Just thinking as I watched the daily media news update on COVD on RTE.

The numbers of new cases are two weeks old!

I'm waiting 11 days on test results

they'll be sending some of the tests to Germany to speed up processing, should be through the backlog in around 10 days

Just announced on RTE 1 news that De Taoish reckons state exams are still going to happen.

I am glad my teenager is in TY year - the current situation of all of us cooped up together for 24 hrs with two of us trying to work from home, is not a great environment to be trying to study in. Also they have missed several weeks of school teaching already and are under a kind of stress that no other exam candidates have had to endure in the history of the state.

How fair is it to put them through an exam in or around an environment of death, job loss, and home confinement? It will be even more cruel to keep the party line going that the exams are continuing only to call them off at the last minute, as I still suspect will happen.

As I said, I am glad it's not a state exam year for my family.

My son is in leaving cert and is working his butt off. I hope the exams go ahead, I really do. I can’t see what will happen with college admissions if they don’t. I don’t see why they can’t use primary schools as extra exam centres, space them out more, don’t allow congregation afterwards. I would certainly volunteer to invigilate.

Isn’t it varying related to when the outbreak started in a particular country, clusters , when lockdown is implemented etc. There will be lots of variables and we’ll only really enable to tell all when it’s all over and complete data sets are available.

But most of the counties more populous than us are not recording accurate / any figures. Either by design, or that they have no idea of them
And are we? Have you looked at the number of deaths on rip.ie the last couple of days. Well above the average amount at about 130 per day and all deaths are not put up on rip.ie.

Must have been a mistake with Florida's fatalities today. Was 209 and now 27 for the day so far.

    182 deaths in New Jersey.

Agreed , and what’s the alternative. Everyone start the year again? Lose a year? Also everyone is in the same boat, so if performance is affected points wise, it will probably be consistent across the board.

    Update of the report.

"Editors’ note, March 2020: We are aware that this story is being used as the basis for unverified theories that the novel coronavirus causing COVID-19 was engineered. There is no evidence that this is true; scientists believe that an animal is the most likely source of the coronavirus"

Well that note is not going to help. Admitting they don’t know the virus origin.

Could the Government just cancel the Junior Cert and use that extra space for social distancing of Leaving Cert students.

the median is better as it lessens the effect of outliers. for example a single death of a 10 year old would skew the average a lot. not so with the median.

The median is crap, you could have 9 10yos die 1 93yo and 9 94yos, the Median would be 93 and truly unreflective of what happened.

That just means we are doing more testing than say the African or Arabian countries with low figures.

This is where the antibody test might come into play. There may come a day soon when every person in Ireland is given the antibody test (I believe it only costs €5 or something).

On that. A specialist in infectious diseases interviewed on the radio the other day stated that the presence of antibodies does not necessarily mean that a person has developed immunity.

An antibody test will simply indicate whether the person has been infected at some point or not.

A sad milestone on the Covid-19 road, with more to come as the infection graphs are exponential in many countries.

    Coronavirus Cases: 1,000,889

of which 37,702 in severe condition

    Deaths: 51,371

    Recovered: 210,214

The coronavirus COVID-19 is affecting 204 countries and territories

    According to https://virusncov.com/

and the mean would be 54, which is much less accurate. none of the people are even close to 54.

He has to say that, even if they are not. Otherwise everyone just stops doing any study for the rest of the year.

So it's fair game to put additional mental pressure on our young people in a time of global crisis? Nothing else is certain at the moment, but we are certain that the exams will be going ahead kids. Even if they aren't...

Not a good mental health policy there.

I thought the median was that half those who died were over that age and half were under?

Is your calculation not the mean?

They are doing a good job. Think of all the failed states, tinpot dictatorships and general ****holes that constitute "other countries". Like fcuk are they reporting accurately.

It works for larger populations though and unfortunately the numbers are going to be increasing. Hence you may get that sort of distortion in daily figures but it's much less likely a problem with the cumulative totals
