DoneDeal headmelters

Recently had a car for sale on DoneDeal, I wouldn’t sell a lot of cars but every time i do I cringe to think of all the DoneDeal headmelts that I’m going to have to deal with, had the car up for €1450.

I’m paraphrasing but these are generally the gist of what lads were sending me;

“€600 cash today, can you meet me in clane?”

“Swap for a 02 Audi A4 fully kitted? And cash my way”

“800€ the best I can do because of high tax and insurance”

“I just want the engine I can do 700 CASH TONIGHT”

Add in a few similar phone calls from a 085 number and a few from a 089 number that I refused to answer my head was wreaked from lads melting me bracket, car eventually sold.

I know some lads on here buy and sell cars but how do you guys cope with the endless muppets on DoneDeal?

Do you have Donedeal messenger turned on or off? Turning it off helps because people have no problem sending stupid messages through Donedeal but if it’s turned off they might not bother texting your phone. No point ignoring phone calls they could be genuine buyers but I see your frustration

The country is practically on lockdown so the dimwits of dumbdeal have even more spare time to sent pointless messages now that before Covid-19 was a thing.

I think the most frustrating thing about these is that they have no intent to buy regardless.

If you text your man back, sure no problem I'm stuck for cash so I can meet you in Clane and do €600, you can bet the car on it that they wont turn up anyway.

It's a strange sport that way.

Why wouldn't you answer the phone? That'd be the channel with the most genuine buyers.

The lower the price car the worse the muppets get, some must have a daily search for sub €1500 cars and text every single one as some kind of entertainment. The funniest is when they say something like "€800 cash" as if it's the financing for a Learjet they have secured to pay for it.

In this downtime for some seller entertainment I'd love to stick a fictional car up and accept every single offer by text to see what the outcome is or call them back and tell them you can meet them in 20 minutes for the handover and see them crawl back under their rock.

When our service line in work rang and it was an 089 number it was nearly always a complete waste of time.
085 not so much anymore its the Eir network which I'm on myself although I have 086 number.

I’m wondering if it works some of the time tho, why else would they do it?
Sold my car just before the sh*t hit the fan, it was on DoneDeal for a week and the first person who viewed it bought it, but it was up for €3,800 and got numerous DoneDeal messages and texts offering from €1,200 to €2500.
I ignored or blocked the messages but it got me thinking about their success rate.

I like the way they offer 'CASH!'.

Like I'd take a fcuking cheque or a bag of magic beans or similar.

I had a Renault Modus in for €100 about 2 years ago, phone nearly melted. Engine was perfect, tyres about 15,000 Km on them, failed an NCT on bushings etc. €500 to repair, car had huge mileage, about 380,000 Km, so was worth no more than €400 with NCT.

People saying if I gave them €250, they'd take it off my hands, offering me money for the other car in the picture (which wasn't mine), texts looking for so much info, when I had written over 300 words in the description.

Had one guy phone me several times, said if I gave him €100, he'd take it off me, told him to get lost, eventually got €90 from takebackmycar.ie, told him that, he then offered me €50 for a car that I'd already sold for €90.

Thank fcuk I'd spent the €10 on a throw away SIM card.

I know it’s irrational and silly but when I see a 089 number call me I have visions of a certain ethnicity going into tesco and buying a sim card for the burner phone, having had trouble before with said prospective buyer I just don’t need the hassle in my life.

I felt the same way about 085 numbers about 12 years ago.

On topic, I buy and sell occasionally and agree with most, the cheaper the car the bigger muppets it will attract. You have to be ready for it and there is no cure. There are also similar muppets between sellers with the famous lines like "was perfect condition pre accident", no NCT but will fly through, and the one that has been in around in last 5 years - perfect for export!

So, a piece of sh1t which is not even good for scrapyards is somehow perfect for export?!

Lots of people get cheap sims when they are teenagers and students. When they port later in life they keep the number.

Also many are burner numbers...

Half? Not my experience. Usually it's a third, have often had to bite my lip instead of replying with the first thought in my head.

I'm 085, I've had the number definitely 15 years I'd say, I was a teenager and I got my first Meteor phone and had the number ever since. Been with Vodafone around 10 years or so now.

I don't necessarily agree with it but I think they are perceived as lower rent prefixes by a lot of people. Though I do think 089 took the stigma away from 085. Personally you do see a lot of creatures, mouth breathers and knuckle draggers with 089 numbers because all the slightly obscure MVNO's and flash in the pan networks take that prefix so there is a high percentage of tight people and people using them as disposable numbers for dodgy deals automotive and otherwise.
