Annnnnnd when did Conor give us this nugget of wisdom, that’s right folks when it had already spread. He’s a genius right and dr. Ryan who worked for years on the Ebola crisis in Africa is a moron. All hail king Conor who called it.. oh wait he didn’t. It had already spread! Too late already gone! Duh.

In fairness WHO did nothing to try and isolate the virus in China. They just let it spread all over the world. WHO are negligent in their handling of this crises.

Ryan is not a moron. However, his performance during this crises has been awful. It’s not that he couldn’t do better, it’s that certain actions were not acceptable politically. Politics over health.

What is this crap? Fact is he is right about closing borders. Why are you criticising he m for saying something right?
How about he said it because he was waiting patiently for it to be done and eventually got pissed off like the rest of us and decided to use his large following to try and get something done about it?

Since when has the WHO the authority to close borders and ground flights or how exactly were you expecting the WHO to stop the disease spreading?

They can give recommendations. They didn’t do that.

That’s right the WHO knew all along and did nothing they knew the information about how infectious it was when it started in December and they didn’t shut down de airports in December. Stooooooooopid WHO. Politics over health. WHO want us all to die and love pandemics. Yes. Especially Dr. Ryan who is a stooopid doo doo head. Conor is a genius who would have closed Chinese airports in December stopped wuhan people travelling to other countries immediately.

So they were supposed to convince China to stop all travel and close borders when China weren't even acknowledging the disease?

This all happened in December. Conor said nothing. Stop regurgitating this nonsense.

The virus is highly contagious and it had already spread for months before Conor said a damn thing.

I'm finding some people in surprising positions don't seem to be taking social distancing seriously enough. I've had a number of deliveries where the delivery person knocked on the door and wanted to hand the item directly into my hands, or wanted to bring the thing into my house.

This would be very nice in normal times, but these aren't normal times. We aren't doing this for fun.

A delivery person is a really good vector for the disease, and any company suggesting that they should treat customers as if social distancing doesn't matter, should be made aware that they're out of order.

Are ye just referring to Dublin prices here? Plenty of people with new mortgages on 55K paying 1200 a month.

How does that work? How much of a mortgage did these people get?

Closing borders for all but essential travel such as truck drivers, doctors and nurses coming home is going to be the only way for countries to solve this. That reality is slowly dawning on everyone.

Did WHO condemn China for not acknowledging the disease? Did they recommend for flights in and out of China to stop?

Just to put it into perspective though. You can look at this in another way:

Chinese scientists working in China and Australia conducted good research to show that a SARS type virus found in animals could mutate and infect humans and published the research publicly. Sounds pretty mundane when viewed that way doesn’t it? Also, 2007.

Sars is much more deadly and kills the host quicker, so tends to be a less successful virus. Successful viruses keep the host alive for as long as possible to spread the furthest.

Can someone help me with timelines here? So if Tony Holohan tells us we have 500 "new cases" this evening, when are they likely to have been infected?

Let's say I get sneezed on and infected on day 1. Presumably it could be 10 to 14 days before I develop symptoms. I wait a day or two, hoping against hope. Then I go to the Doc who says, OK you're a proper person to send for a test. Then I wait X days for a test, get tested, and then I wait Y days for the result. Then I'm a "new case".

Isn't it possible (even leaving aside the delayed German tests) that a lot of "new cases" are actually people who were infected up to 4 weeks ago? Possibly longer?

Sorry if this has been asked and answered multiple times before.

They were studying that pathway since Sars 1 also uses Ace 2 receptors as mode of entry into cells. It is not inconceivable that other corona virus strains in the wild had this capability. What they were studying were short chimaeric sequences, nothing like a fully fledged virus.

It is entirely possible that the virus came from the lab if they were studying existing strains in bats, but not because they manufactured it. That paper simply shows that they were studying how Sars infects through the Ace2 receptor. That is exactly what you would expect a lab founded to research coronavirus pathogens to research since it is one of the two coronavirus strains at that time known to cause ARDS in humans.

That paper is from 2007. I fully admit I do not understand the mechanics you describe so I'd definitely defer to your understanding. It seems most credible scientists believe it wasn't a lab construct so you are in good company.

I do think that the outbreak could have started from an unintentional release from one of the two labs which were known to be studying corona viruses in bats. These labs in china have released viruses by accident in the past, namely SARs. There are verifiable reports of the work they were doing on bats.

The dury is most definitely out but there needs to be an investigation.

    https://thebulletin.org/2020/03/experts-know-the-new-coronavirus-is-not-a-bioweapon-they-disagree-on-whether-it-could-have-leaked-from-a-research-lab/#
Ebright points out that scientists in Wuhan have collected and publicized a bat coronavirus called RaTG13, one that is 96 percent genetically similar to SARS-CoV-2. The Nature Medicine authors are arguing “against the hypothesis that the published, lab-collected, lab-stored bat coronavirus RaTG13 could be a proximal progenitor of the outbreak virus.” But, Ebright says, the authors relied on assumptions about when the viral ancestor of SARS-CoV-2 jumped to humans; how fast it evolved before that; how fast it evolved as it adapted to humans; and the possibility that that the virus may have mutated in cell cultures or experimental animals inside a lab.

Here's the paper which details the kind of work done in wuhan and how it is very plausible.
We screened the area around the seafood market and identified two laboratories conducting research on bat coronavirus. Within ~280 meters from the market, there was the Wuhan Center for Disease Control & Prevention (WHCDC) (Figure 1, from Baidu and Google maps).
    .......
The expert in collection was noted in the Author Contributions (JHT). Moreover, he was broadcasted for collecting viruses on nation-wide newspapers and websites in 2017 and 2019 7,8. He described that he was once by attacked by bats and the blood of a bat shot on his skin. He knew the extreme danger of the infection so he quarantined himself for 14 days 7. In another accident, he quarantined himself again because bats peed on him. He was once thrilled for capturing a bat carrying a live tick 8.

And if the BCG vaccine does give some protection we should be lower again as we were running that programme longer than most.

Would most of our elderly population have had the vaccine though? People of 75-80+. We didn't introduce the vaccine until the late 40s, so only children lucky enough to have lived near and be treated in St Ultan's would have received the vaccine in the decade before that. A number of people in that demographic would also be likely to be TB survivors. I'd actually be very interested to know how TB survivors fare against Covid 19.

*"Recovered" rates are not reported by the Department of Health in the above link, these figures are taken from the Worldmeters and Johns Hopkins websites which use data suplied by the DoT to the ECDC under the WHO Guidelines for reporting. Recovered statistics can only be published as "recovered" following two successful tests of being clear of the virus under the WHO reporting guidelines, as a result it is likely the recovered data is skewed.

** Due to the above issue with reporting of revovered cases the number of active cases is also likely skewed.

As far as I am aware, the vaccine loses its effectiveness over a period of time. Not to sure even if they received the vaccine will it still be effective

How are we acutally faring out in the whole thing ? Is it just me or is the recovery rate very slow ? And is the recovery rate being monitored properly ?

They don't seem to be able to monitor the newly infected rate properly never mind who's recovering.

There are verifiable reports of the work they were doing on bats.l]

They've been studying these viruses from bats for a long time yet dont seem to have made any great discoveries. Seems like it's all risk and very little reward. They should just cease.

Did WHO condemn China for not acknowledging the disease? Did they recommend for flights in and out of China to stop?

They did not know how infectious it was for starters, this information emerges after the virus has spread. They are a diplomatic organisation. Could they work with China, U.S etc., if they started slagging off countries before this is over? There are people on this forum yourself included who don’t understand what the role of the WHO is.

Do you? If this virus originated in a poor African country do you think the WHO approach would have been the same?

Conor McGregor is not a medical expert, I don't think he's ever claimed to be. Like the rest of us he watched he read all about what was happening, used his position to tell people to stay safe, spent some of his own money on PPE gear for hospitals before anybody else that I've heard of do it. He then wants a complete lockdown to protect him and his family and the rest of us.
Nothing wrong with anything he has done.
Get over your hate of the man, and if you can't will you kindly shag off and take your idiotic posts with you.

Great explanation on the exponential decay that occurs with viruses on surfaces. Waiting a few hours reduces massively (due to exponential decay) but initial viral load is a massive factor on how long it will take for a surface to virus free. Best err on side of caution.

    Ah conspiracy theories.

Dr. Tedros is from Ethiopia by the way. WHO have done great work in African on the Ebola outbreak.

Yes. Scientists did not know how infectious it was. Wuhan is a city of 11 million has an airport. Even IF they had closed immediately which would have been almost impossible then they would have to track all the people who flew and contact trace all the suspected contacts not to mention the ones they don’t know about.

Closing borders for all but essential travel such as truck drivers, doctors and nurses coming home is going to be the only way for countries to solve this. That reality is slowly dawning on everyone.

I'm not sure if that's what's happening at all? We have some countries (including Spain!) considering lifting restrictions.
