On masks, a friend of mine who lives in Singapore sent me a message with the following:
Covid carrier - chances of transmission to a person wearing a mask = 70%
Covid carrier wearing a mask - chances of transmission to a person not wearing a mask = 5%
Covid carrier wearing a mask - chances of transmission to a person wearing a mask = 1.5%

And they figured that all out without even considering the circumstances of the contact, environment/outside/inside/close contact etc? Fair play!

The highest number of deaths per day so far has been 43.

There are numbers and there are numbers....

About 30,000 people die in ireland every year (last 5 years average).
That make it approximately 82 people a day or 2500 a month.

Big change since last Friday / Saturday . What ever happened since then seems to have changed people’s attitudes. There probably needs to be an official conference similar to the one before Patrick’s Day and the end of March. Traffic is much heavier this week

Noticed this also. Had to go to my local town with a sick animal to the vets. Traffic was high and people chatting on the streets sitting on benches in the sun.

In the same podcast Drosten actually voices strong concerns over the partial lifting of restrictions that is going on in Germany right now. He is worried that Germany will needlessly lose the advantage (caused by early and comprehensive testing) that they've enjoyed up to now.
This is what our CMO keeps repeating every day. In fact he's just said that, almost word for word!

Except there was no suggestion of a full lift by anything any of them said. Anything I have seen and heard has said yes. So if people think it be a full lift must not be reading or listening properly

There won't be any lifting of these restrictions until it's declared safe enough to do so. ;)

Tony says the percentage growth of deaths day on day is still decreasing.

That could mean anything. Deaths are still rising but by a lower percentage?

Tony Says will be a new lockdown game. Replacing Simon says of course. Tony says jump. How high Tony?

Tony says the percentage growth of deaths day on day is still decreasing.

Which is exactly what you'd predict given a lot of the most fragile people die quickly at the start.

Anyway, its not clear why "percentage growth" as opposed to absolute number is the most meaningful metric here

Who exactly is on the NEPTH... or is that a state secret ?
A simple Google will show you who is on it. It's "NPHET".

Social distancing just ended in Vietnam. I am celebrating with beers on my couch, the exact same thing I've done every other night for the last three months.

100% agree. I've noticed the very same. I'm in retail so still working, and from about Friday things have just been more "normal" its like the fear factor has worn off. Added to people getting cabin fever. I was really hoping to see the numbers drop by now.

Don't be asking difficult questions now, in their simple world masks are the answer to all questions. The same way closing pubs, Chelthenham, cancelling St Patrick's day, closing national parks, holiday home owners, Bulgarians, shutting down airports were the answers in previous weeks.

I'm more or less regularly listening to podcasts from this guy
    https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=j5I68RvlTno

    https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Christian_Drosten

He's Germany's chief Corona virus explainer and (among other things) one of the virologists that developed the current test that everybody uses...so he knows his stuff.

In his latest podcast he mentions this:

There were several studies done on infections in family groups (i.e. not in hospitals) and the results are the following:

44% of transmissions of infections happen before the transmitter shows symptoms, the last day before symptoms show seems to be the most dangerous

4 days after the first show of symptoms, transmission is drastically reduced

1 week after the first show of symptoms, transmission effectively stops

    Now, read that again....

    ...think....

Realise ...that most people that got infected did so without the slightest hint or pointer that they might be in danger and most transmitters had no inkling that they in fact were one.

And that's what makes this virus so bloody dangerous and discussions about opening the pubs etc (sure, I'm grand, nothing wrong with me or my friends) so exceedingly stupid.

and for all the bean counters and number fetishists on here...No, I don't have a bloody link or an excel file with a coloured graph to back this all up...it's a quote from a podcast from a guy that I and at least half of all Germany explicitly trusts ...mkay?

Ach. Auf Deutsch :( my German is too schlecht to follow it. Anyways he sounds like a worthwhile source so it is requoted for others.

Its the angle/branding the government are putting on May 5th. "Stay the course", etc.. Simon Harris even tweeted "It will be worth it" which I agree with, but absolutely the wrong phrase to use... If I was only looking at rte and twitter, I'd be booking holidays/flights for May 6th, planning parties or a visit my granny in a nursing home.

The attitude is 'ah sure we're nearly there'.

Simon Harris is giving interviews which are resulting in mixed messages talking about schools being opened for a day a week etc. People are becoming complacent as a result I feel. In my estate it is like any other day with kids mixing, young kids from different families etc.

    CFR = Case fatality rate
    NR = Not reported

Source: Department of Health, the Health Protection Surveillance Centre and the HSE.

    NOTES: -
    * Daily increase numbers on these dates represent both new cases and older cases reported from Germany which results in skewed daily % increases and average case reporting % changes, numbers are broken down as:-
    Day|Date|New Irish Cases|German Cases
    42|10/04/20|480|1035
    43|11/04/20|553|286
    44|12/04/20|430|297
    45|13/04/20| 527|465
    46|14/04/20|548|284
    47|15/04/20|657|411
    48|16/04/20|629|95
    49|17/04/20|597|112
    50|18/04/20|630|148
    51|19/04/20|445|48

    ~ Denotification of deaths:-
    10/04/20 – 1
    16/04/20 – 1
    21/04/20 – 1
    22/04/20 – 10

** "Recovered" rates are not reported by the Department of Health in the above link, these figures are taken from the Worldmeters and Johns Hopkins websites which use data supplied by the DoT to the ECDC under the WHO Guidelines for reporting.

Recovered statistics are only be published as "recovered" following two successful tests of being clear of the virus under the WHO reporting guidelines, as a result it is likely the recovered data is skewed. Updated on 15/04/20 - The WHO reporting criteria has been changed recently to eliminate the 2 test requirement before reporting as recovered, now an outcome report is sent within one month of initial notification or when an outcome is known, the available health outcomes are either “recovered/healthy”, “not recovered", “death", “unknown" or “other", weather this helps create more accurate recovery numbers or skews them further is yet to be seen.

*** Due to the above issue with reporting of recovered cases the number of active cases is also likely skewed.

    NOTES: -
    * The PHA changed over to daily dashboard reporting from 21/04/20, however due to an error in reporting the dashboard was taken down which resulted in no official daily case figures released for the 21/04/20 and 22/04/20 as a result (other than deaths which were released via news sources). The DoH also advised on 22/04/20 that the total number of deaths on 22/04/2020 stands at 250 which includes revised figures for an unspecified number of previous days.

So only 7 coronaviruses, not 18!

I sincerely hope Simon didn't get 18 other corona viruses from the fact that this is Covid 19 (which is not the virus its the disease)

Simon Harris is giving interviews which are resulting in mixed messages talking about schools being opened for a day a week etc. People are becoming complacent as a result I feel. In my estate it is like any other day with kids mixing, young kids from different families etc.

Has the HSE ordered plenty of sanitiser and PPE for the schools? Schools should be closed till September at minimum. What’s the point in having a class of 30 divided into five days a week? They’ll be attending for one day per week, which is nothing. What a waste of time and risk to everyone for no benefit.

I'd respectfully suggest that he's still more of an expert, and in a position to say anything relating to the situation, than you are.

You don't have to be an expert in virology to understand simple numbers.

    49 deaths is 49 deaths whether it's increasing by 100% or 1%.

Equally 631 cases is 631 cases.

As you get more and more cases and deaths of course both inevitably grow by a lower percentage.

Over time it becomes less relevant in terms of the extent of the problem on the ground.
