You can dress up those figures anyway you like but it doesn't paint a pretty picture for Leo, Simon and Tony.

Sinn Féin would have done much better.

As of tonight, of any country with over 1,000 confirmed cases of Coronavirus we are:

5th highest in the world of confirmed cases per capita of a million people.

9th highest in the world of deaths per capita of a million people.

You can dress up those figures anyway you like but it doesn't paint a pretty picture for Leo, Simon and Tony.

Can you say for sure that all variables are removed in how countries are reporting their coronavirus data? If you can’t, then comparisons are meaningless.

edit- this is a thread that goes into an attempt to somehow reckon across the different methodologies used internationally to measure covid deaths, and what effect that has on irish figures.

this guy has been excellent throughout

if you are actually interested in trying to see how we are doing comparatively, hes the best ive found

if you are only interested in finding any old stupid reason to whinge about the govt, ...... jesus i hope at least there's something in it for you. seems an awful way to spend a pandemic otherwise.

I booked a holiday before this virus came about. A cruise holiday around the Mediterranean including Italy nonetheless. I don't want to continue with them holiday plans now. What if I get sick out abroad? Or what if I'm sent home in a coffin? Or if I pick up the virus while away and bring it home.

I was hoping on seeing some travel/holiday bans for the deposit back. I wonder will ships/cruises still sail? Or will they cancel?

    Thanks,

If there is a specific reason for a declassification then it is known at the time it is announced as a declassification and the reason should be identified, otherwise as you say it's waffle.
In the old days we called these "mistakes" but you can't say that anymore. !

:D No, it isn’t. Jesus. It’s a dry scientific name. WHY is is important for him to know exactly what it means? I didn’t know why all the bacterial stains I worked with were called what they were. It’s just not very important in the scheme of things.

Whether people admit it or not, they need or want Simon Harris to know what he's doing, to know he has an understanding as Minister for Health. It's a security thing I guess. They're looking for him to get us out of this in a way and they need to feel secure.

Me, I personally couldn't care less but, for some, it's like a pilot who doesn't know why it's called an Airbus

Hope you're doing well. Was reading about your health issues, keeping you in my thoughts

This is why there are issues with government restrictions and compliance with them. Its not just your blanch and ballymunners that are this stupid.

So the USA with 2,000 miles of land border and 1.5 million people flying in every day can stop immigration.

Yet a poster the other day told me it was impossible to close wee Ireland's borders :o

Another meaningless comparison, Virus testing statistics by country grouped by 3 countries above and 3 below Ireland when table is sorted by Tests per Million v sorted by Positives per Million, the only commonality is Italy.

    6034073

The figures are influenced by the country's testing policy. In countries with similar spread of infection, a country that only tests people admitted to hospitals will have higher "Positive / million people" and higher "% (Percentage of positive tests)" figures than a country that tests all citizens whether or not they are showing symptoms.

What is even the point of border closure anymore though? Your average Irish person is probably as or more likely to have Covid than most people in the world at the moment

Honestly at this point I feel like it is some people's knee jerk response to everything. You probably get people calling for it after they run out of tea.

The disease is here already. Stopping the few people still on planes will do nothing.

Trump stopping immigration just seems to be his stick. I wouldn't put any stock in that. The border won't be closing either. It is just certain documents will no longer be a valid reason to cross the US border. It will stop very few people but gives Trump something to talk about that isn't ratings I suppose.

I'm in Wexford and we seem to have very little of the virus here.Maybe we should lock down Dublin like they did Wuhan.

This virus transmits by people coming into contact with each other and all travel, local and international, affects that.
Political borders are not the problem. Movement and mixing is.

Worst Still, keeping Wexford free of the virus would be pointless. Nobody can live in isolation forever.

There are 129 US - Canada boarder crossing over 5000 miles. All of them are enforced heavily in normal times and aren’t controversial.

There are at least 275 to 300 roads cross the border in Ireland across its approx 319 miles. None have any border infrastructure and putting it there is so controversial it might see people attacked or even killed.

I've been willing to give Harris the benefit of the doubt with all that's been going on. As far as I'm concerned he's been pretty awful with his brief in the best of times, but he's facing something that no minister (health or otherwise) was even remotely prepared for.

However...knowing why Covid-19 is called Covid-19 really should be day 1 stuff in the present situation, and there is absolutely no excuse for him not to know what is really, really, basic information at this stage.

I understand that the guy is under a lot of pressure and there are many eyes on him at the moment. But it's simply not good enough that he can flub in such a manner.

As for why it's important...it's important, simply, because he should know it.

I read something that the virus could have been in America since last October. I was on holidays then, picked up a cold and a cough that lasted weeks. Then everybody else around me got a cough as well. Very strange looking back at it now.

I had similar symptoms in 2004. But I don't think it had anything to do with Covid-19.

But even if we only include hospital deaths from the virus, and exclude nursing & care homes... Ireland is still in the top 15 worst affected countries in europe.

Does anyone actually have a list of nations that are reporting covid deaths using the exact same criteria as Ireland (or very similar) ??

And if so, where do we rank on that particular list? That's the WHO criteria, right? So does the WHO compile a list based on their standards?

Waters are being deliberately muddied, by people who have an agenda and don't want our country being compared to anyone else... because they know damn well, it will shine an unflattering light on our governments sloppy handling of this!

If we used the exact reporting method being used by the UK and applied it to Ireland... that still puts us as the 16th worst affected country in the world.

Not quite top 10... but still not very impressive!

Even the most optimistic estimates putting us in 40th place, that's still not where you want to be in the top 50 in the world... especially when we are being fed a pack of lies about how great our government is handling this!

People can hide behind their carefully chosen criteria and statistics all they want... but the truth always comes out in the end. When you have a daily average death rate increasing from 3.3 per day to 16.5 per day in less than a month... you cannot hide from huge increases like that.

The body count is piling up (sorry to be crass - but it is)... people sticking their head in the sand and pretending we're doing great, are only fooling themselves at the end of the day. We're not doing great - we're struggling quite badly. Not as bad as it could be, thankfully, but still not worthy of all the bullsh*t positive spin being peddled around here from certain people!
