UK figures not moving as fast as Italy's.

It's still bad and will get much worse, but they aren't following the same curve as Italy in terms of deaths.

Wait another week to 10 days and see what the situation is then particularly in the London area.

No. There’s space for some humour amidst the incessant gloom

Can’t beat a bit of quality gallows humour!

It's not appropriate for a politician to make statements like that when the data is so inconclusive. Medics are entitled to make a call, he is not.

I wasn't disagreeing with you. I'm just pointing out that you can't rush data to prove that something works and DT trumpeting it is not going to make it FDA/EMA/HPRA/MHRA approved before we have all the relevant data.

The evidence for hydroxychloroquine isn't even that strong. It's just based off case reports and expert opinion at the moment.

Big jump for Uk today Christ doesn’t Augur well

I think today's UK figures are part of a change in reporting time. Hence yesterday's figures were a lot lower, today's may account for some deaths that should have been announced yesterday.

However as you suggest it will get worse, but it will get worse for everyone.

Why don't the HSE just have their press briefing at 20:45 every day? Or am I stating the bleeding obvious?

Because the press briefing is the least most important thing they have to do at the minute.
It falls in around the important stuff.

I had an idea, the whole PPE issue and purchasing it.

What if the likes of me wanted to donate towards purchasing ir to the cost of purchasing. In a way of giving.

Would people pay into a National GoFindMe where its used to purchase PPE

Remember Beasty used to do one at Xmas for kids hospitals etc

Would people here do similar....might be better than a round of applause

510,000 cases globally as of now, just passed the 500k mark with the last update.

I fear for New York, the UK and the US going down Italy/Spain route

    God love them

New York is absolutely being hammered. But the one good thing IMV of course is that Andrew Cuomo is playing a blinder here. I know he could be accused of milking a crisis, but he is on brief and says it as it is.

Pity he wasn't the Dem Candidate for Prez. But stranger things have happened.

Because if they didn’t they’d have people whinging and whining at them, and the conspiracy theorists would be out in full force.

Do you think medical staff are just holding it back for the craic like?

I'm sure they've been working as hard as they can on bringing it mainstream since long before that clown opened his big mouth.

    Maybe... maybe not.

They'll be working a little bit faster, now the big "clown" has lit a fire under them! And everyone will be watching and waiting! ;)

Leaders need to be aggressive sometimes. I like that in a leader. (sometimes)

The death toll in Italy has been revised upwards from 662 to 712 for today according to Worldometers
6203 new cases and 712 new deaths in Italy. Worldometer has contacted Piedmont officials directly and received confirmation that the number of deaths in the region is 499, 50 more than reported in the Protezione Civile's bulletin today, We have checked the totals by region and can confirm that the total number of deaths in Italy as of today is 8,215 rather than 8,165 incorrectly reported by Protezione Civile. Accordingly, the total number of cases changes from 80,539 to 80,589. [source]

Approximately 2,000 people have died so far today in Western Europe

You think they all go home after the press briefing.
I'd say there are more meetings/discussions after the press briefing.
I doubt many of these people involved have seen too much of their beds or their families.

We really don't know that. The signs are good, but it's early days.

So far, our deaths have doubled approx every 4 days. in Italy is was very close to every 2 days. That is an ENORMOUS difference in growth speed.

It may well explode yet but we are doing VERY well.

Looking at deaths per 1M population, we are at 2.

    The US is at 3.
    The UK is at 6.
    Italy is at 136
    Spain is at 89.

A colleague was not given an option to do a test, coughs badly for few days but he's below 39 Celsius so was just told to stay home. Wonder how many ill are there who are being told the same and will never make statistics.

The issue isn't actually funding it's a supply chain one. The money is absolutely there to purchase it.

You've every hospital system in the world all trying to purchase from a supply chain that's ramping up, but isn't able to keep up.
You're looking at a situation where there's an unprecedented demand for this stuff and it's all happening at once. At most in the past one region might need it, but right now it's everyone.

Anyone who has stockpiles of PPE should however donate it ASAP.

The appeals by medical staff were for anyone in the food, pharma or any sector who happened to have a stock of PPE sitting on site that they could donate. There are quite a few areas of business would potentially have this.

We also need to convert manufacturing to produce PPE and this and is happening e.g. O'Neills Sports.

I never said he was re-inventing the wheel...

He's being aggressive, to try to bring a drug mainstream that could potentially help a lot of people. I like his aggressive approach.

    Hopefully it's successful. :)

And you think that other leaders around the world are not trying to push for a vaccine/ treatment? I am sure they do - although behind the scenes and not as part of an election campaign!

Yes it is supply and demand, so you’ve O Neills stitching ppe for the NHS. Zara are stitching for Spain’s health service, and here we’re literally on a wing and a prayer to secure PPE from the very country that brought us coronavirus.

A clothes factory in Moville in Donegal has started making scrubs for doctors and nurses

You can donate towards the cost of a pair of scrubs

There are a few textile companies left in Ireland, but not many and what is left tends to be quite high end and not into bulk production. That's the same across most developed countries as the 'rag trade' went to low cost production economies in Asia, and not mostly China btw.
