We only have about 200 ICU beds now.
It has been widely reported that ICU numbers have more than doubled since this started. At the CUH alone they're renovating all the old wards for beds.

I lost my grandmother at the end of last year, I'm so glad now that she went in peace when she did and didn't have to live through this. Can't imagine what it must be like for families not being able visit their sick elderly relatives. Hope anyone here in that position finds the strength to get through it.

My granny is 97 and thankfully she's not really aware of what's going on. She's been saying she's ready to go for years and I'd love if she just went peacefully too. I'd hate for her to have healthcare workers in hazmat suits treating her, it'd frighten the life out of her.

Its not the HSE responsibility to close our borders or to stop flights. They probably had a hard time trying to hammer home how serious this is to our government. Remember the weekend of the 6/7/8 of March here. There was very little action done from our government. The paddy's day parades should ha e been cancelled well before then given what was happening around Europe with the health crisises all around. Our government cared more about parades and economic activity than they did about showing some respect to our European neighbours that were suffering from this disease.

Yes I m sorry I meant the government yes they should have taken it seriously

I see the need for people to get out for a but every day.

I was also wondering why there are no disinfectants being sprayed in our cities streets, public transport and outside shops here. This is shown in most other places.

Our local park has a distinct smell of disinfectant. Our county council is doing a good job

Has it been clarified that ICU numbers are not current and are total cases there to date? I've a feeling that it is total to date, the same as the hospitalization numbers.

Wouldn't make any sense to give cumulative numbers - reporters would be asking how is there a 1000 people in ICU when only 500 beds

    That is ridiculous.

Actually it makes perfect sense to me. Would it not be desirable to have members of the travelling community staying in the locations they are currently in for the duration of this crisis rather than continually moving from one to another area and increasing number of interactions.

Number updated to match todays report

    No Change in number
    507136.PNG

    Slow Change
    507137.PNG

    Big Drop in numbers
    507135.PNG

again with all of this i'm just trying to show people the 14 day delay in an change in how we deal with this
if you wait till we are overloaded it's too late
everyone has to make up there own mind but at least look at the maths

    3 weeks no change 44K
    3 weeks slow change 29K
    3 weeks big drop 9K

    1 month no change 151K
    1 month slow change 56K
    1 month big drop 11K

you need to decide what you do today to affect 3 weeks from now

Is it? I thought it was more to do with obese people often tending to have obese related illnesses, most obviously something like diabetes than their actual weight.
You could well be right, It was something one of the experts said they were considering

If the virus may last for over two weeks on surfaces (see the study of the Diamond Princess), disinfecting is unlikely to hurt. People seem to be largely dismissing the possibility of fomite transmission, despite any supporting evidence..
Oh god yeah F surface transmission is a huge part of it, hence the wash your hands thing and sterilise objects you touch, but on road surfaces made of bitumen and the like exposed to the UV of the sun, even weak sun(UV can be quite high here even in winter)? I'd bet the farm the levels of viable virus on the streets and footpaths of Ireland are bloody low to the point of negligible.

Many worry about Artificial Intelligence. I worry far more about Organic Idiocy.

We dont have much better resources that countries in Eastern Europe(Serbia, Albania, Bosnia) in terms of ICU beds. They all had a lockdown within their first 10 cases. We were way too slow. We only have about 200 ICU beds now.

That's not fully true. There was a guy on the radio this morning reporting from Bosnia and he said they only have 40-50 ICU beds. Their population is about 3 million so we would have much higher capacity per capita. Agree that we are not well resourced though, hopefully that gets better.

I know we are being told to stay in unless absolutely necessary to fight this.

Can someone explain what the risks are, say, for just going for a quick stroll round the block and avoiding people, surely that is not 'risky'?

    No attacks please!

There is nothing wrong with going for a walk around as long as you do the
    guidelines. Its healthy
Just don’t. It’s selfish and stupid.

What is so wrong with it.

    What is he saying now?

1st few mins of his presser he was on about his video conference with G20, went on to list of most of the people who were on the call.

Presser went downhill from there, claims US has done more testing than anyone and just general Trump waffle.

Hospitalized numbers are accumulated. I just thought they'd do ICU the same.

All other country reports do the same for infections but not for hospital capacity

How can they make sure the healthcare staff working in nursing homes are negative for COVID19?

In theory yes but given our travelling friends record they will abuse this amendment

Far too much talk in the media about the economics of the whole thing. They needed to keep pressing pressing pressing the alarm button about the contagion aspect.
Far too much chat about what they were and weren’t doing in the UK too. It should have been no interest to us. RTE were mad keen to point and scoff at them. Stupid.

They have nothing else to talk/write about.Literally.
