Continuing to exhibit a total lack of the temperament to be a public representative. Somehow suspect she won't be the SF candidate next time out even as an elected TD as she's embarrassed them so much.

Anyone have an overview of what the tweet was?

It was something responding to the calls for national unity, like "National unity is grand if you're one of the lads. Meh."

bit of thinly veiled sexism or the universal 'jobs for the boys' conspiracy theory, or both.... typical of SF really, Moaning instead of solutions.

Still better than that jugeared , slack jawed satyr O'Rourke. His moronic face grinning vacantly from the front page of the champion was almost enough to put me off my whiskey.

Because a politician’s appearance is so much more important than their character.

Was canvassed a few nights ago by Murphy’s people. I asked would she be prepared to go into a coalition government if elected, the chap replied authoritatively “only with FF” I asked why and he said that FG’s record in government over the last eight years was “too bad”. When I pointed out that FF had actually wrecked the economy in the first place he appeared as if this was news to him. It probably was, as I’d say he was in his mid twenties.

So, it appears that the Social Democrats are determined to continue to be the party of fence sitters.

Very disappointing as they, unlike the shinners, have people with the capability to contribute!

Disappointing that they won't prop up the same govt that has been in place for years? The govt that won't talk to the second largest party in the Dail? SD will not prop up FFFG - that's the right thing to do - not disappointing.

FWIW that article is also from February - hardly news.

We are running up enormous bills, we have a health crisis while half a million people become unemployed and the tax revenues for March just dropped a billion euros.

Soc-Dems were not going to go anywhere near government in normal circumstances and certainly not now with the type of decisions that will need to be taken. :D

Of course not being in government means you can continually criticise but have no responsibility and can’t be blamed.

What’s the point in electing politicians that behave like that?

Are they in negotiations with SF, PBP and the independents, the numbers are there?

None of those are in negotiations as far as I know - because the numbers are not there.

O'Rourke's character is of the lowest sort, his close relations with property developers are well known, his priapism is common knowledge, his hypocrisy flows from that priapism.

O'Rourke was fiscally dishonest in claiming mileage for his ride to work and physically dishonest in claiming another sort of ride.

Thank goodness someone (ban duirt liom go ban duirt leir that it was his own former supporters) warned the people of Celbridge about this in an anonymous letter before the election.

They were never ever going into power with Fine Gael who are the ideological equivalent of cancer (even though in North Kildare they are all sound especially Tony Stafford but also Bernard Durkin - who should be Ceann Comhairle instead of that...)

Yet your criticism of him was about his appearance at first, I wonder how you’d feel if we described Reada Cronin in such unflattering terms? Ah but that’s Sinn Fein, do unto others which you would not do unto yourself, someone else will always pay.

Bit of a failing since they all, with the exception of FF, FG and a couple of independents, espouse some variant of "socialism".

    Well theoritically, they are:

    FF 37 +CC
    FG 35

    Others 87

Now breakdown the Others. You have PbP/Solidarity who are untrustworthy. Labour who are nobody. And then there are two groupings of rural indepedents who are mostly one or more of: FF-genepool/anti-choice/ex-FG/Healy Raes.

If you were to add up the Others who would be a fit with SF or SF or Labour or Green the number falls way below 80.

Catherine Murphy has been quite clear. The party would like to go into govt but not at any cost. It would have to be a govt with a socially progressive programme and the numbers certainly are not there for that.

I'm an old style FG'er and would harken back to the Just Society policies of Costello and FitzGerald and now sadly lacking since FG tried to out FF FF.

I'd like an understanding of what you mean by socially progressive - and how this can be achieved without going into government. I'd like to see the SDs in gov with FG and FF. I think they would be a good influence and balance and it could work well and temper some of the globalist influence in the other parties. Probably would need Labour also which I wouldn't be keen on but they would be preferable to the Greens.

I'm a SD and I would not support the party going in with FF/FG for a second. And I think I can speak for the vast majority of the party too. Possibly with one of them in a grand coalition (e.g. with Greens and Labour) but never with both when they have 70 seats between them. There would be no chance of SD achieving anything in such a Govt.

The numbers are certainly not there for any progressive govt without one of FF/FG along with SF. And with both the civil war parties acting like spoilt brats the likelihood of a progressive programme is slim to none.

I imagine like most of your generation that you might it confusing when a party stands by their convictions and does what it says it's going to do.

Just hope the electorate remembers after the next recession who wanted to take the salary but not do any of the work.

Who knew a party with Roisin Shortall would be in favour of copping out?

Hard to see a lot of point in the SDs if that's the policy as they will never be in government!

As I said I'm generational FG but, given the situation the country is in I am prepared to support going into coalition with FF despite my father and grandfather turning in their graves :o

A massive LOL. Huge. The opinion is simplistic and reductive.

Yeah a great idea going into gov to make up numbers with parties that will not support any of their principles or policies?
Even more of a laugh when one of said parties is FF, responsible for lasting damage that is still see today in real life.

But yeah the reason the are not going into gov is to not do any work.

**** me, one of the stupidiest things I've raed on boards

Another reductive, basic argument. Yes go into gov with the party that when the were in gov the last time did what again? Oh yeah this is a good idea but supporting a party because they pretty much fundamentally disagree with them you can't see the point of.

I wonder if people actually think about what they say at times.

very cool kid with a kid's memory. Roisin Shortall stuck to her principles and quit a higher paid job to go into opposition. Opposition is a lot of work as well kiddo.
