And USA has different states, all treated as individual, states that are as big or much bigger than countries in Europe.

The statistics are listed by country. The US is a country. It's quite simple. Should all of Asia be reported together?

What is your criteria here because it makes no sense. There are cities in China bigger then countries in Europe.

US has second highest numbers GLOBALLY now. On CNN

Case count, they're already number 1, according to Worldometers.

    It was inevitable.

There is a strong folk memory of it. My Grandfather lost 5 siblings under the age of 10 in a week.

My father lost three siblings. An old man from my village, now long deceased, remembered seeing the three shrouded bodies lined up when he was a child, so they must have died at the same time. AFAIK, it continued to resurface right up to 1939 in different waves, but I’m open to correction on that.

USA and Europe Should be compared as a whole, not USA v Spain or Italy.
Europe is far ahead in cases and deaths than USA

Why would you do that? Did you make that argument for China when it had the most cases which was ** checks notes *** yesterday.

Well I live in Dublin and we have the highest number of infections, ICU admissions and deaths per capita thanks to selfish tossers who think they have the God-given right to go outside and infect people.

If you are damn sure that you are the only person outside for one mile, fine. But if you are living in an urban area, stay at home.

Why do you keep spouting this rubbish?

It is not what the EXPERTS have advised.

Give it a rest with your fake news.

To all the newly minted expert pandemic experts, at least Trump had the political will to impose a travel ban to limit exposure in the early days to travelers from China. This at least slowed the spread and bought some time.

    That was on January 31st.

On February 1st the Mayor of Florence declared a "Hug a Chinese" day to combat xenophobia. He'll go down in history next to the Florentine town official who complained that Michaelangelo had done David's nose wrong.

Oh they need to get out for their anxiety.

    **** off like.
And yet JJ they can go out for their anxiety or whatever, but they just have to follow the simple rule, that a child of ten would comprehend: Stay two metres or more* the fuck away from people you don't know or live with.

It's that easy to understand. Which makes me worry about too many.... That said our government has to make it simple and memorable for everyone, especially the morons. Something like "keep more than two metres away to a stranger or you'll kill your granny".

    * six feet or more for my fellow old farts.

Many worry about Artificial Intelligence. I worry far more about Organic Idiocy.

No offence but no one in the real world gives a toss about eloquent speeches.

    Trump's popularity proves this.

Anyway, America is a federal state. This has to be kept in mind when people here get excited about Trump.
I try to watch him every night for the comedy, I used to hate him now I think he's funny

It didn’t slow down anything. The only muppet who is saying that is Trump. Anybody who has been following this for months knows he’s made a raging balls of it in the US and his only strength is pointing fingers at everybody else while the country gets infected worse then it needed to be.

WHO have been taking pop shots and USA and Uk for weeks for being negligent in their response to the outbreak.

Strangely one of the biggest things Obama is most critised for in his years of President is for acting slowly on nearly everything, Not a great trait to have for this is it

...as opposed to erratically, unpredictably and inconsistently like Trump. Hardly great traits either.

I seem to recall that for a period of time during Obama's presidency the Republicans had a majority in both Congress and the Senate which might have made it hard to get some of his policies implemented.

Whilst I don't agree with lots of their policies I have no major issue with Republicans being in power - they won the election at the end of the day - but Trump is a terrible President - just because his base blindly support him, doesn't make him a 'good' president.

Can someone please explain to me why the **** are guards shopping, collecting prescriptions and making deliveries? I equate it to nurses and doctors cleaning the floors in hospitals, why are they wasting their time on meaninless activities, activities that should be done through the shops, chemists or communities. It is a waste of their manpower, when they should be strategically planning for what is to come.

I honestly couldnt believe it when i saw the picture of 2 guards in a shop, if we werent in such dire times i would have laughed.

Just don’t. It’s selfish and stupid.

There are many here who disagree with you. Going for a walk or jog every day does nobody any harm if social distancing is maintained.

A lot of comparisons are being made between this virus and the so called ‘Spanish flu’ of 1918 when it is estimated that over 50 million died worldwide.
I have to confess that I had never heard of it until recently. It is estimated that about 20,000 died in Ireland, (whole island), but there is no strong folk memory about it. I wonder is that because people back then were more used to death from all sorts of infections and diseases that there was no treatment or vaccine for. Maybe that is a reason why everyone is so scared of this outbreak - the lack of any effective treatment. We have got used to the idea that we have the means to deal with any disease.

Spanish Flu is not so-called, that was the name at the time. As for folk memory, my father told me of his memory of that time which were as a child's impressions, as being dark and fearful. Although with all the various political & military events at the time, this was part of the general chaos of the era. Irish society evolved to harden itself against the many forms death could take during that time - a lesson that might need to be re-learnt by the new Ireland.

Europe isn't a country. And as a whole, Europe has also been dealing with it a lot longer.

That it resurfaced until 1939 is a part I did not know. The fact is it is lost in the lore of history because of the concurrent war of independence.

No. Thay was just your social awkwardness at play. We Irish (incl. Myself) wouldn't be the most expressive of people and are quite cynical.

This gesture... this is a wonderful thing. Many countries are doing this and why the hell not. These people are operating at the coal face at massive risk, and working long hours. Student nurses weren't even being paid until today.

So apologies if this moral boosting exercise makes you cringe on your couch but it didn't affect you.... unless 1 day one of us has to call on their help in this crisis (i sincerely hope none of us here do).

To be fair there were some major projections announced by The ERSI today. This is an unprecedented event in all our lifetimes, the human cost is obviously tragic and deserves the majority of our attention but one day this will be over and the very future of our economic futures is at a massive crossroads. We should be allowed discuss it.

In my neighbourhood, due to the volume of people and width of the paths, maintaining social distancing is impossible.
