It's easy to think about in terms of spread rate. How many new people will the infected infect? If it's between the 1.3-1.5x spread rate(Which is what this virus is- a doubling of new cases every 3-4 days) of uncontrolled spread then the whole world would catch it in a matter of 2 months.
On the Horizon program during the week, they graphically showed the difference between 1.1 and 1.3 (as far as I can recall) spread rate with rice grains on a checkerboard. With 1.1, after starting with one and a bit rice grains, the amount of rice grains at the other end of the board was manageable. With 1.3, the rice grains was a huge heap of rice falling over the side of the board.

Startling would be one word for it.

It should be mandatory to wear a mask when going out but I have a feeling that the HSE/Government aren't making it mandatory due to the shortage of masks.
They should make us wear masks when they start loosening the current restrictions.

To give you a heads up, once those become mandatory, elastic bands will be hard to source for a while (experience from my home country).

New elastic might be hard to source, but most households will find they have all the elastic already in their poccession. Elasticated bed sheets unwanted bra's and underwear...

From this Youtube tutorial, https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4FB--BOyTiU I made up the following two DIY masks, which are basically the same as the cloth face masks recommended by the American CDC.

Three layers of cotton material, outer layers from an old khaki shirt and the inner, brushed cotton from an old pair of pyjamas. I used a sewing machine but they could also easily be hand sewn.

Love the khaki colour you choose, I really like her use of clips instead of pining, less holes in mask....

Would you consider adding a nose strip modification to it?

Save elastics off used disposable masks, as well as the bendable aluminum bit

You take the gloves off after putting shopping in boot, thrown them in bin outside shop, sanitise hands with hand sanitiser door handles and phone cover (and card with a disinfectant wipe).

Fresh gloves to bring in shopping and wipe it down then take off those gloves bin.

For me gloves are extra protection, it isnt rocket science a coupe of videos and ads explaining gloves and masks like the handwashing ones and people will be flying

But where is the extra level of protection? Can you explain it, cause I'm not seeing it.. unless you are also wearing ffp3 and goggles? You don't get this particular virus through breaks in the skin.. one advantage might be that most people don't disinfect their hands properly after coming out of the shop (you need at least 30 seconds again, so 2 applications of dis) so you'll reduce the risk a bit I guess.. a side benefit from wearing them would be not having to wash your hands so much

The only time I personally wear gloves is when I've gone to the garage to fill up(or check my tyre pressures). I'd see a petrol pump handle as a pretty "dirty" item, with dozens of people using it per hour in a half way busy petrol station. Usually one glove actually. I open the petrol cap with my other hand, fill up, then remove the glove correctly and into the bin provided, then into the shop to pay up.

Doesng hoover bag fabric have fibreglass particles that are basically like asbestos when they get to your lungs? Be careful the cure isn't worse than the disease.

A leading expert on epidemics and pandemics in the US, who caught it, said he thought it had a higher R0 than even the 2-3 posited, which is scary.

There are so many different mask ideas out there.

I know there are mixed reports about hoover bag masks, and I won't have access to one before I need the mask anyway.

Is there any consensus yet from medical experts, or from any reputable medical organisation, on the best homemade mask?

Ordered elastic and nose bridges on AliExpress I figure I’ll have time to make masks since not leaving house.

Brought some melt blown cloth wipes to use as filter

The old cotton shirt I used just happened to be that colour. ;)

I used similar stationery clips, a little too wide but they did the job.

The gap around the nose should be closed ok., I will be using a pair of sports glasses to close the gap and also protect the eyes.

If I was adding a strip, I would probably bend a piece of light coat hanger wire to the shape required and hand stitch it into the seam, so it's invisible.

At the moment the ECDC and the CDC are citing various materials as suitable, cotton is getting mentioned alot. I'm making uses 3 layers of cotton and a replacable kitchen towel.

The unanimous consensus for the best homemade mask will be in how the wearer uses it, How it fits to your face, how you put it on, test it, wear it, take it off, not weather it is that blend or this blend of fabric, obviuosly tightly woven = smaller holes, 2 or 3 layers obviously offer more protection. Make and test then you will know what suits you.

Yeah alot of people citing fiberglass free Hepa hoover bags as hard to breath through. Havn't taken this road myself but aware that sometimes one needs to strip the plastic layer sandwiched between the 2 hepa layers out before assembling into mask.

If you want your homemade mask to be the best then you need to consider it only as a complementary measure and not as a replacement for established preventive measures, for example physical distancing, respiratory etiquette, meticulous hand hygiene and avoiding touching the face, nose, eyes and mouth.

FIT TESTING AND HAND WASHING PLAY A CRITICAL ROLE IN SAFE MASK USAGE.

Cotton and some type of filter. A filter can be dried tissue or dried baby wipe. In America the best filter is the car shop wipes, not sure where you would get that here.

An post have a notice saying there is no deliveries from China at present , I normally have 2-3 deliveries a week , nothing since before CNY , I have about 25 orders shipped from Ali , but in the system , stopped

You’ll not likely see your mask stuff for about 3 months lol

Two layers of conventional kitchen paper towels held in a cotton pouch will be about 90% effective as against N95 FFP2 , ( which isn’t much more then a dust mask really ). Change it regularly

    What are you ordering??

I’ve had two AliExpress deliveries this week; one the knock off pod Apple headphones, the other solar battery chargers. Last week I received earrings and a necklace. I’ve got elastic in the sewing box if needs be, but definitely not nose bridges. I can make do.

The wipes are shop style, made of melt blown fabric from an Irish supplier.

We used very thin blue electric cable for the nose bridge

Fake iPods , waiting 6 weeks , electronic components 4-6 weeks

As I said , I would receive 3-4 delivories a week from Ali , only one parcel since CNY

    Here ya go A,
"Shop" as the Americans call garages and the like :) And yep I know the stuff and you can get or damn similar in motor factors that supply to the car trade and petrolheads. Here's an ebay ad from the UK for a 1000 sheet roll for around 50 quid.

Motor factors aren't open as far as I know, but D'internet is your oyster.

Thank you, are these the blue wipes which some shops (grocery shops) use themselves for soaking up accidental spillages?

I posted this before In the main thread. I'm a firefighter
We have been issued guidelines which basically states . We are to wear masks at all times when responding to calls. That's in the appliances travelling to as well as at the incident. So we are protecting each other from ourselves as well as the public. We also have been told to disinfect them with the issued spray and bag them .(we are using freezer bags). Write the date on them and after 3 days they can be reused. Obviously that doesn't apply if we are at an incident where there is a confirmed or suspected covid case. Then they are bagged and disposed off as clinical waste.

It's specifically for disinfecting PPE. I'll post the actual name of it later.
