The reality with this situation is that no matter how well we manage this lockdown, no matter how low we bring the R0 number, it doesn't matter. We could eradicate covid 19 in Ireland in the morning, and someone would come in on a plane or ferry in the afternoon and the cycle starts again.

That's scaremongering, are you not cognisant of the fact that the SAME thing simply CANNOT happen again as an increasing number of the population are becoming immune ???

Don`t you have the Garda phone number?

Reckon I should call? I’m not the type to complain to neighbours or give a crap about what they’re doing but in this serious pandemic the behaviour has pissed me off a bit, mainly because I’m worried.

Everyone that ever tested positive is counted in our overall 8,928 figure are they not.

They should not be included in new case growth rate because they’re not new. They’re cases that were waiting so long to be tested here that they were sent abroad.

Unfortunately I also know of another case where the person was told during the week they were negative and rang by the HSE today to be told they were actually positive!!

I'd hate to see them manage pregnancy tests, you'd know your positive by the birth :p

I've been following the thread from the start but haven't posted before....however I have to come in about all the comparisons. First of all it's not a competition between countries. If anyone is doing well it's a bonus!

But I find it very hard to read the posts predicting doom and gloom for Ireland and almost revelling in how badly we are (supposedly) doing. You can't compare apples with oranges. Every country seems to be collating their numbers differently so comparisons are meaningless.

And as if to prove my point there is a report on Sky at the moment about the fact that deaths in nursing homes in the UK are NOT being included in their stats and that today alone 'dozens' of deaths occurred in those settings.

Someone said earlier that they would be interested to know where Ecuador sits on those graphs.....and I would too. I'd be curious to see India/Africa/other south American countries stats too. But do you really think that countries where there are bodies piling up on the streets have the time and the inclination to work out those numbers.... so those graphs are next to valueless....yet if you read one particular poster here, according to the numbers there, we are on course to have the highest mortality rate in the world! Complete rubbish and wanton scaremongering.

It also bothers me when posters talk about how wretched we are as a people, unable to do this, that and the other...whether it be observe the lockdown, conduct the number of tests we need, source PPE etc etc etc. Talk about negative. I hear the exact same reports emanating from other countries. What about focusing on the positive...the number of people who volunteered, the number of contributions to the feed the heroes campaign, the vast majority of the population who are adhering to the lockdown conditions...what about all that?

And when all is said and done, all anybody can do is look after themselves and their physical and mental health as best they can. And I can tell you, coming on here and spreading negativity will do you (and others) no good at all!!!

Until they test negative, they're defined as additional cases. No?

Bollox. The weekend before Paddys all the pubs were heaving because people knew they were going to be closed.

    All the beaches were heaving.

All the shops were rammed with the panic buyers.

Lets be honest, we all partied;)

    No, he's absolutely correct...

Anyone who went over to Cheltenham, is a total cnut. And they will certainly have played a big role in spreading the virus!

But our main criticism should still be leveled at our politicians. They could have stepped in at any moment, and taken the lead... but they didn't want anything to do with it. There's blood on many people's hands around Cheltenham!

Now isn't the time for recriminations - but there should be a time for it in the future, when we review our handling of this whole crisis.

I do think that Cheltenham became a lightening rod for people’s anger but I’m not sure it’s all justified. I agree wholeheartedly that it should have been cancelled or held behind closed doors but it wasn’t, for whatever reason (money, money, money and bookies - yes - I know). But I don’t think castigating everyone who went is getting us anywhere. It’s something that will continue to be a bone of contention though, I feel.

I guarantee 95% of them are recovered. They’re not new cases. I don’t see how you’re disagreeing.

Lads on the 7th of March our chief medical officer expected a few cases over the coming weeks. I don’t think you can blame people who travelled to Italy at mid term.

    That's some epic cynicism.

Maybe, just maybe, people want to feel part of the effort. Lighting fires is tradition the night before Easter so it was quite apt I thought

Hospital admissions and ICU those are the numbers to watch
    https://twitter.com/datavizireland/status/1249038035251068928?s=19

When you remove the German results.

The percentage of patients requiring ICU is slightly up today but the trend is still very much downwards.

People reading way too much into the case numbers when including the German results. As much as alot of people want to think we're in such an awful position, the hospitals are coping very well. And all trends are still downwards. Look at the stats before sensationalising

Please be very wary of these graphs.

The % growth is falling but the numbers are still growing.

As numbers get bigger, growth rate will naturally fall.

100 to 110 is 10% growth and 10 in number.

400 to 420 is 5% growth and 20 in number.

    Growth rate lower. Number higher.

You say all trends are downwards. This is a misrepresentation.

Yes it is but its not like our gubermont were prepared for a pandemic as they don't come along that often. Oh but hold on a minute there was this...The Event 201 pandemic exercise, conducted on October 18, 2019...

I'm guessing that they would have prioritised the most recent tests in the backlog.

And if that's the case there's loads that could still be infectious.

We know that, of course the numbers, go up day on day.The growth rate is an indicator of whether things are slowing down or not... well it would be if the testing turnarounds werent so problematic.
