I’ve a parent in a nursing home. It’s awful. I can understand why they can’t say locations, but it would be so reassuring to know it’s not our area.

As someone with a parent in a nursing home - you should be told if a case is reported in the home.

I got a letter recently telling me that a staff member tested positive, but to day no resident has tested positive.

As you can imagine it's a very worrying time, even more so when you read some things on here, people beginning to worry - when the majority of the nation was telling them for the last 10+ days etc... but some people just don't listen.

The number of confirmed new cases does not mean a great deal. It's from tests done a few days ago, but more importantly limited by the number of tests undertaken

It's likely that actual numbers infected are a significant multiple of the current 1,819 confirmed cases. Fortunately many of those "extras" will be showing little in the way of symptoms, but clearly can still spread the virus. Hence the incessant "social distancing" messages. It is incredibly important to slow the rise of seriously affected individuals

Which is the great value of the social distancing measures : everyone in the country keeping their distance, whether symptomatic, asymptomatic or virus free.

First time I get the sense within the department of health and HSE in this press conference of real concern this evening. Especially so is the numbers of those covid-19 patients in ICU's, 47 the latest figures. Dr Holohan is also concerned at the amount of cases in nursing homes and long stay settings.

Over half of confirmed covid-19 cases are now involving community transmission.

Scary times indeed and the facial expressions of those at the top table at tonight's presser is of some concern.

Do we know how many of the ten deceased (may they RIP) were included in last nights count of 39 ICU patients?

Irish reporter Michael Lehane says “travellers” can’t be evicted, in relation to the emergency bill. Did he mean to say renters?

No, it was a far left/PBP amendment.

8 clusters in nursing homes is unacceptable. People should have been more careful. That's the one thing you cannot let happen.

How? It just takes one asymptomatic or pre-symptoms staff member to spread it. It's really so difficult to know.

That's what I mean. Seems to be slipping. Really feels like the storm clouds are starting to gather.

10 dead is terrible and God bless them and there families
But a rise of 16 % today is a tiny bit of good news for the country
Again nothing compared to the sadness of losing 10 of our own people

Sorry can I just ask were some of those 10 deaths people in nursing homes? I have a very elderly grandparent on a nursing home( whom we can’t see since the visiting ban) and I am worried.

I personally think this is meaningless now. Ultimately this virus has spread worldwide, there are no countries unaffected. Look at the U.K. right beside us, there seems to be an awful lot of cases - diagnosed and undiagnosed. It is unprecedented, Ireland and western countries rely on air travel and ports to keep the supply chain going. They’re trying their best to slow the spread down & buy time, without society breaking down in the meantime. It’s very challenging, and I applaud the efforts of the people in charge.
I just hope they stay honest & keep the public informed.
But what in reality they can't slow it down it doesn't seem to be easing anywhere only getting worse

Yes a cluster of 7/8 as far as I remember

I thought the first nursing home cluster they announced was 14 people infected. There was a big jump in ICU patients around that time.

There have been 9 clusters so far in nursing homes!

I think we should be told the location of the clusters at least

I'don't make a particularly big deal about it but while choosing different times is one thing -announcing times and not sticking to them is another .
I mean -how hard can it be .?
Other priorities maybe; just a crazy guess tho..

255 new cases! Time for people to get the message: stay at home, buy groceries once a week.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 558 ✭✭✭pawdee

Weren't we supposed to be up to 3046 cases today according to projections? That was assuming a 30% increase per day. I'm clutching at straws here I know.

I know we are being told to stay in unless absolutely necessary to fight this.

Can someone explain what the risks are, say, for just going for a quick stroll round the block and avoiding people, surely that is not 'risky'?

    No attacks please!

I’d imagine you’d be informed of a death before they announce the numbers.

No, there is open recognition that the true toll is beyond comprehension, but the official figures exist to avoid mass panic/panic buying and the like (though there was a bit of that in late January).

If that's true and no reason to disbelieve you, then China set the rest of the world up for a fall and should be held to account when we get through this.

Just don’t. It’s selfish and stupid.

Does this means they now have the right to stay in anyone’s private property?

There is absolutely nothing wrong with this. Nobody has been told not to do this.

The message is not to avoid going outside. It's to avoid other people, crowded areas, not going shopping unless necessary etc.

17 year old died in America

    They've reversed that assessment now.

Do symptoms keep getting worse or stay the same throughout or can you feel better one day then be in reverse the next? My 70 year old mum with moderate underlying health conditions has had something since Tuesday - stomach bug and vomiting with shivering and infrequent cough with phlegm Tuesday didn't want to leave her bed, then improvement yesterday and big improvement today almost back to normal. Also given her age if it was Corona then even at the beginning her immune system wouldn't be coping that well would it?
