And South Italy has been in lockdown for 2+ weeks now, I don't know how the spread is getting worse there ...

The virus has been spreading throughout Italy for much longer than 2 weeks!

I'm baffled at the number of Americans on Twitter saying that it's going to be ok because they have more cases than Italy but far fewer deaths.

I don't think they understand how this virus works...I genuinely fear that in two weeks time the US is going to be a world of trouble with Covid 19.

Yep, they could easily exceed Italy's peak death rate by the first week of April. I don't know if anyone's modeled it.

OK - 6 p.m. today before anyone asks!
Moved back to 8.45. Expect another 20 requests for the time.

Joking aside, where is the start time listed/announced on a daily basis?

But at least it will be over by Easter, according to f**kw*t Trump.

Don't underestimate how good their hospitals are over there... if they can get everyone into them for treatment, that is!

I'm not convinced that their death toll will be as high as people think.

Again its all relative to their population.

Even if the US matches it, adding 700+ a day, they're still doing better than Italy.

The US has 5-6 times the population of Italy, so for them to do worse they would have to have 5-6 times the number of deaths, and a daily rate of that would be around 3,500 deaths per day if Italy continues to be at 650.

By the way guys, just a question - as members of the EU what have they done for Ireland to help in this emergency?

They have created a €37B investment initiative, the ECB has agreed to spend an extra €750 billion in the secondary markets to ensure borrowing costs for stricken countries do not soar, and they have triggered for the first time ever the fiscal "general escape clause" which basically ends EU oversight of budgetary spending.

Realistically there is little they can do however due the the various competence clauses in the EU treaties.

I am surprised that there is no official DoH announcement on times yet, always have to rely on Fergal.

Just a perfectly innocent question with no underlying agenda.

The EU have allocated a €37 billion fund which can be used to support any member states and the're building a pan-European stockpile of medical devices and PPE, so that they can shift resources to countries that need them most urgently. I'm sure there's more, but that's just what I've heard on the same news you've doubtlessly been listening to.

Ireland is doing pretty well by comparison to most, so I would really not expect we would need them to step in here. Hopefully that will stay the case.

Currently the USA has 1,100 deaths out of a 327,000,000 population.

That's 11 deaths per 3,270,000. Not too dissimilar to us and a lot less than Wales at 28 deaths for a similar population.

My point being in very large population countries, the likes of a Trump isn't going to be overally worried at such relatively small numbers.

I'm sure he's saying to himself these deaths are nothing to shut down our economy for, around 3 deaths per million of population.

By the way I don't concur with that viewpoint. But that man probably won't be convinced till the figure per million climbs very high.

Reporters were asked one day - replied that timings depend on daily workloads of HSE:

Fergal Bowers is usually a good source on Twitter. My time came from RTE feed, but that has now been updated.

    That's scary.

Really seems like this should be better advertised, if only to make people more aware, a byproduct of which would maybe improve compliance.

    Italy deaths:

    March 20 - 627
    March 21 - 793
    March 22 - 651
    March 23 - 601
    March 24 - 743
    March 25 - 683
    March 26 - 662

There undoubtedly has been a levelling off. Their lockdown is working, if they keep it up they should experience a decline sometime in April.

Oh I know... but they have quantity too. And the resources to create more when they will inevitably require it.

I just don't see their death toll going as high as many are predicting.
