I'm mightily impressed by the governor of New York, Andrew Cuomo. The US could do with a guy like him at the top table.

Feck off. I'm breathless and tight chest etc but never had a temperature. You haven't a clue what you are talking about.

Lots of people with it don't have a temperature.

sounds like you are suffering from anxiety.

Definitely people's going for testing that shouldn't be be.

    94% tests are returning negative!

Make them more strict, which they have done, and get through the backlog. Test test test and we'll get right on top of it.

This is what confused me but I understand that if you have any of symptoms associated with CV you should self-isolate until you receive additional instruction from your GP.

Answer is YES. Only 7% of those who get referred for tests prove positive.

The are looking for a set of criteria that lets them catch a higher percentage and reduce the waste of time in testing negative cases. I'm sure there are characters out there who feel fine ringing their doctors and saying they have a cough and a fever just because they want a test.

I've seen that, 3 I think 2 used for Malaria and Cuba has its Alpha 2 so much so that the government here had a meeting about buying in large amounts

I mean not a cure but if the drugs stopped a nice amount needing hospitalisation or ICU it would be a game changer

They have begun clinical trials in Europe based on the most promising drugs already approved for human use.
    www.euronews.com/amp/2020/03/23/clinical-trials-starting-in-europe-as-new-drug-offers-hope-of-potential-coronavirus-treatm
I believe the WHO are also overseeing a world wide trial also

What we`re experiencing now will be the new normal for a long time to come.

Possibly for a year or so but the hope would be that a global vaccine would be able to beat the virus down.

The idea of humans never being able to congregate again in a group setting would be beyond unthinkable.

Don't know about anyone else, but I'm struggling mentally being stuck inside so much. Waiting to be tested, and haven't left the house in 11 days. I'm ready to crack.

Just wondering is it the density in cities themselves or is it public transport in particular causing the main issues?

Wuhan shut down public transport, it's an easy bake over for disease to transmit to others.

GP’s probably then guided by Ireland following the 2 symptoms advice from the WHO.

What societal changes do people think will happen when this is all over? Cannot imagine everyone suddenly starts wearing face masks like some Asian countries.
Or do we go back to the same old thing?
It's shown lots of people, for example, can easily work from home - is there any need for 10s of thousands of people commuting to work every day
Will hospitals build in to their infrastructure more safeguards against future pandemics (we still don't know if this thing is going to continue to circulate like the flu or mutate)

Any other thoughts? Normally normalcy prevails in this thread at this time of night...

No they are right to refer even the mildest of cases. We need to identify as many cases as possible. Maybe that person with a mild dose might pass it to someone who could become more seriously I'll.

Longer term it would be great to have the capacity to find every case.

Testing every one of the 3,300 people in the locked-down Italian town where the first person died found a good number with no symptoms, and putting them in quarantine was what stopped the outbreak in the town.

Right now I can see a good case for trying to use info gained from the testing to date to target people more likely to be positive so they can be notified more quickly, and their contacts traced.

If not it seems like an unnecessary risk.

I do stock count in dunnes and merchandising. Most other calls just order

Humans are social creatures- social distancing won’t last a year

You are allowed leave the house even if you are in self isolation. You can go for a walk(s) on your own and you are not breaching your isolation (I was reading this yesterday in an explanation of what to 'self isolate' means). Quarantine is a different thing and is for people who have been confirmed to be sick.

Sat tight for 10 days working from home and generally keeping a social distance having tracked the spread since January. Left the apartment Friday to go meet best friend for dinner in a quiet spot.

Person has been sent for testing showing all the symptoms.

Feel like facepalming myself as I had some reservations in the first place as the same person annoyed me with their it's only a flu attitude.

Ffs stupid. Won't be leaving here for 2 weeks at the minimum regardless. I'm living alone so no problem there.

The company probably won't want any hassle with Dunnes so you might have to keep going there.

The other order calls are most likely not needed. Shoppers seem to be focussed and going for specific items rather that browsing.

A ridiculous unproven statement... It's spreading from both !

You're completely wrong there unfortunately. Check the HSE website. You are not supposed to go for walks alone if you are self isolating.

We'll work around it. Humans are also very innovative. We can socialise while distancing. A simple example is how I go meet my sister's family up the road - I stay well outside the gate while they stay inside. Sure there's no hugs with my little nieces but we can still have a chat.

We've all made mistakes. Don't be too hard on yourself. You're isolating for 2 weeks, all you can do.

It's not really. Your statement is untrue. See below.
Of those for whom transmission status is known: community transmission accounts for 47%, close contact accounts for 23%, travel abroad accounts for 31%.
    Official Numbers reported today

So how do you explain that. Travel abroad means Irish people who went abroad and came home and we can't stop that.

I doubt that there's many foreigners coming in.

Business meetings are cancelled, hotels are empty, tourist attractions shut down, Patrick's Day was cancelled.

No reason for people to come here.
Also they're staying at home too.

The claims about foreigners and shutting down airports is just xenophobia.

Really? That directly contradicts what I read in one of the Irish papers - 'self isolation' and 'quarantine' are meant to be two different things

Edit : you're quite correct on what the HSE are saying, full quarantine even if you 'think' you might have the virus

I was in Japan for work a few years ago and asked why some people wear masks on the street. The answer I was given at the time was that it was mainly people with allergies who did so, and it was very few people who wear them as far as I seen.
