Who the f*ck is the idiot that thought it would be a good idea to ask people to clap outside in the street at 8pm each night in the middle of a pandemic, away from the safety and isolation of their home?!

    Seriously bad idea!

I'm all for showing support for healthcare workers and I'm sure there will be a parade for them around the globe when this is over but come now... The mere fact that they're not even sure how some healthcare workers are testing positive is enough to warrant extreme care and caution.

The ones I saw on the News and near where I live were the required distance away so no harm. O wait no everyone has to lockdown right

Trump wants churches packed for Easter Sunday. They probably will be - for funerals.

What are Germany doing that seems to be much more effective than everywhere else? even the amount critically Ill seems small relative to their case numbers

The Robert Koch daily report for Germany can be downloaded from this page:https://www.rki.de/DE/Content/InfAZ/...te/Gesamt.html

It shows that they have a low hospitalisation rate.

"Clinical information is available for 26,250 of the notified cases, of which 870 cases were reported as not having any symptoms considered significant for COVID-19.

Hospitalisation was reported in 2,664 (10%) of the 26,563 COVID-19 cases with data available."

Once people start dying in large numbers, maybe you will change your tune.

It depends on how widespread the virus is in the population.
The conventional wisdom with influenza is that its incidence decreases dramatically during the warmer months when people are less likely to to cooped up together for long periods and infecting each other. The longer you are in close proximity to an infected person the more like you are to become infected.
If this virus is widespread already the present ‘lockdown’ will not be effective and may make matters worse.
In most households there will be someone going out to work or to buy groceries etc. They will come into contact with other people and with surfaces and bring the infection home with them. If the lockdown isn’t total, and virtually everyone ‘cocooned’, it is completely useless.

The US is 66 times bigger than Ireland.

    13,000/66 = 197 cases

Which is roughly what Ireland is getting.

Anyone else getting a bit desensitized by the whole thing, its here now, people are going die. All we can do is slow it down.

    From the Irish Times today:

German virologists have so far identified two reasons for the relatively low death rate. The first is luck: to date many German infections have been in younger, healthier people. The second is organisation and resources: Germany began testing people in January and, with a population of 82 million, is currently processing about half a million tests a week.

We have been doing the clapping here in Vancouver for the past few nights. Pots and pans out and cheering.

It lifts the spirits a bit.

That said, roughly half those cases are entirely in New York State.

Not desensitised to the mass destruction of a civil society and functioning economy by forced lockdowns, no.

    How would they know that?

When it's over they will be able to calculate how many extra people in each category died than would have been expected to die based on previous years figures.

Sounds awful when it's put that way, but obviously for every 100 85 year olds with certain conditions they have the stats to show roughly how many would be expected to die in a certain year.

    Looking at the statistics :-
    https://www.worldometers.info/coronavirus/#countries

The China statistics still puzzle me, why are they so low, given spread in other countries, and how did they more or less contain it with Wuhan/Hubai region ?

I understand Wuhan went into complete lockdown late January , but the virus had 2 months to spread throughout China, whilst they were unaware of virus /and the cover up early January -
Surley the number of cases should be much higher in China and it should have spread throughout rest of China (given what happened elsewhere) ?

Not really to be honest. Still worried about my parents and my grandad who's in a care home.

I'm more talking about the amount of deaths. 700 dead in Italy and it seemed normal.

It’s also due to how deaths are being recorded. In Germany where there is a significant underlying pre-existing co-morbidity it is being put down as the cause of death whereas in Italy they are putting down Coronavirus. So apples aren’t being compared with apples throughout. This of course is true of so many of the stats in this pandemic. For instance, broader testing = more cases = lower death rate per 1,000 cases but not lower amount of people dying.

When all this blows over we need to applaud our state. Our people. Our government. All the institutions and machines of the state...

Yes, applaud the very people whose work and efforts and indefatigable constitutions allow us all to be who we are...

Maybe this crisis will make people stop and think before shouting the odds at politicians for this that and the other....the “they and them” no, they and them are us, and we...people...

Our politicians deserve all of our applause...

But at the same time we are not seeing footage of Army trucks picking up bodies or temporary morgues in Germany as we are for Spain and Italy

The US will applaud Trump by re-electing him in that case.

Take their dole and social house off them and make an example these people once and for all.
