    More deaths on the road this month than at the hands of Covid 19.

    We're grand so.

    How can some people be fine with this and show no symptoms or mild symptoms and others are serious/critical and young 20 year olds dying?

    It’s baffling. Maybe there is some makeup in people that makes them more immune or more likely to be asymptotic? I mean if it’s so infectious and spreads so fast, surely there can’t be a single supermarket worker in Lombardy that doesn’t have it at this stage

    Dr Ciara Kelly had some symptoms, is asthmatic, but got on relatively ok, whereas you’ve people in the “have you been tested” thread discussing pretty heavy symptoms.

    Relatively speaking for their population the USA have done well so far. If they had the same rate as Italy they would be on 41,000 deaths by now.

    Italy are a few weeks ahead of them sadly :(

    Well good news if that's your primary concern, we're likely to see a dramatic fall in the number of road deaths in the coming weeks and months

    Deaths per 1 million people:
    Italy - 124
    Spain - 74
    Iran - 25
    Holland -21
    France - 20
    Switerland - 81
    Belgium - 15
    UK - 6
    USA - 3
    Ireland - 2
    Canada - 0.8

    Relatively speaking for their population the USA have done well so far. If they had the same rate as Italy they would be on 41,000 deaths by now.

    The risk is New York is the 'pathfinder', and other heavily populated regions will be following in their wake. Hopefully not inevitable if those regions have taken the right steps by this stage, and Trump doesn't undo all the good work...

    I'd say there'll be more deaths here on the horizon.

    You are going to look very silly in a month...but then again you are probably used to it by now.

    It could possibly be that asymptomatic people are healthy and have very strong immune systems.

    Perhaps the younger people that died had underlying problems or weaknesses in their immune system that they weren't even aware of themselves.

    Maybe thought it's just like life - people die at all ages - why do some people get cancer so young, why do some survive others don't...

    Not really. Not many places in the US are as densely populated as New York. Several states I believe have implemented school shut downs and stay at home orders etc in time to prevent a massive outbreak in those areas. I think, for the most part, the US will be ok. Economically, I dont know.

    Ditto. I think we are going the right way, but must continue as is for the immediate future to truly push it down.

    It depends on how the immune system reacts to the invader. Sometimes, (fortunately rarely), it massively overreacts even in otherwise young and healthy individuals. This can be dangerous and sometimes fatal.

    Plus italy made moves to slow it weeks ago now america on the other hand hasnt done much.

    America is the new epicentre now

    America has done plenty, half the country, namely in the most affected areas, are in lockdown.

    New York and California were in lockdown quicker than the UK was.

    Russians are doing what their fellow Europeans didn't and won't be forgotten easily. Confiscating medical equipment sent from China, stopping medical equipment bring exported to Italy so they could look after themselves. It's another opportunity for the Russians to drive a wedge.

    Todays rate of 1.177 is down again on yesterday which is great to see.

    Graph updated for todays numbers.

    Blue = Continue at the same rate
    Green = Rate of 1.1
    Yellow = Rate of 1.2
    Red = Rate of 1.3

    The last few days make it look like a corner has been turned and things are stabilising. Based on the increased controls enacted earlier, we should hopefully see a drop towards 1.1 as the weekend approaches. The gains from the additional measures announced yesterday won't be seen until towards the middle/end of next week when, all things going to plan, we should be closing in on a rate of 1.

    Was going to say same too early to tell, some countries on list haven’t peaked yet( I greatly dislike the term but that’s what they call it) We are still early on here as well.

    Turkey rocketing up the leader board of disease with +516 cases today and 15 deaths.

    Feels like only a week a go Erdogan was adamant to the world that they never heard of coronavirus and no such thing would ever happen in the country.

    Oh wait, it was a week a go.

    The next Iran.

    Those figures for New York State are crazily high when compared to other regions in the USA. I assume the majority are in NYC with its dense population.

    But he also said that Italy won’t forget how other states behaved during the crisis. Foreign Minister Di Maio himself has said Italy will remember who helped it through the virus emergency, with China among the most generous with doctors and medical equipment.

    Russia has pledged to send eight brigades of virus specialists -- about 100 people in total -- and disinfection trucks, as well as medical equipment, according to Russia’s Defense Ministry. Many on the team had experience in past Russian aid missions to Africa for the Ebola virus and other epidemic relief. The Kremlin said the request for help came from the Italian side.

    Yes, NY is the easy way in. It follows human traffic. We need firewalls.

    The week before JFK was shot, hardly any presidents were shot.
