gloating over it is crazy imo.

Yes, thank you. And the idea that he doesn’t know anything about the virus because he doesn’t know exactly how it got its name is bizarre to me. Its name is unimportant really and science names tend to be dull.

Sounds like we won't be opening anything back up in May.

Simon Harris on prime time was basically saying they need more testing and once they broaden the criteria to test as much as possible to find as much people and get them isolated.

What is the hold up with testing are they still short on kits?

Getting sick of all this now, after May 5th I'm going back up to Galway and I don't care if restrictions aren't lifted, will fight the bloody Guards if I have to to get back up to Galway, I need to restock some green and going mad without it, don't know anyone at all in Bandon and going fcuking spare I am.

    Getting sick of what?

Theres no hold up on testing, its focused on nursing homes and long term residential settings while GP referrals are down.

Up the NPHET now if they want to widen the testing criteria.

Don't think they're short on kits, it wasn't mentioned.

What I understand from it but I could be wrong, is to test everyone with symptoms... makes sense, but it's the HSE, so who knows... I can imagine testing now is focused on the nursing homes.

There are test centres in every county they must be twiddling their thumbs in them.

Well if there demand for testing isnt there they aren't opened..I'd assume the staff are redeployed to carry out testing in nursing homes with the ambulance service

Not sure why you think I want to go for a pint, I've never mentioned anything about pubs reopening. And would not be advocating for that, the longer the alcohol doesn't get consumed the better for public health in general.

I dont want to create a league table of psychological stress, and while I can empathise with your situation, I'm sure there are many others feeling a great strain too.

Some people are comfortable with the risk, some aren't, im not certain why that's hard to understand.

You can be comfortable with the risk all you want, but when you risk others, that’s what turns you into a Cnut.

We should defend our way of life to an extent that any attempt on it is crushed, so that any adversary will never make such an attempt in the future.

I'm very sorry for your loss, the son should be tested, I thought asthma was high risk and also a contact with a confirmed case meant automatic testing

Why was she released from hospital?

Said she was ok to go home yet they said she needed to wear a mask in house and so did he in case she had contacted something. She had been tested in there too 2nd April after ward outbreak but was negative then comes out of hospital apr 15th 2 weeks later and by Sunday breathing very bad . Had pneumonia / lung issues since Jan

Trump thinks Hugh Middity will take care of virus. But it's in very hot countries currently and it's spreading rapidly.

When he uses it in the context of not being able to find a vaccine for the other 18 Covids, it really isn't great.

I never once compared Ireland to NZ or Slovakia - you're clearly thinking of someone else.

The US is actually somewhat unique to most other nations in the world IMHO... they're very different to Italy for example. Yet seem to be doing reasonably well considering. (I never said they were doing great btw - just a bit better than all the doom-mongers were predicting around here!)
If you didn't mention them by name you are certainly comparing Ireland to countries like them and comparing our results negatively even if the starting line was completely different country to country:
Even the most optimistic estimates putting us in 40th place, that's still not where you want to be in the top 50 in the world...
Considering how close we are to Italy and the level of population movement in Europe, 40th "in the world" wouldn't be that bad, all things considered. I hope we don't fall down that list as it would mean the virus is spreading in other countries and the level of death would be devastating. I hope the world essentially shutting down has spared countries around the world from climbing up that list.

Everywhere is going to compare negatively to Italy. They were the canery in the coalmine for the western world, it took seeing what was happening there for most governments and, particularly, populations to take it seriously.

The Italian response had serious errors but I'm not sure any other country would have fared better. There has to be a distinction made between the countries that acted slowly when the information was unclear and those who acted slowly/wrongly when the information was clear. While mistakes were made, we acted relatively quickly. Apart from the banning of certain flights the US's response was relatively slow. They could be doing a lot worse but I'd put them closer to the U.K. response than ours.

He is convinced already. Already claims he has said it before and the fake news attacked him. If anything, he is predictable at the moment.

Disinfectant injected into the lungs? Did Trump just say that,

If Harris is saying there needs to be more testing it makes no sence to have them closed. There are people with symptoms who may have it but are not been tested. I'm all for the restrictions at the moment but what's the point if people cant be tested.

I seen a man over the road and his son heading off in his van somewhere last week and his wife at home with Covid 19 pure madness by some people.

Personally, can't see how that could work as it's socially very destructive. I'd expect them to have some guidelines around it but definitely not insist that we stick to it with families.

Hope so. Haven’t seen my grandparents for 6 weeks now

Yep loads of new cases in Singapore, and anywhere in the US that's hot and humid has A/C out of the wazoo, this is nonsense.

A relative passed from covid today . Released from hospital last Wednesday told to wear mask at home in case ! had been in for weeks only to be brought in again 5 days later Sunday with covid 19. Within 4 days she deteriorated and died. Was elderly with underlying health issues.

Her son who has been caring for her is not getting tested? Gp said to call if he gets symptoms and he said the nurse on ward today also said unless he has symptoms he doesn’t need to be tested. I find this very hard to understand, I fully expect him to get it he also has asthma, he was in full close proximity for Days looking after her. How can he not be tested? What about contract tracing is it only if you have symptoms

My uncle passed away from it last Thursday, my Aunt and their children were allowed go in and say goodbye, not one of them were tested just told to get in touch if they have symptoms.

Not up to Harris to set the testing criteria. All well and good to say widen it out, but doing that at the wrong time could have every idiot that has a sniffle looking for test and look where that got us at the start.

Like I said its NPHET decision and they meet tomorrow where they've said this is to be discussed.

People with symptoms are being told to isolate regardless of test, it's far from the perfect system.

As for the example you've given it just shows how thick some people are.

Hmm New York is around 12 -15 degrees? US is a big place.
Hot and humid weather does not prevent human to human transmission but it may/may not reduce levels on surfaces and air.
