    Very informative article on respirators.
Did not know they came from a bra design.

I couldn't figure out why I was having so much trouble finding details about the manufacturer of my respirator, which has the unhelpful brand name 'Hazmat'.

Turns out it is made by Armcor, the South African weapons manufacturing conglomerate, which explains a lot.

We just made home made masks . Pillow cases for the mask and cut up shoe laces for the band . A double layer of the pillow case with a dried baby wipe in between the two layers

If anyone is looking for some high quality and cheap earphones Venture Electronics is currently giving out free masks with most purchases. They sell them separately as well. Not medically graded but better than nothing.

I wouldn't call $1,298 for in-ear phones cheap and they look like a $940 mark-up on Ali-express generic earphone. The other cheaper ones look like garbage.

The masks are pretty useless too, just surgicals.

The Monk Plus and Monk Lite earbuds are audiophile approved and are just 10-20 euro.

It kinda beggars belief, mine anyway, that in world war two the British, Germans, Polish, Soviets and few others could ramp up production of gas masks* in serious numbers to protect their people, men, women and kids, even babies, hell even horses, for a potential gas attack. A device significantly more complex than a basic paper and plastic face mask and yet we can't rattle basic face masks, or other PPE up locally and have to rely on imports from the other side of the world, or people breaking out the sewing machines.

I have a 3M mask coming on Monday (I hope) but was fooling around with a sock and elastic band to cover the face tonight and didn't look too weird. Seemed to cover everything totally. Would the virus easily get around any tiny gaps in a sock?*

Felt like a right idiot going to the shop today wearing a face mask but as soon as I was in the queue, there were more people with masks on. Just hope I don't get sunburnt in the summer. Will be wearing one now going to the shops.

I haven’t gone out much in the past two weeks, but I went grocery shopping earlier and wearing a mask definitely felt more “normal” today than it did when I started 2 weeks ago. More people wearing them (particularity in the small grocery shop where social distancing is a bit challenging, but also walking down the street), and less strange looks from others.

Btw did you manage to procure your masks recently or you got them before the **** hit the fan?

I definitely see in increase in people wearing masks in my area but I though they had de come near impossible to find now - wondering if those people had the mask one or 2 weeks ago and were not using them or if they actually managed to buy them since then (which would be great if people are managing to to that but I was under the impression that it is near impossible).

I bought some 3m ones on eBay for a silly price a few days ago but they have yet to arrive...

It's a bit like comparing apples and oranges, though. Negotiating a war wherein the majority of the population are healthy and free to roam is a very different battle than dealing with a pandemic. People can't leave their house and those who can run the risk of getting sick. It is not a localized battle, either - every country on this Earth is looking for masks at the moment - non-resusuable masks not just for the front line but the billions going to the supermarkets every day etc - the pressure on the supply chain and production line is phenomenal. Those involved should be proud; they're just as susceptible as everybody else.

It took them months to start new products and production lines during WW1! And WW2
Every machine had to be hand tooled, every part hand drawn, every design piece hand made

Whereas things can be printed off a computer now

Its just the culture here, we are not used to wearing a mask.It is completely alien to us. I feel like an idiot too, because it is something so vastly new.But when you think about the seriousness of the situation, that Japan,South korea, china,Italy- they are all wearing masks. It is life or death situation, it is clearly better to wear one I think. Just common sense now. I think its foolish not to wear one .

Don't feel conscious, loads of people are wearing them now and it's a good thing!

I just wonder where people are getting the masks, I've checked with my local chemists they don't have any yet I see people in supermarkets with surgical style masks, are they robbing them from hospitals? You would think some factories would be able to produce these here? Then again as everything manufacturing wise has been outsouced to low labor cost countries like China and India we are kind of snookered.

Honestly I reckon a lot of people are continually reusing the same mask, even supposed one use disposable, with maybe a few squits of disinfectant to the outside when home

Unless you had a lot of them, not re-using them would be foolish. Detergent should be adequate or just put in an oven for 30min at 70°C.

I just checked our emails to see when we started planning. We placed mask orders on February 1st, along with hand sanitizers and gloves. We brought our chest freezer on 5th, and topped up our panadol stash over the next two weeks. I still felt stupid in mid February, thinking I was wasting money splurging on PPE and a freezer, but now I’m glad. I have mild asthma, two autoimmune conditions and am immunosuppressed. If I get it, I’ll potentially suffer badly.

Not an expert on Masks but bought some KN95 Masks on Pigsback, would these be better than Surgical Masks?
